Photoinduced electron transfer and geminate recombination in the group head region of micelles

Tuning of electron transfer reactions in pluronic-surfactant supramolecular assemblies

Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reaction between an anionic acceptor, coumarin-343 (C343), and a neutral donor, N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAN), has been investigated in composite supramolecular assemblies (mixed micelles) comprised of a pluronic copolymer (P123: EO20-PO70-EO20 or F88: EO103-PO39-EO103 where EO: ethylene oxide and PO: propylene oxide) and a cationic surfactant (CTAC: cetyltrimethylammonium chloride), following fluorescence quenching studies. Systematic increase in the quenching rates for the studied donor-acceptor system with the increasing CTAC to pluronic molar ratio in the mixed micelles demonstrates a large modulation in the ET rates. The mixed micellar systems in the present cases are formed through the incorporation of the hydrocarbon chains of CTAC into the poly-PO core of the pluronic micelles whereby the cationic head groups of CTAC are placed at the periphery of the micellar core, protruded into the hydrated poly-EO corona region, leading to the formation of a positively charged layer deep inside these mixed micelles. Thus, the anionic C343 dye, initially dissolved at the micelle-water interface, experiences a gradually increasing electrostatic attraction and is therefore systematically dragged deeper inside the micellar corona, as the CTAC composition is increased in the mixed micellar systems. Consequently, the ET rate of the C343-DMAN pair undergoes a large enhancement in the studied mixed micellar systems with the increasing CTAC to pluronic molar ratio. The present strategy of modulating ET reactions using such composite supramolecular assemblies can find applications in areas where bimolecular ET is an integral reaction step.

Photoinduced electron transfer in naphthalimide-pyridine systems: effect of proton transfer on charge recombination efficiencies

We studied the effect of proton-coupled electron transfer on lifetimes of the charge-separated radicals produced upon light irradiation of the thiomethyl-naphthalimide donor SMe-NI-H in the presence of nitro-cyano-pyridine acceptor (NO(2)-CN-PYR). The dynamics of electron and proton transfer were studied using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy in the UV/vis range. We find that the photoinduced electron transfer between excited SMe-NI-H and NO(2)-CN-PYR occurs with a rate of 1.1 × 10(9) s(-1) to produce radical ions SMe-NI-H(•+) and NO(2)-CN-PYR(•-). These initially produced radical ions in a solvent cage do not undergo a proton transfer, possibly due to unfavorable geometry between N-H proton of the naphthalimide and aromatic N-atom of the pyridine. Some of the radical ions in the solvent cage recombine with a rate of 2.3 × 10(10) s(-1), while some escape the solvent cage and recombine at a lower rate (k = 4.27 × 10(8) s(-1)). The radical ions that escape the solvent cage undergo proton transfer to produce neutral radicals SMe-NI(•) and NO(2)-CN-PYR-H(•). Because neutral radicals are not attracted to each other by electrostatic interactions, their recombination is slower that the recombination of the radical ions formed in model compounds that can undergo only electron transfer (SMe-NI-Me and NO(2)-CN-PYR, k = 1.2 × 10(9) s(-1)). The results of our study demonstrate that proton-coupled electron transfer can be used as an efficient method to achieve long-lived charge separation in light-driven processes.

Ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from dimethylaniline to coumarin dyes in sodium dodecyl sulfate and triton X-100 micelles

The primary steps of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) to five coumarin dyes are studied in an anionic micelle [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)] and a neutral micelle [triton X-100 (TX-100)] using femtosecond upconversion. The rate of PET in micelle is found to be highly nonexponential. In both the micelles, PET displays components much faster (approximately 10 ps) than the slow components (180-2900 ps) of solvation dynamics. The ultrafast components of electron transfer exhibit a bell-shaped dependence on the free energy change. This is similar to Marcus inversion. The rates of PET in TX-100 and SDS micelle are, in general, faster than those in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelle. In the SDS and TX-100 micelle, the Marcus inversion occurs at -DeltaG0 approximately 0.7 eV which is lower than that (approximately 1.2 eV) in CTAB micelle. Possible causes of variation of PET in different micelles are discussed.
