The correction vector method for three-photon absorption: the effects of pi conjugation in extended rylenebis(dicarboximide)s

Theoretical characterization of two-photon fluorescent probes for nitric oxide detection: sensing mechanism, photophysical properties and protonation effects

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signal molecule in biological systems and is correlated with many physiological processes and pathological diseases. To date, numerous fluorescent probes based on o-diamino aromatics have been designed and synthesized for NO detection utilizing the principle of photoinduced electron transfer (PET). However, the underlying PET mechanism has rarely been validated, and a systematic computational study on the photophysical properties is urgently desired. In this study, we used a theoretical protocol to comparatively investigate the sensing mechanism, photophysical properties and protonation effects of two emblematic probes NINO and PYSNO in aqueous solution, which combines a polarizable continuum model (PCM), time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and thermal vibration correlation function formalism (TVCF). Our findings reveal that the weak emission of NINO is due to activated PET with negative driving energy and blocked fluorescence with significant charge separation. In contrast, the poor luminescence of PYSNO is caused by the facilitated non-radiative dissipation, even though the fluorescence emission remains unobstructed. Although NINO has been successfully used in two-photon microscopy for detecting NO, we suggest that PYSNO possesses a superior two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section in the near-infrared region. The protonation effects suggest that both probes can function effectively in practical acidic lysosomal environments. Our study opens a new avenue for understanding the mechanism and predicting the properties of two-photon fluorescent probes for NO detection, thus aiding the rational design of efficient fluorescent sensors.

Enhanced three-photon activity triggered by the AIE behaviour of a novel terpyridine-based Zn(ii) complex bearing a thiophene bridge

Multiphoton bioimaging benefits from good penetration of tissue, low phototoxicity and high resolution. Hence, development of efficient multiphoton imaging agents is highly desirable but remains challenging. Herein, a novel terpyridine-based Zn(ii) complex bearing a thiophene bridge was designed rationally and fabricated. Thanks to its aggregation-induced emission (AIE), DZ1 emitted bright yellow-green fluorescence (λ em = 575 nm) under physiological conditions. The three-photon spectral changes of DZ1 when binding with RNA unambiguously reflected its RNA-specific targeting behaviour, resulting in twofold enhancement in three-photon action cross-sections located at the second near-infrared window (1700 nm).

Three-photon-absorption-induced optical stabilization effects in a bifluorenylidene derivative

A bifluorenylidene derivative with extended π-conjugated system has been designed and successfully synthesized. The compound displays strong three-photon absorption effect. The obtained three-photon absorption cross section is as high as 81.3 × 10(-76) cm(6)s(2). Distinguished 3PA-induced optical limiting and optical stabilization performances have been achieved. The on-axis transmitted intensity approached a constant even though the incident laser pulse fluctuation was 300%.

Theoretical predictions of red and near-infrared strongly emitting X-annulated rylenes

The optical properties of rylenes are extremely interesting because their emission colors can be tuned from blue to near-infrared by simply elongating the chain length. However, for conjugated chains, the dipole-allowed odd-parity 1B(u) excited state often lies above the dipole-forbidden even-parity 2A(g) state as the chain length increases, thus preventing any significant luminescence according to Kasha's rule. We systemically investigated the 1B(u)∕2A(g) crossover behaviors with respect to the elongating rylene chain length with various quantum chemistry approaches, such as time-depended density functional theory (TDDFT), complete active space self-consistent field theory (CASSCF∕CASPT2), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI)∕Zerner's intermediate neglect of diatomic overlap (ZINDO), and MRCI∕modified neglect of differential overlap. The calculated results by CASSCF∕CASPT2 and MRCI∕ZINDO are completely coherent: the optical active 1B(u) state lies below the dark B(3g) or 2A(g) state for perylene and terrylene, which results in strong fluorescence; while a crossover to S(1) = 2A(g) occurs and leads to much weaker fluorescence for quaterrylene. Then we put forward a molecular design rule on how to recover fluorescence for the longer rylenes by introducing heteroatom bridges. Several heteroatom-annulated rylenes are designed theoretically, which are predicted to be strongly emissive in the red and near-infrared ranges. These are further confirmed by theoretical emission spectra as well as radiative and nonradiative decay rate calculations by using the vibration correlation function formalisms we developed earlier coupled with TDDFT.

Structure to property relationships for multiphoton absorption in covalently linked porphyrin dimers: a correction vector INDO/MRDCI study

The correction vector method has been used to investigate structure to property relationships for multiphoton absorption properties in covalently linked porphyrin dimers. The electronic structure of the system is described within the multireference single and double configuration interaction (MRDCI) method coupled with the intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) Hamiltonian. We find a strong increase in the two-photon absorption (2PA) and three-photon absorption (3PA) cross sections when going from an isolated porphyrin to the dimers. The nature of the 2PA and 3PA active states as well as the cross sections show a strong but not straightforward dependence on the length of the bridge between the two porphyrins. Our theoretical results are in very good agreement with experimental data for 2PA. The resulting structure to property relationships are analyzed on the basis of essential-state models, where it turns out that a three-state model considering only the Q(x) intermediate state proposed in literature does not provide a full description of the actual situation.

Effects of Donor/Acceptor Strengths on the Multiphoton Absorption: An EOM-CCSD Correction Vector Study

We have developed a correction method (CV) to calculate the single- and multiphoton absorption (MPA) spectra of organic pi-conjugated systems within the equation of motion coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD). The effects of donor/acceptor strengths on the multiphoton absorption in a series of symmetrically substituted stilbene derivatives have been reinvestigated at both the ab initio and the semiempirical intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) Hamiltonian levels. Both ab initio and INDO calculations show that the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents lead to enhancements of two- and three-photon absorption cross sections, more pronounced for two-photon absorption than for three-photon absorption. The ab initio calculations usually produce larger excitation energies than the semiempirical, which lead to lower MPA cross sections.
