Phase behavior of a symmetrical binary fluid mixture

Suppression of coarsening and emergence of oscillatory behavior in a Cahn-Hilliard model with nonvariational coupling

We investigate a generic two-field Cahn-Hilliard model with variational and nonvariational coupling. It describes, for instance, passive and active ternary mixtures, respectively. Already a linear stability analysis of the homogeneous mixed state shows that activity not only allows for the usual large-scale stationary (Cahn-Hilliard) instability of the well-known passive case but also for small-scale stationary (Turing) and large-scale oscillatory (Hopf) instabilities. In consequence of the Turing instability, activity may completely suppress the usual coarsening dynamics. In a fully nonlinear analysis, we first briefly discuss the passive case before focusing on the active case. Bifurcation diagrams and selected direct time simulations are presented that allow us to establish that nonvariational coupling (i) can partially or completely suppress coarsening and (ii) may lead to the emergence of drifting and oscillatory states. Throughout, we emphasize the relevance of conservation laws and related symmetries for the encountered intricate bifurcation behavior.

Liquid-Liquid Phase Transitions in Tetrahedrally Coordinated Fluids via Wertheim Theory

Network interpenetration has been proposed as a mechanism for generating liquid-liquid phase transitions in one component systems. We introduce a model of four coordinated particles, which explicitly treats the system as a mixture of two interacting interpenetrating networks that can freely exchange particles. This model can be solved within Wertheim's theory for associating fluids and shows liquid-liquid phase separations (in addition to the gas-liquid) for a wide range of model parameters. We find that originating a liquid-liquid transition requires a small degree of interpenetrability and a preference for intranetwork bonding. Physically, these requirements can be seen as controlling the softness of the particle-particle interaction and the bond flexibility, in full agreement with recent findings [Smallenburg, F.; Filion, L.; Sciortino, F. Nat. Phys. 2014, 10, 653].

Fluids in porous media: the case of neutral walls

The bulk phase behavior of a fluid is typically altered when the fluid is brought into confinement by the walls of a random porous medium. Inside the porous medium, phase-transition points are shifted, or may disappear altogether. A crucial determinant is how the walls interact with the fluid particles. In this work, we consider the situation whereby the walls are neutral with respect to the liquid and vapor phases. In order to realize the condition of strict neutrality, we use a symmetric binary mixture inside a porous medium that interacts identically with mixture species. Monte Carlo simulations are then used to obtain the phase behavior. Our main finding is that, in the presence of the porous medium, a liquid-vapor critical point still exists. At the critical point, the distribution of the order parameter remains scale invariant, but self-averaging is violated. These findings provide further evidence that random confinement by neutral walls induces critical behavior of the random Ising model (i.e., Ising models with dilution type disorder, where the disorder couples to the energy).

Reentrant miscibility in two-dimensional symmetrical mixtures

The Monte Carlo simulation method in the grand canonical ensemble is used to study the phase behavior of two-dimensional symmetrical binary mixtures of Lennard-Jones particles with negative nonadditivity and the weaker interaction between the pairs of unlike than between the pairs of like particles. We have determined the evolution of the phase diagram topology when the parameters describing the interaction between unlike particles vary. It has been found that such systems may exhibit reentrant miscibility in the liquid and the solid phases.

The phase behavior of two-dimensional symmetrical mixtures

Using Monte Carlo simulation methods in the grand canonical and semigrand canonical ensembles, we study the phase behavior of two-dimensional symmetrical binary mixtures of Lennard-Jones particles. We discuss the interplay between the demixing transition in a liquid and the freezing in detail. Phase diagrams for several systems characterized by different parameters describing interactions in the system are presented. It is explicitly demonstrated that different scenarios involving demixing and freezing transitions, described in our earlier paper [A. Patrykiejew and S. Sokołowski, Phys. Rev. E, 81, 012501 (2010)], are possible. In one class of systems, the λ-line representing a continuous demixing transition in a liquid phase starts at the liquid side of either the vapor-liquid or liquid-solid coexistence. The second class involves the systems in which the λ-line begins at the liquid side of the vapor-liquid coexistence, in the lower critical end point, and then terminates at the liquid side of the liquid-solid coexistence, in the upper critical end point. It is also shown that in such systems the solid phase may undergo a demixing transition at the temperature above the upper critical end point.

Binary mixture adsorbed in a slit pore: Field-induced population inversion near the bulk instability

The recently proposed method for modulating through an external field the composition of a binary fluid mixture adsorbed in a slit pore is discussed. The population inversion near the bulk (demixing) instability is first analyzed in the case of a symmetric mixture of nonadditive hard spheres, without field. It is next investigated for a mixture comprising dipolar particles subject to an external field. The influence of several factors on the adsorption curves including bulk composition, pore width, field direction, polarizability versus permanent dipoles, and temperature on this field induced population inversion is shown by Monte Carlo simulation.

Phase behaviour of the symmetric binary mixture from thermodynamic perturbation theory

We study the phase behaviour of symmetric binary mixtures of hard core Yukawa (HCY) particles via thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT). We show that all the topologies of phase diagram reported for the symmetric binary mixtures are correctly reproduced within the TPT approach. In a second step we use the capability of TPT to be straightforwardly extended to mixtures that are nonsymmetric in size. Starting from mixtures that belong to the different topologies of symmetric binary mixtures we investigate the effect on the phase behaviour when an asymmetry in the diameters of the two components is introduced. Interestingly, when the energy of interaction between unlike particles is weaker than the interaction between like particles, the propensity for the solution to demix is found to increase strongly with size asymmetry.

Interplay between demixing and freezing in two-dimensional symmetrical mixtures

The interplay between demixing and freezing in two-dimensional symmetrical binary mixtures of Lennard-Jones particles is studied using Monte Carlo simulation. It is demonstrated that different scenarios are possible. For example, the line of continuous liquid demixing transition can start at the liquid side of the vapor-liquid coexistence at the lower critical end point and then it can terminate at the liquid side of the liquid-demixed solid coexistence at the upper critical end point. Other situations are also possible. We distinguish four different scenarios depending on the interactions between unlike particles.

Nonadditivity in the effective interactions of binary charged colloidal suspensions

Based on primitive model computer simulations with explicit microions, we calculate the effective interactions in a binary mixture of charged colloids with species A and B for different size and charge ratios. An optimal pairwise interaction is obtained by fitting the many-body effective forces. This interaction is close to a Yukawa (or Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO)) pair potential but the AB cross-interaction is different from the geometric mean of the two direct AA and BB interactions. As a function of charge asymmetry, the corresponding nonadditivity parameter is first positive, then significantly negative and is then positive again. We finally show that an inclusion of nonadditivity within an optimal effective Yukawa model gives better predictions for the fluid pair structure than DLVO theory.
