Wetting-layer formation mechanisms of surface-directed phase separation under different quench depths with off-critical compositions in polymer binary mixture

Wetting Effect Induced Depletion and Adsorption Layers: Diffuse Interface Perspective

When a multi-component fluid contacts arigid solid substrate, the van der Waals interaction between fluids and substrate induces a depletion/adsorption layer depending on the intrinsic wettability of the system. In this study, we investigate the depletion/adsorption behaviors of A-B fluid system. We derive analytical expressions for the equilibrium layer thickness and the equilibrium composition distribution near the solid wall, based on the theories of de Gennes and Cahn. Our derivation is verified through phase-field simulations, wherein the substrate wettability, A-B interfacial tension, and temperature are systematically varied. Our findings underscore two pivotal mechanisms governing the equilibrium layer thickness. With an increase in the wall free energy, the substrate wettability dominates the layer formation, aligning with de Gennes' theory. When the interfacial tension increases, or temperature rises, the layer formation is determined by the A-B interactions, obeying Cahn's theory. Additionally, we extend our study to non-equilibrium systems where the initial composition deviates from the binodal line. Notably, macroscopic depletion/adsorption layers form on the substrate, which are significantly thicker than the equilibrium microscopic layers. This macroscopic layer formation is attributed to the interplay of phase separation and Ostwald ripening. We anticipate that the present finding could deepen our knowledge on the depletion/adsorption behaviors of immiscible fluids.

Efficient removal of Cd2+ ion from water by calcium alginate hydrogel filtration membrane

Calcium alginate (CaAlg) hydrogel filtration membrane was prepared using urea as pore-forming agent. The effects of preparation and operating conditions on the removal rate of Cd²⁺ were researched. The removal mechanism of Cd²⁺ and the anti-fouling property of CaAlg membrane were investigated. The removal rate of the CaAlg filtration membrane reached over 99.5% within 120 min when 20 mg/L Cd²⁺ was used, and the flux was 15.5 L/m²h at 0.1 MPa when the thickness of the membrane was 0.28 ± 0.08 mm. However, the removal rate of Cd²⁺ was below 10.0% when the same concentration Cd²⁺ solution was adsorbed by CaAlg membrane with the same size. Energy dispersive spectroscope analysis demonstrated that the removal of Cd²⁺ depended on the adsorption and ion exchange of Ca²⁺ by Cd²⁺. CaAlg membrane exhibited a higher removal rate for Cd²⁺ (almost 100%). It was the filtration process that promoted the adsorption and ion exchange of Cd²⁺ in CaAlg hydrogel.

Optimal Reactivity and Improved Self-Healing Capability of Structurally Dynamic Polymers Grafted on Janus Nanoparticles Governed by Chain Stiffness and Spatial Organization

Structurally dynamic polymers are recognized as a key potential to revolutionize technologies ranging from design of self-healing materials to numerous biomedical applications. Despite intense research in this area, optimizing reactivity and thereby improving self-healing ability at the most fundamental level pose urgent issue for wider applications of such emerging materials. Here, the authors report the first mechanistic investigation of the fundamental principle for the dependence of reactivity and self-healing capabilities on the properties inherent to dynamic polymers by combining large-scale computer simulation, theoretical analysis, and experimental discussion. The results allow to reveal how chain stiffness and spatial organization regulate reactivity of dynamic polymers grafted on Janus nanoparticles and mechanically mediated reaction in their reverse chemistry, and, particularly, identify that semiflexible dynamic polymers possess the optimal reactivity and self-healing ability. The authors also develop an analytical model of blob theory of polymer chains to complement the simulation results and reveal essential scaling laws for optimal reactivity. The findings offer new insights into the physical mechanism in various systems involving reverse/dynamic chemistry. These studies highlight molecular engineering of polymer architecture and intrinsic property as a versatile strategy in control over the structural responses and functionalities of emerging materials with optimized self-healing capabilities.

Diffusion and Directionality of Charged Nanoparticles on Lipid Bilayer Membrane

Diffusion dynamics of charged nanoparticles on the lipid membrane is of essential importance to cellular functioning. Yet a fundamental insight into electrostatics-mediated diffusion dynamics of charged nanoparticles on the membrane is lacking and remains to be an urgent issue. Here we present the computational investigation to uncover the pivotal role of electrostatics in the diffusion dynamics of charged nanoparticles on the lipid membrane. Our results demonstrate diffusive behaviors and directional transport of a charged nanoparticle, significantly depending on the sign and spatial distribution of charges on its surface. In contrast to the Fickian diffusion of neutral nanoparticles, randomly charged nanoparticles undergo superdiffusive transport with directionality. However, the dynamics of uniformly charged nanoparticles favors Fickian diffusion that is significantly enhanced. Such observations can be explained in term of electrostatics-induced surface reconstruction and fluctuation of lipid membrane. We finally present an analytical model connecting surface reconstruction and local deformation of the membrane. Our findings bear wide implications for the understanding and control of the transport of charged nanoparticles on the cell membrane.

Shearing Janus Nanoparticles Confined in Two-Dimensional Space: Reshaped Cluster Configurations and Defined Assembling Kinetics

The self-assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles (ANPs) possesses a wide array of potential applications in various fields, ranging from nanotechnology to material science. Despite intense research of the thermodynamic self-assembly of ANPs, elucidating their nonequilibrium behaviors under confinement still remains an urgent issue. Here, by performing simulation and theoretical justification, we present for the first time a study of the shear-induced behaviors of Janus spheres (the most elementary ANPs) confined in two-dimensional space. Our results demonstrate that the collective effects of shear and bonding structures can give rise to reshaped cluster configurations, featured by the chiral transition of clusters. Scaling analysis and numerical modeling are performed to quantitatively capture the assembling kinetics of dispersed Janus spheres, thereby suggesting an exotic way to bridge the gap between anisotropic and isotropic particles. The findings highlight confinement and shearing engineering as a versatile strategy to tailor the superstructures formed by ANPs toward unique properties.

Influence of substrate interaction and confinement on electric-field-induced transition in symmetric block-copolymer thin films

In the present work, we study morphologies arising due to competing substrate interaction, electric field, and confinement effects on a symmetric diblock copolymer. We employ a coarse-grained nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard phenomenological model taking into account the appropriate contributions of substrate interaction and electrostatic field. The proposed model couples the Ohta-Kawasaki functional with Maxwell equation of electrostatics, thus alleviating the need for any approximate solution used in previous studies. We calculate the phase diagram in electric-field-substrate strength space for different film thicknesses. In addition to identifying the presence of parallel, perpendicular, and mixed lamellae phases similar to analytical calculations, we also find a region in the phase diagram where hybrid morphologies (combination of two phases) coexist. These hybrid morphologies arise either solely due to substrate affinity and confinement or are induced due to the applied electric field. The dependence of the critical fields for transition between the various phases on substrate strength, film thickness, and dielectric contrast is discussed. Some preliminary 3D results are also presented to corroborate the presence of hybrid morphologies.

Fluid-fluid demixing of off-critical colloid-polymer systems confined between parallel plates

We investigate the off-critical demixing of colloid-polymer systems confined between two parallel plates, where the surface potential is short ranged. We study the case where the minority phase completely wets the surfaces. We find that initially the sample separates as in bulk, until the size of the domains becomes sufficiently large such that further growth is restricted by the plate spacing. The behaviour of the droplets is then determined by the wettability of the walls. We furthermore explore a sample where the loss of wetting phase material to the surfaces causes a shift from a morphology associated with an unstable sample, showing spinodal decomposition, to that associated with a metastable sample. This underlines the importance of the rich interplay between the viscosity contrast and the local volume fraction on the observed morphologies.

Phase separation of thin-film polymer mixtures under in-plane electric fields

Phase-separation dynamics of polymer thin-film mixtures of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are observed while an in-plane electric field is applied, instead of the out-of-plane fields usually employed previously. The phase separation is accompanied by the formation of PS dewetting holes at zero or weak fields. The dewetting velocity at 0.25 μm/min is a few times slower than that seen in regular bilayer dewetting. With the increasing of the field strength, we observe the formation of PS droplets in PMMA matrix, a reversal from zero- or low-field conditions. The PS dewetting holes are also suppressed. At further increased fields, PS droplets quickly penetrate up to the top of the PMMA matrix, leading to smaller and more irregular final PS droplets. This is manifested in the dramatic decrease in the growth exponent of the droplet size L from L∼t1.5 to L∼t0.1. These morphology changes are explained by the electrostatic energy resulted from the PS and PMMA dielectric contrast.
