Abstract
The identification and quantification of caffeine is a common need in the food and pharmaceutical industries and lately also in the field of environmental science. For that purpose, Raman spectroscopy has been used as an analytical technique, but the interpretation of the spectra requires reliable and accurate computational protocols, especially as regards the Resonance Raman (RR) variant. Herein, caffeine solutions are sampled using Molecular Dynamics simulations. Upon quantification of the strength of the non-covalent intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding between caffeine and water, UV-Vis, Raman, and RR spectra are computed. The results provide general insights into the hydrogen bonding role in mediating the Raman spectral signals of caffeine in aqueous solution. Also, by analyzing the dependence of RR enhancement on the absorption spectrum of caffeine, it is proposed that the sensitivity of the RR technique could be exploited at excitation wavelengths moderately far from 266 nm, yet achieving very low detection limits in the quantification caffeine content.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was applied to gain insights into the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of an important electron transport mediator, methyl viologen (MV2+ ). An organic dication, MV2+ has numerous applications in electrochemistry that include energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and chemical sensing and electrosynthesis. MV2+ is easily reduced by a single electron transfer to form a radical cation species (MV•+ ), which has an intense UV-visible absorption near 600 nm. The redox properties of the MV2+ /MV•+ couple and light-sensitivity of MV•+ have made the system appealing for photo-electrochemical energy conversion (e.g., solar hydrogen generation from water) and the study of photo-induced charge transfer processes through electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopic measurements. The reported work applies leading TDDFT approaches to investigate the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of MV2+ and MV•+ . Using a conventional hybrid exchange functional (B3-LYP) and a long-range corrected hybrid exchange functional (ωB97X-D3), including with a conductor-like polarizable continuum model to account for solvation, the electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectra predicted are in good agreement with experiment. Also analyzed are the charge transfer character and natural transition orbitals derived from the TDDFT vertical excitations calculated. The findings and models developed further the understanding of the electronic properties of viologens and related organic redox mediators important in renewable energy applications and serve as a reference for guiding the interpretation of electronic absorption and Raman spectra of the ions.

Abstract
![]()
Raman scattering is a very powerful tool employed to
characterize
molecular systems. Here we propose a novel theoretical strategy to
calculate the Raman cross-section in time domain, by computing the
cumulative Raman signal emitted during the molecular evolution in
time. Our model is based on a numerical propagation of the vibronic
wave function under the effect of a light pulse of arbitrary shape.
This approach can therefore tackle a variety of experimental setups.
Both resonance and nonresonance Raman scattering can be retrieved,
and also the time-dependent fluorescence emission is computed. The
model has been applied to porphyrin considering both resonance and
nonresonance conditions and varying the incident field duration. Moreover
the effect of the vibrational relaxation, which should be taken into
account when its time scale is similar to that of the Raman emission,
has been included through the stochastic Schroedinger equation approach.

Abstract
The off-resonance and resonant Raman spectra have been simulated for models of fluorescent protein chromophores, those of the green fluorescent protein (GFP, called FP1) and of DsRed (called FP2), which presents a longer π-conjugated path, with the aim of providing a systematic investigation of structural but also computational aspects. These were performed at the (time-dependent) density functional theory [(TD)DFT] level. The off-resonance intensities have been calculated from the derivatives of the frequency-dependent polarizability with respect to the normal coordinates while the resonant ones have been evaluated using Huang-Rhys factors determined from the gradients of the excitation energies with respect to the normal coordinates. When applied with the M05 meta-GGA exchange-correlation functional, this simple computational scheme can reproduce most of the experimental Raman signatures of FP1 in its protonated and deprotonated forms, the differences of vibrational signatures of the cis (Z) and trans (E) isomers, as well as their changes as a function of the excitation wavelength. On the other hand, testing the predictions made for FP2 would require new experimental work. It was also observed that simulations with methods that inadequately predict the resonant Raman spectra could nevertheless produce a UV-vis absorption spectrum that is quite similar to the one obtained with better methods, once realistic peak broadening has been applied.

Abstract
Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-[2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolizin-9-yl)vinyl]-4H-pyran (LD688) in DMSO solution was investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) with 403 nm excitation. The molecular structure of LD688 is similar to that of a well-known push-pull chromophore, 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), except that the internal rotation of the electron-donating dimethylamino group is restricted with the introduction of the julolidine moiety. Upon photo-excitation, LD688 shows an ultrafast (1.0 ps) ICT followed by the vibrational relaxation (3-8 ps) in the charge-transfer (CT) state. Two distinct Raman spectra of LD688 in the locally excited (LE) and CT state of the S1 state were retrieved from FSRS measurements. Based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations, a "twisted" julolidine geometry of LD688 was proposed for the ICT state, which was further confirmed in comparison to the spectral changes of several push-pull chromophores with the π-conjugated backbone of stilbene, biphenyl, styrylpyran, styrylpyridinium, and styrene in terms of the skeletal vibrational modes of ν19b,py, νCC,ph, and νCN.

Abstract
We unravel the potentialities of resonance Raman spectroscopy to detect ibuprofen in diluted aqueous solutions. In particular, we exploit a fully polarizable quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methodology based on fluctuating charges coupled to molecular dynamics (MD) in order to take into account the dynamical aspects of the solvation phenomenon. Our findings, which are discussed in light of a natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, reveal that a selective enhancement of the Raman signal due to the normal mode associated with the C-C stretching in the ring, νC=C, can be achieved by properly tuning the incident wavelength, thus facilitating the recognition of ibuprofen in water samples.

Abstract
The sum-over-state expressions are derived to calculate the second-order Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects in absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies. These effects depend on the second derivatives of the transition dipole moment with respect to the vibrational coordinates. The method is applied to the molecule of 1,3-butadiene using density functional theory calculations. It is found that the second-order HT effects are significant for both absorption and resonance Raman intensities, and that the calculated spectra are in good agreement with the experimental data. The second-order HT effects originate from diagonal elements of the second derivatives matrix, whereas non-diagonal elements have a negligible impact on the intensities of 1,3-butadiene.

Abstract
A new method is proposed to analyze Doubly Resonant infrared-visible Sum-Frequency Generation (DR-SFG) spectra. Based on the transform technique, this approach is free from assumptions about vibronic modes, energies, or line widths and accurately captures through the overlap spectral function all required aspects of the vibronic structure from simple experimental linear absorption spectra. Details and implementation of the method are provided along with three examples treating rhodamine thin films about one monolayer thick. The technique leads to a perfect agreement between experiment and simulations of the visible DR-SFG line shapes, even in the case of complex intermolecular interactions resulting from J-aggregated chromophores in heterogeneous films. For films with mixed H- and J-aggregates, separation of their responses shows that the J-aggregate DR-SFG response is dominant. Our analysis also accounts for the unexplained results published in the early times of DR-SFG experiments.

Abstract
Lately, experimental evidence of unexpectedly extremely high spatial resolution of tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) has been demonstrated. Theoretically, two different contributions are discussed: an electromagnetic effect, leading to a spatially confined near field due to plasmonic excitations; and the so-called chemical effect originating from the locally modified electronic structure of the molecule due to the close proximity of the plasmonic system. Most of the theoretical efforts have concentrated on the electromagnetic contribution or the chemical effect in case of non-resonant excitation. In this work, we present a fully quantum mechanical description including non-resonant and resonant chemical contributions as well as charge-transfer phenomena of these molecular-plasmonic hybrid systems at the density functional and the time-dependent density functional level of theory. We consider a surface-immobilized tin(ii) phthalocyanine molecule as the molecular system, which is minutely scanned by a plasmonic tip, modeled by a single silver atom. These different relative positions of the Ag atom to the molecule lead to pronounced alterations of the Raman spectra. These Raman spectra vary substantially, both in peak positions and several orders of magnitude in the intensity patterns under non-resonant and resonant conditions, and also, depending on, which electronic states are addressed. Our computational approach reveals that unique - non-resonant and resonant - chemical interactions among the tip and the molecule significantly alter the TERS spectra and are mainly responsible for the high, possibly sub-Angstrom spatial resolution.

Abstract
Extremely solvent-enhanced absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole were investigated by performing a generalized multi-set damped Franck-Condon spectral simulation. Experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole in the gas phase were first well reproduced by performing an un-damped Franck-Condon simulation, but a one-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation severely underestimated the intensities of the peaks of experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole in n-hexane. Then, a multi-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation was proposed and carried out for simulating the extremely solvent-enhanced absorbance and fluorescence, and here, the simulated spectra agreed well with the experimental ones. Five (four) representative solvent-enhanced normal modes corresponding to the combination of ring stretching and ring breathing vibrational motions were determined to be responsible for enhanced absorbance (fluorescence) in n-hexane solution. Furthermore, different scalings were applied to the ground and first-excited states, resulting in different enhancement of absorbance and fluorescence, and this analysis revealed atoms in the carbazole interacting with n-hexane solvent molecules and, hence, leading to different normal-mode vibrational vector patterns in the ground and first-excited states, respectively. Basically, the same conclusion was drawn from a simulation with HF-CIS and the three functionals (TD)B3LYP, (TD)B3LYP-35, and (TD)BHandHLYP. The present multi-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation scheme was demonstrated to successfully interpret extremely solvent-enhanced absorbance and fluorescence of carbazole in n-hexane-solvent.

Abstract
In short-time dynamics approximation, relative resonance Raman (RR) intensity of a vibrational mode primarily depends on the magnitude of square of the excited-state gradient along the corresponding normal coordinate, ground-state normal mode eigenvector, and harmonic vibrational wavenumbers. In this study, through simulation of RR spectra of guanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) in two ππ* singlet excited states, we analyze how the explicitly hydrogen-bonded local solvation structure of the chromophore dictates intensities of the RR active modes in an unprecedented manner. We show that the accuracy of the structural model of solvated chromophore plays a decisive role in determining an optimal theoretical method for prediction of the Franck-Condon region of the ππ* excited states. 9-Methylguanine (9-meG) in complex with six water molecules (9-meG·6H2O) is found out to be the most accurate one for describing GMP in two different bright electronic states. We find that explicit hydrogen-bonded water molecules strongly influence computed RR intensities of GMP by modulating both the ground-state normal mode vectors and the excited-state energy gradients. We find that simultaneous inclusion of six explicit waters to describe the solute-solvent interaction near all hydration sites is essential for reliable prediction of the features of RR spectra in Lb and Bb electronic states of GMP.

The relative magnitude of the Franck-Condon (FC) contribution and of the Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects is evaluated for both the absorption and RR intensities. The accuracy of the calculated spectra is assessed by employing different theoretical approximations and by comparing with experimental data. The obtained results show that Duschinsky effects lead to noticeable modifications in the absorption intensities but are nearly negligible in the RR spectrum. By contrast, the HT effects are stronger for the RR intensities compared to the absorption intensities, and these effects significantly improve the agreement with the experimental RR spectrum. Moreover, the HT effects produce different values of the RR depolarization ratios, which can be used to quantify the relative importance of the FC and HT contributions. Generally, it is found that the HT effects have a significant role on the RR spectrum of trans-porphycene and that their inclusion in the computational scheme is mandatory to accurately predict the RR intensities.

Abstract
The ground state geometries and vibrational frequencies as well as the excitation energies and excited state gradients of the S1(nπ*) and S2(ππ*) states of trans- and cis-azobenzene are investigated by several DFT methods, namely B3LYP, PBE, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97X. Excited state properties and in particular gradients are also assessed using the wave function based methods EOM-CCSD and RASPT2/RASSCF. Comparison with experimental data shows that the B3LYP functional gives the most accurate results for the ground state geometry and vibrational frequencies. The analysis of the vertical excitation energies reveals that the RASPT2 approach provides the most accurate excitation energies with deviations of the order of 0.1 eV. Among the TDDFT methods, the CAM-B3LYP functional shows the best performance on the excitation energies. By assessing the excited state gradients with respect to the reference RASPT2 data, the most accurate gradients are obtained with B3LYP, whereas other functionals as well as the EOM-CCSD and RASSCF calculations give less consistent results. Overall, despite the tendency of B3LYP to underestimate the excitation energies, this functional provides the most balanced description of both ground and excited state properties for both isomers of azobenzene in the Franck-Condon region.

Abstract
We analyze resonance Raman spectra of the nucleobase uracil in the short‐time approximation calculated with multiconfigurational methods. We discuss the importance of static electron correlation by means of density‐matrix renormalization group self‐consistent field (DMRG‐SCF) calculations. Our DMRG‐SCF results reveal that a minimal active orbital space that leads to a qualitatively correct description of the resonance Raman spectrum of uracil should encompass parts of the σ/σ* bonding/anti‐bonding orbitals of the pyrimidine ring. We trace these findings back to the considerable entanglement between the σ/σ* bonding/anti‐bonding as well as valence π/π* orbitals in the excited‐state electronic structure of uracil, which indicates non‐negligible non‐dynamical correlation effects that are less pronounced in the electronic ground state.

Abstract
The photophysics of a series of Ru(II) dyads based on the 2-(1-pyrenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]-phenanthroline ligand was investigated. The ability of these metal complexes to intercalate DNA and induce cell death upon photoactivation makes them attractive photosensitizers for a range of photobiological applications, including photodynamic therapy. In the present study, time-resolved transient absorption and emission spectroscopy were used to interrogate the photoinduced processes that follow metal-to-ligand charge transfer excitation of the complexes in solution. It was found that energy transfer to pyrene-localized intraligand triplet states, facilitated by torsional motion of the pyrene moiety relative to the imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline ligand, was an important relaxation pathway governing the photophysical dynamics in this class of compounds. Biphasic decay kinetics were assigned to spontaneous (pre-equilibrium) and delayed emission, arising from an equilibrium established between (3)MLCT and (3)IL states. TDDFT calculations supported these interpretations.

Abstract
Both the normal Raman spectra (NRS) and resonance Raman spectra (RRS) can be used to figure out the isomers and their interfacial structures. Furthermore, the differences in RRS between the locally excited state and the charge transfer state of C343–TiO2are helpful to understand and control the electron transfer at the interface.

Abstract
A typical quinacridone pigment, PV19, has been used to analyze the impact of several computational parameters on the UV/vis absorption band shape in solution, simulated using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory levels of approximation. These encompass, (i) the choice of exchange-correlation functional, (ii) the basis set, (iii) the method for non-equilibrium optimization of the excited state geometry, (iv) the approach for evaluating the vibronic band structure, (v) the peak broadening, and (vi) the scaling of the harmonic vibrational frequencies. Among these, the choice of exchange-correlation functional is certainly of the most importance because it can drastically modify the spectral shape. In the case of PV19, the M05-2X and to a lesser extent CAM-B3LYP XC functionals are the most efficient to reproduce the vibronic structure, confirming the important role of exact Hartree-Fock exchange. Still, these functionals are not the most reliable to predict the excitation energies and oscillator strengths, for which M05, a functional with less HF exchange, performs better. For evaluating the vibronic structure, the simple gradient method, where only one step of geometry optimization of the excited state is carried out and the gradients are used to evaluate the Huang-Rhys factors as well as to determine the excited state geometries produces a spectrum that is very similar to the ones obtained with the more involved Duschinsky and geometry methods, opening the way to a fast simulation of the UV/vis absorption spectra of pigments and dyes. Then, the effect of scaling the calculated vibrational frequencies to account for anharmonicity effects as well as for limitation of the method also impacts the shape of the vibronic spectrum and this effect depends on the method used to determine the Huang-Rhys factors. Indeed, scaling the vibrational frequencies by a factor which is typically smaller than 1.0 results in a relative decrease of the 0-1 peak intensity with respect to the 0-0 band when optimizing the geometry of the excited state whereas the effect is opposite and magnified if using the gradient method.

Abstract
We present an effective time-independent implementation to model vibrational resonance Raman (RR) spectra of medium-large molecular systems with the inclusion of Franck-Condon (FC) and Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects and a full account of the possible differences between the harmonic potential energy surfaces of the ground and resonant electronic states. Thanks to a number of algorithmic improvements and very effective parallelization, the full computations of fundamentals, overtones, and combination bands can be routinely performed for large systems possibly involving more than two electronic states. In order to improve the accuracy of the results, an effective inclusion of the leading anharmonic effects is also possible, together with environmental contributions under different solvation regimes. Reduced-dimensionality approaches can further enlarge the range of applications of this new tool. Applications to imidazole, pyrene, and chlorophyll a1 in solution are reported, as well as comparisons with available experimental data.

Abstract
The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods were performed to investigate the electronic excited-state hydrogen bonding dynamics of the hydrogenbonded complex formed by BHC-nicotinamide (BHCN) and methanol (MeOH). The ground-state geometry optimizations, electronic transition energies, corresponding oscillation strengths of the low-lying electronically excited states, and the optimized S1 excited-state geometry for the isolated BHCN and MeOH monomers, the hydrogen-bonded BHCN–MeOH dimers, and BHCN–2MeOH trimer complexes have been calculated by using the DFT and TDDFT methods, respectively. We have demonstrated that the intermolecular hydrogen bond C10=O14···H40−O39−Me is weaker than C16=O17···H46−O45−Me in the hydrogen-bonded dimers and trimer no matter whether in the ground state or the excited state. In addition, our results are consistent with the relationship between the electronic spectral shifts and excited-state hydrogen bonding dynamics: hydrogen bond strengthening can induce the relative electronic spectra redshift, whereas a blueshift will be induced. In addition, we focused our attention on the frontier molecular orbital and the results could reasonably explain the hydrogen bond strengthening or weakening mechanism.

Abstract
The hydrogen-bonding dynamics in both singlet and triplet excited states of the trans-acetanilide ( AA ) in methanol ( MeOH ) solvent was investigated using the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method. Geometric optimizations of the hydrogen-bonded AA–MeOH complexes considered here as well as the isolated AA and MeOH molecules were performed using density functional theory (DFT) method. At the same time, the TDDFT method was performed to calculate the electronic transition energies and corresponding oscillation strengths of all the compounds in the low-lying electronically excited states. In this study, only the intermolecular hydrogen bonds C=O⋯H–O and N–H⋯O–H can be formed. A theoretical forecast that changes of hydrogen bonds in the low-lying electronic excited states was proposed. We discussed not only ground-state geometric structures and electronic excitation energies but also frontier molecular orbitals and electron density transition. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds between AA and MeOH molecules play an important role in the geometric structures and electronic excitation energies. Zhao et al. have put forward the relationship between the electronic spectra and hydrogen bonding dynamics for the first time. According to Zhao's rule, a redshift of the relevant electronic spectra will appear if hydrogen bond is strengthened, while the hydrogen bond weakening can make an electronic spectra shift to blue.

Abstract
In this work, we investigate the adsorption process of two carboxylic acids (stearic and undecylenic) on a H-Si(111) surface via the calculation of structural and energy changes as well as the simulation of their IR and Raman spectra. The two molecules adsorb differently at the surface since the stearic acid simply physisorbs while the undecylenic acid undergoes a chemical reaction with the hydrogen atoms of the surface. This difference is observed in the change of geometry during the adsorption. Indeed, the chemisorption of the undecylenic acid has a bigger impact on the structure than the physisorption of the stearic acid. Consistently, the former is also characterized by a larger value of adsorption energy and a smaller value of the tilting angle with respect to the normal plane. For both the IR and Raman signatures, the spectra of both molecules adsorbed at the surface are in a first approximation the superposition of the spectra of the Si cluster and of the carboxylic acid considered individually. The main deviation from this simple observation is the peak of the stretching Si-H (ν(Si-H)) mode, which is split into two peaks upon adsorption. As expected, the splitting is bigger for the chemisorption than the physisorption. The modes corresponding to atomic displacements close to the adsorption site display a frequency upshift by a dozen wavenumbers. One can also see the disappearance of the peaks associated with the C=C double bond when the undecylenic acid chemisorbs at the surface. The Raman and IR spectra are complementary and one can observe here that the most active Raman modes are generally IR inactive. Two exceptions to this are the two ν(Si-H) modes which are active in both spectroscopies. Finally, we compare our simulated spectra with some experimental measurements and we find an overall good agreement.
