Electronic properties of liquid ammonia: A sequential molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics approach

Hydrogen Bonding in Liquid Ammonia

The nature of hydrogen bonding in condensed ammonia phases, liquid and crystalline ammonia has been a topic of much investigation. Here, we use quantum molecular dynamics simulations to investigate hydrogen bond structure and lifetimes in two ammonia phases: liquid ammonia and crystalline ammonia-I. Unlike liquid water, which has two covalently bonded hydrogen and two hydrogen bonds per oxygen atom, each nitrogen atom in liquid ammonia is found to have only one hydrogen bond at 2.24 Å. The computed lifetime of the hydrogen bond is t ≅ 0.1 ps. In contrast to crystalline water-ice, we find that hydrogen bonding is practically nonexistent in crystalline ammonia-I.

Identification of an Emitting Metastable State of p-Fluorophenol-Ammonia 1:2 Complex by Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy

We have demonstrated here, for the first time to our knowledge, the formation of an emitting metastable species upon lowest electronic excitation (S₁) of a hydrogen-bonded 1:2 complex of para-fluorophenol (pFP) with ammonia (NH₃), which is known to be one of the smallest reactive complexes to undergo excited state H-atom transfer (HAT) reaction to produce ^•NH₄(NH₃) radical fragment. The emission spectrum of the species is characterized to be red-shifted, broad, and structureless. From the viewpoint of energy balance, an excited state proton transfer (ESPT) is unfavorable, but according to predicted electronic structure parameters, the metastable state species could be stabilized by charge transfer (CT) interaction at the hydrogen-bonded geometry of the complex. We propose that this species could act as an intermediate to the HAT process in the excited state. The observation of such a state could be valuable to understand the complex dynamics of similar events in biologically relevant systems.

Probing the band gap of liquid ammonia with femtosecond multiphoton ionization spectroscopy

The solvated electron primary yield is used in a multiphoton-ionization action-spectroscopic experiment to explore the band gap of liquid ammonia.

Electrospun Nanofibers from a Tricyanofuran-Based Molecular Switch for Colorimetric Recognition of Ammonia Gas

A chromophore based on tricyanofuran (TCF) with a hydrazone (H) recognition moiety was developed. Its molecular-switching performance is reversible and has differential sensitivity towards aqueous ammonia at comparable concentrations. Nanofibers were fabricated from the TCF-H chromophore by electrospinning. The film fabricated from these nanofibers functions as a solid-state optical chemosensor for probing ammonia vapor. Recognition of ammonia vapor occurs by proton transfer from the hydrazone fragment of the chromophore to the ammonia nitrogen atom and is facilitated by the strongly electron withdrawing TCF fragment. The TCF-H chromophore was added to a solution of poly(acrylic acid), which was electrospun to obtain a nanofibrous sensor device. The morphology of the nanofibrous sensor was determined by SEM, which showed that nanofibers with a diameter range of 200-450 nm formed a nonwoven mat. The resultant nanofibrous sensor showed very good sensitivity in ammonia-vapor detection. Furthermore, very good reversibility and short response time were also observed.

Ultrafast dynamics of electrons in ammonia

Solvated electrons were first discovered in solutions of metals in liquid ammonia. The physical and chemical properties of these species have been studied extensively for many decades using an arsenal of electrochemical, spectroscopic, and theoretical techniques. Yet, in contrast to their hydrated counterpart, the ultrafast dynamics of ammoniated electrons remained completely unexplored until quite recently. Femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy on metal-ammonia solutions and femtosecond multiphoton ionization spectroscopy on the neat ammonia solvent have provided new insights into the optical properties and the reactivities of this fascinating species. This article reviews the nature of the optical transition, which gives the metal-ammonia solutions their characteristic blue appearance, in terms of ultrafast relaxation processes involving bound and continuum excited states. The recombination processes following the injection of an electron via photoionization of the solvent are discussed in the context of the electronic structure of the liquid and the anionic defect associated with the solvated electron.

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions with graphene electrodes

Polarization-driven resistive switching in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs)--structures composed of two electrodes separated by an ultrathin ferroelectric barrier--offers new physics and materials functionalities, as well as exciting opportunities for the next generation of non-volatile memories and logic devices. Performance of FTJs is highly sensitive to the electrical boundary conditions, which can be controlled by electrode material and/or interface engineering. Here, we demonstrate the use of graphene as electrodes in FTJs that allows control of interface properties for significant enhancement of device performance. Ferroelectric polarization stability and resistive switching are strongly affected by a molecular layer at the graphene/BaTiO3 interface. For the FTJ with the interfacial ammonia layer we find an enhanced tunnelling electroresistance (TER) effect of 6 × 10(5)%. The obtained results demonstrate a new approach based on using graphene electrodes for interface-facilitated polarization stability and enhancement of the TER effect, which can be exploited in the FTJ-based devices.
