Lamellar morphology induced by two-step surface-directed spinodal decomposition in binary polymer mixture films

Phase separation of mixtures after a second quench: composition heterogeneities

We investigate binary mixtures undergoing phase separation after a second (deeper) temperature quench into two- and three-phase coexistence regions. The analysis is based on a lattice theory previously developed for gas-liquid separation in generic mixtures. Our previous results, which considered an arbitrary number of species and a single quench, showed that, due to slow changes in composition, dense colloidal mixtures can phase-separate in two stages. Moreover, the denser phase contains long-lived composition heterogeneities that originate as the interfaces of shrunk domains. Here we predict several new effects that arise after a second quench, mostly associated with the extent to which crowding can slow down 'fractionation', i.e. equilibration of compositions. They include long-lived regular arrangements of secondary domains; wetting of fractionated interfaces by oppositely fractionated layers; 'surface'-directed spinodal 'waves' propagating from primary interfaces; a 'dead zone' where no phase separation occurs; and, in the case of three-phase coexistence, filamentous morphologies arising out of secondary domains.

Self-organization and nanostructural control in thin film heterojunctions

In spite of more than two-decades of studies of molecular self-assembly, the achievement of low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-parameter bottom-up approaches to address the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems is still missing. In the particular case of molecular thin films, the 3D nanoscale morphology and function are crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Here we show how it is possible to tune the 3D film structure (domain size, branching, etc.) of thin film heterojunctions with nanoscale accuracy together with the modulation of their optoelectronic properties by employing an easy two-step approach. At first we prepared multi-planar heterojunctions with a programmed sequence of nanoscopic layers. In a second step, thermal stimuli have been employed to induce the formation of bulk heterojunctions with bicontinuous and interdigitated phases having a size below the exciton diffusion length. Importantly, the study of luminescence quenching of these systems can be considered as a useful means for the accurate estimation of the exciton diffusion length of semiconductors in nanoscale blends. Finally, nearly a thousand times lower material consumption than spin coating allows a drastic reduction of material wasting and a low-cost implementation, besides the considerable possibility of preparing thin film blends also by employing materials soluble in different solvents.

Phase separation in antisymmetric films: a molecular dynamics study

We have used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study phase-separation kinetics in a binary fluid mixture (AB) confined in an antisymmetric thin film. One surface of the film (located at z = 0) attracts the A-atoms, and the other surface (located at z = D) attracts the B-atoms. We study the kinetic processes which lead to the formation of equilibrium morphologies subsequent to a deep quench below the miscibility gap. In the initial stages, one observes the formation of a layered structure, consisting of an A-rich layer followed by a B-rich layer at z = 0; and an analogous structure at z = D. This multi-layered morphology is time-dependent and propagates into the bulk, though it may break up into a laterally inhomogeneous structure at a later stage. We characterize the evolution morphologies via laterally averaged order parameter profiles; the growth laws for wetting-layer kinetics and layer-wise length scales; and the scaling properties of layer-wise correlation functions.

Surface-directed spinodal decomposition: a molecular dynamics study

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study surface-directed spinodal decomposition in unstable binary AB fluid mixtures at wetting surfaces. The thickness of the wetting layer R1 grows with time t as a power law (R1∼tθ). We find that hydrodynamic effects result in a crossover of the growth exponent from θ≃1/3 to 1. We also present results for the layerwise correlation functions and domain length scales.
