Localization and coherent dynamics of excitons in the two-dimensional optical spectrum of molecular J-aggregates

First-principles simulation of excitation energy transfer and transient absorption spectroscopy in the CP29 light-harvesting complex

The dynamics of delocalized excitons in light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) can be investigated using different experimental techniques, and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is one of the most valuable methods for this purpose. A careful interpretation of TA spectra is essential for the clarification of excitation energy transfer (EET) processes occurring during light-harvesting. However, even in the simplest LHCs, a physical model is needed to interpret transient spectra as the number of EET processes occurring at the same time is very large to be disentangled from measurements alone. Physical EET models are commonly built by fittings of the microscopic exciton Hamiltonians and exciton-vibrational parameters, an approach that can lead to biases. Here, we present a first-principles strategy to simulate EET and transient absorption spectra in LHCs, combining molecular dynamics and accurate multiscale quantum chemical calculations to obtain an independent estimate of the excitonic structure of the complex. The microscopic parameters thus obtained are then used in EET simulations to obtain the population dynamics and the related spectroscopic signature. We apply this approach to the CP29 minor antenna complex of plants for which we follow the EET dynamics and transient spectra after excitation in the chlorophyll b region. Our calculations reproduce all the main features observed in the transient absorption spectra and provide independent insight on the excited-state dynamics of CP29. The approach presented here lays the groundwork for the accurate simulation of EET and unbiased interpretation of transient spectra in multichromophoric systems.

Manifestation of Hydrogen Bonding and Exciton Delocalization on the Absorption and Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectra of Chlorosomes

Chlorosomes are supramolecular aggregates that contain thousands of bacteriochlorophyll molecules. They perform the most efficient ultrafast excitation energy transfer of all natural light-harvesting complexes. Their broad absorption band optimizes light capture. In this study, we identify the microscopic sources of the disorder causing the spectral width and reveal how it affects the excited state properties and the optical response of the system. We combine molecular dynamics, quantum chemical calculations, and response function calculations to achieve this goal. The predicted linear and two-dimensional electronic spectra are found to compare well with experimental data reproducing all key spectral features. Our analysis of the microscopic model reveals the interplay of static and dynamic disorder from the molecular perspective. We find that hydrogen bonding motifs are essential for a correct description of the spectral line shape. Furthermore, we find that exciton delocalization over tens to hundreds of molecules is consistent with the two-dimensional electronic spectra.

Plasmon-Enhanced Exciton Delocalization in Squaraine-Type Molecular Aggregates

Enlarging exciton coherence lengths in molecular aggregates is critical for enhancing the collective optical and transport properties of molecular thin film nanostructures or devices. We demonstrate that the exciton coherence length of squaraine aggregates can be increased from 10 to 24 molecular units at room temperature when preparing the aggregated thin film on a metallic rather than a dielectric substrate. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy measurements reveal a much lower degree of inhomogeneous line broadening for aggregates on a gold film, pointing to a reduced disorder. The result is corroborated by simulations based on a Frenkel exciton model including exciton-plasmon coupling effects. The simulation shows that localized, energetically nearly resonant excitons on spatially well separated segments can be radiatively coupled via delocalized surface plasmon polariton modes at a planar molecule-gold interface. Such plasmon-enhanced delocalization of the exciton wave function is of high importance for improving the coherent transport properties of molecular aggregates on the nanoscale. Additionally, it may help tailor the collective optical response of organic materials for quantum optical applications.

Computational spectroscopy of complex systems

Numerous linear and non-linear spectroscopic techniques have been developed to elucidate structural and functional information of complex systems ranging from natural systems, such as proteins and light-harvesting systems, to synthetic systems, such as solar cell materials and light-emitting diodes. The obtained experimental data can be challenging to interpret due to the complexity and potential overlapping spectral signatures. Therefore, computational spectroscopy plays a crucial role in the interpretation and understanding of spectral observables of complex systems. Computational modeling of various spectroscopic techniques has seen significant developments in the past decade, when it comes to the systems that can be addressed, the size and complexity of the sample types, the accuracy of the methods, and the spectroscopic techniques that can be addressed. In this Perspective, I will review the computational spectroscopy methods that have been developed and applied for infrared and visible spectroscopies in the condensed phase. I will discuss some of the questions that this has allowed answering. Finally, I will discuss current and future challenges and how these may be addressed.

Exciton delocalization length in chlorosomes investigated by lineshape dynamics of two-dimensional electronic spectra

A chlorosome, a photosynthetic light-harvesting complex found in green sulfur bacteria, is an aggregate of self-assembled pigments and is optimized for efficient light harvesting and energy transfer under dim-light conditions. In this highly-disordered aggregate, the absorption and transfer of photoexcitation energy are governed by the degree of disorder. To describe the disorder, the number of molecules forming excitons, which is termed exciton delocalization length (EDL), is a relevant parameter because the EDL sensitively changes with the disorder of the constituent molecules. In this work, we determined the EDL in chlorosomes using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2D-ES). Since spectral features correlated with EDL are spread out in the two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectra, we were able to determine the EDL accurately without the effects of homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening. In particular, by taking advantage of the multi-dimensionality and the time evolution of 2D spectra, we not only determined the excitation frequency dependence of EDL but also monitored the temporal change of EDL. We found that the EDL is ∼7 at 77 K and ∼6 at 298 K and increases with the excitation frequency, with the maximum located well above the maximum of the absorption spectrum of chlorosomes. The spectral profile of EDL changes rapidly within 100 fs and becomes flat over time due to dephasing of initial exciton coherence. From the coherent oscillations superimposed on the decay of EDL, it was learned that high-frequency phonons are more activated at 298 K than at 77 K.

Molecular versus Excitonic Disorder in Individual Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems

Natural light-harvesting antennae employ a dense array of chromophores to optimize energy transport via the formation of delocalized excited states (excitons), which are critically sensitive to spatio-energetic variations of the molecular structure. Identifying the origin and impact of such variations is highly desirable for understanding and predicting functional properties yet hard to achieve due to averaging of many overlapping responses from individual systems. Here, we overcome this problem by measuring the heterogeneity of synthetic analogues of natural antennae-self-assembled molecular nanotubes-by two complementary approaches: single-nanotube photoluminescence spectroscopy and ultrafast 2D correlation. We demonstrate remarkable homogeneity of the nanotube ensemble and reveal that ultrafast (∼50 fs) modulation of the exciton frequencies governs spectral broadening. Using multiscale exciton modeling, we show that the dominance of homogeneous broadening at the exciton level results from exchange narrowing of strong static disorder found for individual molecules within the nanotube. The detailed characterization of static and dynamic disorder at the exciton as well as the molecular level presented here opens new avenues in analyzing and predicting dynamic exciton properties, such as excitation energy transport.

Simulating Fluorescence-Detected Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy of Multichromophoric Systems

We present a theory for modeling fluorescence-detected two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of multichromophoric systems. The theory is tested by comparison of the predicted spectra of the light-harvesting complex LH2 with experimental data. A qualitative explanation of the strong cross-peaks as compared to conventional two-dimensional electronic spectra is given. The strong cross-peaks are attributed to the clean ground-state signal that is revealed when the annihilation of exciton pairs created on the same LH2 complex cancels oppositely signed signals from the doubly excited state. This annihilation process occurs much faster than the nonradiative relaxation. Furthermore, the line shape difference is attributed to slow dynamics, exciton delocalization within the bands, and intraband exciton-exciton annihilation. This is in line with existing theories presented for model systems. We further propose the use of time-resolved fluorescence-detected two-dimensional spectroscopy to study state-resolved exciton-exciton annihilation.

Direct observation of exciton-exciton interactions

Natural light harvesting as well as optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices depend on efficient transport of energy following photoexcitation. Using common spectroscopic methods, however, it is challenging to discriminate one-exciton dynamics from multi-exciton interactions that arise when more than one excitation is present in the system. Here we introduce a coherent two-dimensional spectroscopic method that provides a signal only in case that the presence of one exciton influences the behavior of another one. Exemplarily, we monitor exciton diffusion by annihilation in a perylene bisimide-based J-aggregate. We determine quantitatively the exciton diffusion constant from exciton–exciton-interaction 2D spectra and reconstruct the annihilation-free dynamics for large pump powers. The latter enables for ultrafast spectroscopy at much higher intensities than conventionally possible and thus improves signal-to-noise ratios for multichromophore systems; the former recovers spatio–temporal dynamics for a broad range of phenomena in which exciton interactions are present.

Some photo-physical processes in multichromophore systems might get triggered only if two excitations are present. Here, the authors introduce exciton–exciton-interaction 2D spectroscopy, which is a non-linear optical method that can selectively track the time evolution of such effects.

Spectral line shapes in linear absorption and two-dimensional spectroscopy with skewed frequency distributions

The effect of Gaussian dynamics on the line shapes in linear absorption and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy is well understood as the second-order cumulant expansion provides exact spectra. Gaussian solvent dynamics can be well analyzed using slope line analysis of two-dimensional correlation spectra as a function of the waiting time between pump and probe fields. Non-Gaussian effects are not as well understood, even though these effects are common in nature. The interpretation of the spectra, thus far, relies on complex case to case analysis. We investigate spectra resulting from two physical mechanisms for non-Gaussian dynamics, one relying on the anharmonicity of the bath and the other on non-linear couplings between bath coordinates. These results are compared with outcomes from a simpler log-normal dynamics model. We find that the skewed spectral line shapes in all cases can be analyzed in terms of the log-normal model, with a minimal number of free parameters. The effect of log-normal dynamics on the spectral line shapes is analyzed in terms of frequency correlation functions, maxline slope analysis, and anti-diagonal linewidths. A triangular line shape is a telltale signature of the skewness induced by log-normal dynamics. We find that maxline slope analysis, as for Gaussian dynamics, is a good measure of the solvent dynamics for log-normal dynamics.

Lévy Defects in Matrix-Immobilized J Aggregates: Tracing Intra-and Intersegmental Exciton Relaxation

One-dimensional J aggregates present narrow and intense absorption and emission spectra that are interesting for photonics applications. Matrix immobilization of the aggregates, as required for most device architectures, has recently been shown to induce a non-Gaussian (Lévy type) defect distribution with heavy tails, expected to influence exciton relaxation. Here we perform two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) in one-dimensional J aggregates of the cyanine dye TDBC, immobilized in a gel matrix, and we quantitatively model 2DES maps by nonlinear optimization coupled to quantum mechanical calculations of the transient excitonic response. We find that immobilization causes strong non-Gaussian off-diagonal disorder, leading to a segmentation of the chains. Intersegmental exciton transfer is found to proceed on the picosecond time scale, causing a long-lasting excitation memory. These findings can be used to inform the design of optoelectronic devices based on J aggregates as they allow for control of exciton properties by disorder management.

Exciton dynamics in perturbed vibronic molecular aggregates

A site specific perturbation of a photo-excited molecular aggregate can lead to a localization of excitonic energy. We investigate this localization dynamics for laser-prepared excited states. Changing the parameters of the electric field significantly influences the exciton localization which offers the possibility for a selective control of this process. This is demonstrated for aggregates possessing a single vibrational degree of freedom per monomer unit. It is shown that the effects identified for the molecular dimer can be generalized to larger aggregates with a high density of vibronic states.

Simulation of femtosecond two-dimensional electronic spectra of conical intersections

We have simulated femtosecond two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectra for an excited-state conical intersection using the wave-function version of the equation-of-motion phase-matching approach. We show that 2D spectra at fixed values of the waiting time provide information on the structure of the vibronic eigenstates of the conical intersection, while the evolution of the spectra with the waiting time reveals predominantly ground-state wave-packet dynamics. The results show that 2D spectra of conical intersection systems differ significantly from those obtained for chromophores with well separated excited-state potential-energy surfaces. The spectral signatures which can be attributed to conical intersections are discussed.

Coherent Exciton Dynamics in the Presence of Underdamped Vibrations

Recent ultrafast optical experiments show that excitons in large biological light-harvesting complexes are coupled to molecular vibration modes. These high-frequency vibrations will not only affect the optical response, but also drive the exciton transport. Here, using a model dimer system, the frequency of the underdamped vibration is shown to have a strong effect on the exciton dynamics such that quantum coherent oscillations in the system can be present even in the case of strong noise. Two mechanisms are identified to be responsible for the enhanced transport efficiency: critical damping due to the tunable effective strength of the coupling to the bath, and resonance coupling where the vibrational frequency coincides with the energy gap in the system. The interplay of these two mechanisms determines parameters responsible for the most efficient transport, and these optimal control parameters are comparable to those in realistic light-harvesting complexes. Interestingly, oscillations in the excitonic coherence at resonance are suppressed in comparison to the case of an off-resonant vibration.

Dynamical Localization Limiting the Coherent Transport Range of Excitons in Organic Crystals

Exciton or energy transport in organic crystals is commonly described by a series of incoherent hoppings. This picture is no longer valid if the transport range is on the order of the exciton coherent (or delocalization) size. However, coherent effects are often neglected because the exciton wave function generally localizes to a few molecules within an ultrafast time scale (<1 ps) after photoexcitation. Here, by using time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and nanometer-thick zinc phthalocyanine crystals, we are able to observe a transition from the coherent to incoherent transport regime while the exciton coherent size is decreasing as a function of time. During the transition, a distinct phonon mode is excited, which suggests that the electron-vibrational interaction localizes the exciton and reduces its coherent size. It is anticipated that the coherent transport range can be increased by controlling the electron-vibrational coupling. An enhanced coherent transport range can be advantageous in applications such as organic photovoltaics.

Mapping the Evolution of Spatial Exciton Coherence through Time-Resolved Fluorescence

Quantum coherence is expected to have a positive effect on the transfer efficiency of excitation energy through photosynthetic aggregates and conjugated polymers, but its significance to the functioning of these molecular assemblies remains largely unknown. We propose a new experimental means to monitor the coherence between distant molecular sites on a time scale relevant to energy transfer. Through numerical calculations, we demonstrate that the range of such spatial coherence continually scales as the 0-0 to 0-1 vibronic peak ratio in time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. As such, this observable allows one to monitor the coherent evolution of an excited state, displaying the large coherence length following optical excitation, and the subsequent dephasing over time.

Polaron dynamics in two-dimensional photon-echo spectroscopy of molecular rings

We have developed a new approach to the computation of third-order spectroscopic signals of molecular rings, by incorporating the Davydov soliton theory into the nonlinear response function formalism. The Davydov D1 and D Ansätze have been employed to treat the interactions between the excitons and the primary phonons, allowing for a full description of arbitrary exciton-phonon coupling strengths. As an illustration, we have simulated a series of optical 2D spectra for two models of molecular rings.

First-principles calculation of the optical properties of an amphiphilic cyanine dye aggregate

Using a first-principles approach, we calculate electronic and optical properties of molecular aggregates of the dye amphi-pseudoisocyanine, whose structures we obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the self-aggregation process. Using quantum chemistry methods, we translate the structural information into an effective time-dependent Frenkel exciton Hamiltonian for the dominant optical transitions in the aggregate. This Hamiltonian is used to calculate the absorption spectrum. Detailed analysis of the dynamic fluctuations in the molecular transition energies and intermolecular excitation transfer interactions in this Hamiltonian allows us to elucidate the origin of the relevant time scales; short time scales, on the order of up to a few hundreds of femtoseconds, result from internal motions of the dye molecules, while the longer (a few picosecond) time scales we ascribe to environmental motions. The absorption spectra of the aggregate structures obtained from MD feature a blue-shifted peak compared to that of the monomer; thus, our aggregates can be classified as H-aggregates, although considerable oscillator strength is carried by states along the entire exciton band. Comparison to the experimental absorption spectrum of amphi-PIC aggregates shows that the simulated line shape is too wide, pointing to too much disorder in the internal structure of the simulated aggregates.

Vibronic and vibrational coherences in two-dimensional electronic spectra of supramolecular J-aggregates

In J-aggregates of cyanine dyes, closely packed molecules form mesoscopic tubes with nanometer-diameter and micrometer-length. Their efficient energy transfer pathways make them suitable candidates for artificial light harvesting systems. This great potential calls for an in-depth spectroscopic analysis of the underlying energy deactivation network and coherence dynamics. We use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy with sub-10 fs laser pulses in combination with two-dimensional decay-associated spectra analysis to describe the population flow within the aggregate. Based on the analysis of Fourier-transform amplitude maps, we distinguish between vibrational or vibronic coherence dynamics as the origin of pronounced oscillations in our two-dimensional electronic spectra.

Photon emission statistics and photon tracking in single-molecule spectroscopy of molecular aggregates: dimers and trimers

Based on the generating function formalism, we investigate broadband photon statistics of emission for single dimers and trimers driven by a continuous monochromatic laser field. In particular, we study the first and second moments of the emission statistics, which are the fluorescence excitation line shape and Mandel's Q parameter. Numerical results for this line shape and the Q parameter versus laser frequency in the limit of long measurement times are obtained. We show that in the limit of small Rabi frequencies and laser frequencies close to resonance with one of the one-exciton states, the results for the line shape and Q parameter reduce to those of a two-level monomer. For laser frequencies halfway the transition frequency of a two-exciton state, the photon bunching effect associated with two-photon absorption processes is observed. This super-Poissonian peak is characterized in terms of the ratio between the two-photon absorption line shape and the underlying two-level monomer line shapes. Upon increasing the Rabi frequency, the Q parameter shows a transition from super- to sub- to super-Poissonian statistics. Results of broadband photon statistics are also discussed in the context of a transition (frequency) resolved photon detection scheme, photon tracking, which provides a greater insight in the different physical processes that occur in the multi-level systems.

Line narrowing of excited-state transitions in nonlinear polarization spectroscopy: application to water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein

The homogeneous linewidth of dye aggregates like photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes contains important information about energy transfer and relaxation times that is, however, masked by inhomogeneous broadening caused by static disorder. Whereas there exist line narrowing techniques for the study of low-energy exciton states, the homogeneous linewidth of the high-energy states is not so easy to decipher. Here we present a microscopic theory for nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain that contains a dynamic aggregate selection revealing the homogeneous linewidth of these states. The theory is applied to the water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein for which the high-energy exciton state was predicted to exhibit a sub-100-fs lifetime.

An Efficient N(3)-Scaling Propagation Scheme for Simulating Two-Dimensional Infrared and Visible Spectra

In this paper, we develop and test a new approximate propagation scheme for calculating two-dimensional infrared and visible spectra. The new scheme scales one order more efficiently with the system size than the existing schemes. A Trotter type of approximation is used for the matrix exponent that describes the time evolution of the quantum system. This is needed for calculating the third-order response functions governing the two-dimensional infrared and visible spectra. The method is tested on a model dimer system, the amide I spectrum of the Gramicidin A antimicrobial peptide, the spectrum of the OH stretching vibration of bulk water, and a homogeneous J-aggregate. Errors due to the approximation are hardly observable in the calculated spectra. Scaling simulations with different system sizes are used to demonstrate that the new scheme is indeed scaling with the system size to the third power, one order faster than the existing methods.

Two-dimensional vibronic spectroscopy of coherent wave-packet motion

We theoretically study two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopic signals obtained from femtosecond pulse interactions with diatomic molecules. The vibrational wave-packet dynamics is monitored in the signals. During the motion in anharmonic potentials the wave packets exhibit vibrational revivals and fractional revivals which are associated with particular quantum phases. The time-dependent phase changes are identified by inspection of the complex-valued 2D spectra. We use the Na(2) molecule as a numerical example and discuss various pulse sequences which yield information about vibrational level structure and phase relationships in different electronic states.

From atomistic modeling to excitation transfer and two-dimensional spectra of the FMO light-harvesting complex

The experimental observation of long-lived quantum coherences in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) light-harvesting complex at low temperatures has challenged general intuition in the field of complex molecular systems and provoked considerable theoretical effort in search of explanations. Here we report on room-temperature calculations of the excited-state dynamics in FMO using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. Thus we obtain trajectories for the Hamiltonian of this system which contains time-dependent vertical excitation energies of the individual bacteriochlorophyll molecules and their mutual electronic couplings. The distribution of energies and couplings is analyzed together with possible spatial correlations. It is found that in contrast to frequent assumptions the site energy distribution is non-Gaussian. In a subsequent step, averaged wave packet dynamics is used to determine the exciton dynamics in the system. Finally, with the time-dependent Hamiltonian, linear and two-dimensional spectra are determined. The thus-obtained linear absorption line shape agrees well with experimental observation and is largely determined by the non-Gaussian site energy distribution. The two-dimensional spectra are in line with what one would expect by extrapolation of the experimental observations at lower temperatures and indicate almost total loss of long-lived coherences.

Theory and Simulation of the Environmental Effects on FMO Electronic Transitions

Long-lived quantum coherence has been experimentally observed in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) light-harvesting complex. It is much debated which role thermal effects play and if the observed low-temperature behavior arises also at physiological temperature. To contribute to this debate we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the coupling between the protein environment and the vertical excitation energies of individual bacteriochlorophyll molecules in the FMO complex of the green sulphur bacterium Chlorobaculum tepidum. The so-called spectral densities, which account for the environmental influence on the excited state dynamics, are determined from temporal autocorrelation functions of the energy gaps between ground and first excited states of the individual pigments. Although the overall shape of the spectral density is found to be rather similar for all pigments, variations in their magnitude can be seen. Differences between the spectral densities for the pigments of the FMO monomer and FMO trimer are also presented.

Solvent-dependent spectral diffusion in a hydrogen bonded "vibrational aggregate"

Two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2DIR) is used to measure the viscosity-dependent spectral diffusion of a model vibrational probe, Mn(2)(CO)(10) (dimanganese decacarbonyl, DMDC), in a series of alcohols with time scales ranging from 2.67 ps in methanol to 5.33 ps in 1-hexanol. Alcohol-alkane solvent mixtures were found to produce indistinguishable linear IR spectra, while still demonstrating viscosity-dependent spectral diffusion. Using a vibrational exciton model to characterize the inhomogeneous energy landscape, several analogies emerge with multichromophoric electronic systems, such as J-aggregates and light-harvesting protein complexes. An excitonic, local vibrational mode Hamiltonian parametrized to reproduce the vibrational structure of DMDC serves as a starting point from which site energies (i.e., local carbonyl frequencies) are given Gaussian distributed disorder. The model gives excellent agreement with both the linear IR spectrum and the inhomogeneous widths extracted from 2DIR, indicating the system can be considered to be a "vibrational aggregate." This model naturally leads to exchange narrowing due to disorder-induced exciton localization, producing line widths consistent with our 1D and 2D measurements. Further, the diagonal disorder alone effectively reduces the molecular symmetry, leading to the appearance of Raman bands in the IR spectrum in accord with the measurements. Here, we show that the static inhomogeneity of the excitonic model with disorder successfully captures the essential details of the 1D spectrum while predicting the degree of IR activity of forbidden modes as well as the inhomogeneous widths and relative magnitudes of the transition moments.

Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of molecular aggregates

The properties of molecular aggregates, coupled clusters of small molecules, are often challenging to unravel because of their inherent complexity and disordered environments. Their structure-function relationships are often far from obvious. However, their ability to efficiently channel excitation energy over remarkable distances, as is the case in photosynthetic light harvesting, is a compelling motivation to investigate them. Understanding and subsequently mimicking the processes in photosynthesis, for example, will set the stage for considerable advances in using light harvesting to fuel renewable energy technologies. Two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy is emerging as a nonlinear optical technique that provides significant insight into the interactions and dynamics of complex molecular systems. In addition to spectrally resolving excitation and emission energies over significant bandwidths with femtosecond resolution, this technique has already enabled discoveries about the structure and dynamics of photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes and other aggregates. Multiple capabilities unique to 2D electronic spectroscopy enable such findings. For example, the spectral resolution of excitation and emission combined with the ability to eliminate the effects of static disorder can reveal the homogeneous line width of a transition and the different dynamic contributions to it. Two dimensional spectroscopy is also sensitive to electronic coherence and has been employed to identify and characterize coherent excitation energy transfer dynamics in photosynthetic systems and conjugated polymers. The presence of cross-peaks, signals for which excitation and emission occur at different wavelengths, provides multiple forms of information. First, it allows the identification of states in congested spectra and reveals correlations between them. Second, we can track excitation energy flow from origin to terminus through multiple channels simultaneously. Finally, 2D electronic spectroscopy is uniquely sensitive to intermolecular electronic coupling through the sign and amplitude of the cross-peaks. This feature makes it possible to reveal spatial molecular configurations by probing electronic transitions. Another means of "resolving" these angstrom-scale arrangements is to manipulate the probing laser pulse polarizations. In this way, we can isolate and modulate specific processes in order to retrieve structural information. In this Account, we demonstrate these capabilities through a close collaboration between experiments and modeling on isolated photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes and also on J-aggregates. Each of the probed systems we describe offers insights that have both increased the utility of 2D electronic spectroscopy and led to discoveries about the molecular aggregates' dynamics and underlying structure.
