Abstract
Superfluid helium nanodroplets are unique nanomatrices for the isolation and study of transient molecular species, such as radicals, carbenes, and ions. In this work, isomers of C3H4+ were produced upon electron ionization of propyne and allene molecules and interrogated via infrared spectroscopy inside He nanodroplet matrices. It was found that the spectrum of C3H4+ has at least three distinct groups of bands. The relative intensities of the bands depend on the precursor employed and its pickup pressure, which indicates the presence of at least three different isomers. Two isomers were identified as allene and propyne radical cations. The third isomer, which has several new bands in the range of 3100-3200 cm-1, may be the elusive vinylmethylene H2C=CH-CH+ radical cation. The observed bands for the allene and propyne cations are in good agreement with the results of density functional theory calculations. However, there is only moderate agreement between the new bands and the theoretically calculated vinylmethylene spectrum, which indicates more work is necessary to unambiguously assign it.

Abstract
The photoionisation of the metastable rare-gas atoms Rg = Ar, Kr and Xe is investigated at the Rg+ […](ns)2(np)5 2P3/2 ← Rg[…](ns)2(np)5((n + 1)s) 13P2 photoionisation threshold (n = 3, 4 and 5 for Ar, Kr and Xe) using the technique of pulsed-ramped-field-ionisation zero-kinetic-energy (PRFI-ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. This technique, which monitors the field ionisation of high Rydberg states induced by a slowly growing electric-field ramp after a prepulse of opposite polarity, was recently introduced to record photoelectron spectra with high resolution and high sensitivity [Harper, Chen, Boyé-Péronne and Gans, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2022, 117, 9353]. A tunable UV laser system with a bandwidth of 30 MHz is used here to establish the factors determining the resolution and overall accuracy of this new method. In particular, the effects of stray electric fields, and of the magnitude of the prepulse and the field ramp on PRFI-ZEKE photoelectron spectra are studied by combining experiments with numerical simulations of the field-ionisation of high Rydberg states and of the electron flight times from the ionisation spot to the detector. A spectral resolution of 0.05 cm-1 is demonstrated in the photoelectron spectrum of metastable Ar.

Abstract
Structural rearrangements in ions are essential for understanding the composition and evolution of energetic and chemically active environments. This study explores the interconversion routes for simple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, namely naphthalene and azulene radical cations (C10 H8 + ), by combining mass spectrometry and vacuum ultraviolet tunable synchrotron radiation through the chemical monitoring technique. Products of ion-molecule reactions are used to probe C10 H8 + structures that are formed as a function of their internal energies. Isomerisation from azulene radical cation towards naphthalene radical cation in a timescale faster than 80 μs was monitored, whereas no reverse isomerisation was observed in the same time window. When energising C10 H8 + with more than 6 eV, the reactivity of C10 H8 + unveils the formation of a new isomeric group with a contrasted reactivity compared with naphthalene and azulene cations. We tentatively assigned these structures to phenylvinylacetylene cations.

Abstract
Mass spectrometry is a powerful tool but when used on its own, without specific activation of ions, the ion mass is the single observable and the structural information is absent. One way of retrieving this information is by using ion-molecule reactions. We propose a general method to disentangle isomeric structures by combining mass spectrometry, tunable synchrotron light source, and quantum-chemistry calculations. We use reactive chemical monitoring technique, which consists in tracking reactivity changes as a function of photoionization energy i.e. the ionic structure. We illustrate the power of this technique with charge transfer reactions of C6H4+· isomers with allene and propyne and discuss its universal applicability. Furthermore, we emphasize the special reactivity characteristics of distonic ions, where strong charge transfer reactivity but very limited reactivity involving bond formation and following cleavages were observed and attributed to the unconventional ortho -benzyne distonic cation.

Abstract
Dynamic shaping of the adiabatic tunneling barrier in the S-H bond extension coordinate of several ortho-substituted thiophenols has been found to be mediated by low-frequency out-of-plane vibrational modes, which are parallel to the coupling vector of the branching plane comprising the conical intersection. The S-H predissociation tunneling rate (k) measured when exciting to the S1 zero-point level of 2-methoxythiophenol (44 ps)-1 increases abruptly, to k ≈ (22 ps)-1, at the energy corresponding to excitation of the 152 cm-1 out-of-plane vibrational mode and then falls back to k ≈ (40 ps)-1 when the in-plane mode is excited at 282 cm-1. Similar resonance-like peaks in plots of S1 tunneling rate versus internal energy are observed when exciting the corresponding low-frequency out-of-plane modes in the S1 states of 2-fluorothiophenol and 2-chlorothiophenol. This experiment provides clear-cut evidence for dynamical "shaping" of the lower-lying adiabatic potential energy surfaces by the higher-lying conical intersection seam, which dictates the multidimensional tunneling dynamics.

Abstract
Electron bombardment during deposition of an Ar matrix containing a small proportion of allene generated allene cations. Further irradiation of the matrix sample at 385 nm destroyed the allene cations and formed propyne cations in solid Ar. Both cations were identified according to previously reported IR absorption bands. Using a similar technique, we recorded the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of allene cations in solid Ar. The vibrationally resolved progression recorded in the range of 266-237 nm with intervals of about 800 cm-1 was assigned to the A2E ← X2E transition of allene cations, and the broad continuum absorption recorded in the region of 229-214 nm was assigned to their B2A1 ← X2E transition. These assignments were made based on the observed photolytic behavior of the progressions and the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths calculated using time-dependent density functional theory.
