Validity of Effective Potentials in Crowded Solutions of Linear and Ring Polymers with Reversible Bonds

We perform simulations to compute the effective potential between the centers-of-mass of two polymers with reversible bonds. We investigate the influence of the topology on the potential by employing linear and ring backbones for the precursor (unbonded) polymer, finding that it leads to qualitatively different effective potentials. In the linear and ring cases the potentials can be described by Gaussians and generalized exponentials, respectively. The interactions are more repulsive for the ring topology, in analogy with known results in the absence of bonding. We also investigate the effect of the specific sequence of the reactive groups along the backbone (periodic or with different degrees of randomness), establishing that it has a significant impact on the effective potentials. When the reactive sites of both polymers are chemically orthogonal so that only intramolecular bonds are possible, the interactions become more repulsive the closer to periodic the sequence is. The opposite effect is found if both polymers have the same types of reactive sites and intermolecular bonds can be formed. We test the validity of the effective potentials in solution, in a broad range of concentrations from high dilution to far above the overlap concentration. For this purpose, we compare simulations of the effective fluid and test particle route calculations with simulations of the real all-monomer system. Very good agreement is found for the reversible linear polymers, indicating that unlike in their nonbonding counterparts many-body effects are minor even far above the overlap concentration. The agreement for the reversible rings is less satisfactory, and at high concentration the real system does not show the clustering behavior predicted by the effective potential. Results similar to the former ones are found for the partial self-correlations in ring/linear mixtures. Finally, we investigate the possibility of creating, at high concentrations, a gel of two interpenetrated reversible networks. For this purpose we simulate a 50/50 two-component mixture of reversible polymers with orthogonal chemistry for the reactive sites, so that intermolecular bonds are only formed between polymers of the same component. As predicted by both the theoretical phase diagram and the simulations of the effective fluid, the two networks in the all-monomer mixture do not interpenetrate, and phase separation (demixing) is observed instead.

Self-assembly of binary solutions to complex structures

Self-assembly in natural and synthetic molecular systems can create complex aggregates or materials whose properties and functionalities rise from their internal structure and molecular arrangement. The key microscopic features that control such assemblies remain poorly understood, nevertheless. Using classical density functional theory, we demonstrate how the intrinsic length scales and their interplay in terms of interspecies molecular interactions can be used to tune soft matter self-assembly. We apply our strategy to two different soft binary mixtures to create guidelines for tuning intermolecular interactions that lead to transitions from a fully miscible, liquid-like uniform state to formation of simple and core-shell aggregates and mixed aggregate structures. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the interspecies interactions and system composition can be used to control concentration gradients of component species within these assemblies. The insight generated by this work contributes toward understanding and controlling soft multi-component self-assembly systems. Additionally, our results aid in understanding complex biological assemblies and their function and provide tools to engineer molecular interactions in order to control polymeric and protein-based materials, pharmaceutical formulations, and nanoparticle assemblies.

Dynamical density-functional-theory-based modeling of tissue dynamics: Application to tumor growth

We present a theoretical framework based on an extension of dynamical density-functional theory (DDFT) for describing the structure and dynamics of cells in living tissues and tumors. DDFT is a microscopic statistical mechanical theory for the time evolution of the density distribution of interacting many-particle systems. The theory accounts for cell-pair interactions, different cell types, phenotypes, and cell birth and death processes (including cell division), to provide a biophysically consistent description of processes bridging across the scales, including describing the tissue structure down to the level of the individual cells. Analysis of the model is presented for single-species and two-species cases, the latter aimed at describing competition between tumor and healthy cells. In suitable parameter regimes, model results are consistent with biological observations. Of particular note, divergent tumor growth behavior, mirroring metastatic and benign growth characteristics, are shown to be dependent on the cell-pair-interaction parameters.

Solidification in soft-core fluids: Disordered solids from fast solidification fronts

Using dynamical density functional theory we calculate the speed of solidification fronts advancing into a quenched two-dimensional model fluid of soft-core particles. We find that solidification fronts can advance via two different mechanisms, depending on the depth of the quench. For shallow quenches, the front propagation is via a nonlinear mechanism. For deep quenches, front propagation is governed by a linear mechanism and in this regime we are able to determine the front speed via a marginal stability analysis. We find that the density modulations generated behind the advancing front have a characteristic scale that differs from the wavelength of the density modulation in thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e., the spacing between the crystal planes in an equilibrium crystal. This leads to the subsequent development of disorder in the solids that are formed. In a one-component fluid, the particles are able to rearrange to form a well-ordered crystal, with few defects. However, solidification fronts in a binary mixture exhibiting crystalline phases with square and hexagonal ordering generate solids that are unable to rearrange after the passage of the solidification front and a significant amount of disorder remains in the system.

Particle segregation in a sedimenting bidisperse soft sphere system

We study the sedimentation process of a binary colloidal soft sphere system where significant overlaps of the particles are possible. We employ estimates of the equation of states in the small and large pressure limit in order to predict the final states of the sedimentation process. Furthermore, Brownian dynamics simulations were performed in order to confirm the predictions and to explore the dynamics of the sedimentation. We observe that the segregation process due to gravity usually consists of multiple steps. Instead of single particles moving upwards or downwards we usually observe that first local segregation occurs, then clusters consisting of particles of one species are formed that finally sink towards their equilibrium position within the final sedimentation profile. The possible final states include complex phases like a phase consisting of large particles on the top and the bottom of the system with small particles in between. We also observe metastable network-like structures.

Hopping and diffusion of ultrasoft particles in cluster crystals in the explicit presence of a solvent

We have investigated diffusion and hopping processes in a cluster crystal formed from mesoscopic, ultrasoft particles. In contrast to previous contributions we have explicitly included in our investigations the microscopic solvent by using a simulation scheme that takes the induced hydrodynamic interactions into account as faithfully as possible. In our investigations we first focused on the processes of migration of the ultrasoft particles. By evaluating dynamical correlation functions we were able to demonstrate that the presence of the solvent does indeed have an important impact on the diffusion and hopping processes of the particles: this applies in particular to the diffusive behaviour, to the angular orientation of the jump events and to the spatial extents of these events. In a second set-up we have added non-cluster-forming ultrasoft particles to the system, investigating thus the impact of the solvent and that of the mutual interaction of the two species of ultrasoft particles on their respective dynamic behaviours. Our investigations clearly demonstrate, beside the expected significant role that the solvent plays in this set-up, that diffusion and the jump processes show distinct differences for the two particle species.

A density-functional theory study of microphase formation in binary Gaussian mixtures

We use density-functional theory to study the formation of inhomogeneous phases in a binary mixture of particles interacting by repulsive, athermal Gaussian potentials with suitably chosen strengths and ranges. Both the potential parameters and the free-energy functional are the same as those adopted in a previous investigation by other authors (Archer A J, Likos C N and Evans R 2004 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16 L297), but here a fully numerical minimization of the functional is performed, without any assumption about the functional form of the density profile. We find lamellar, rod and cluster phases. In the lamellar phase, the two species arrange into intercalating stripes; in the rod and cluster phases, the minority species is localized at the site of a periodic lattice, either triangular (for rods) or body-centred cubic (for clusters), while the other species is distributed non-uniformly in the remaining region, so that it forms a percolating network. The order of the transition from the homogeneous to the inhomogeneous phase and the phase diagram of the mixture are also discussed.
