Abstract
In this study, a set of 10 positional indolocarbazole (ICz) isomers substituted with dicyanomethylene groups connected via para or meta positions are computationally investigated with the aim of exploring the efficiency of structural isomerism and substitution position in controlling their optical and electronic properties. Unrestricted density functional theory (DFT), a spin-flip time-dependent DFT approach, and the multireference CASSCF/NEVPT2 method have been applied to correlate the diradical character with the energetic trends (i.e., singlet-triplet energy gaps). In addition, the nucleus-independent chemical shift together with ACID plots and Raman intensity calculations were used to strengthen the relationship between the diradical character and (anti)aromaticity. Our study reveals that the substitution pattern and structural isomerism represent a very effective way to tune the diradical properties in ICz-based systems with meta-substituted systems with a V-shaped structure displaying the largest diradical character. Thus, this work contributes to the elucidation of the challenging chemical reactivity and physical properties of diradicaloid systems, guiding experimental chemists to produce new molecules with desirable properties.

Abstract
Using the spin-unrestricted density functional theory method, we investigate the interplay between the diradical character y and second hyperpolarizabilities γ (the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties at the molecular scale) of corannulene derivatives with two phenoxyl radicals. This molecule in the singlet state exhibits intermediate y and thus displays a significantly larger γ value than the triplet state and the closed-shell bis-phenol analogue. We also examine the planar molecules involving a coronene moiety in place of the curved corannulene. The intermediate y and large γ values of the corannulene systems are found to originate not from their curved skeleton but from the equilibrium between benzenoid/quinoid resonance forms due to delocalization of the radical electrons of the terminal phenoxyl rings. The longitudinal γ value of the singlet state is found to be comparable to that of s-indaceno[1,2,3-cd;5,6,7-c'd']diphenalene, which is known to be one of the organic molecules with the largest two-photon absorption cross section in this size of pure hydrocarbons. The present system is thus expected to be a promising candidate for highly efficient open-shell NLO molecules.

Abstract
For more than 30 years, nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of molecular systems have been actively studied both theoretically and experimentally due to their potential applications in photonics and optoelectronics. Most of the NLO molecular systems are closed-shell species, while recently open-shell molecular species have been theoretically proposed as a new class of NLO systems, which exhibit larger NLO properties than the traditional closed-shell NLO systems. In particular, the third-order NLO property, the second hyperpolarizability γ, was found to be strongly correlated to the diradical character y, which is a quantum-chemically defined index of effective bond weakness or of electron correlation: the γ values are enhanced in the intermediate y region as compared to the closed-shell (y = 0) and pure open-shell (y = 1) domains. This principle has been exemplified by accurate quantum-chemical calculations for polycyclic hydrocarbons including graphene nanoflakes, multinuclear transition-metal complexes, main group compounds, and so on. Subsequently, some of these predictions have been substantiated by experiments, including two-photon absorption. The fundamental mechanism of the y-γ correlation has been explained by using a simple two-site model and the valence configuration interaction method. On the basis of this y-γ principle, several molecular design guidelines for controlling γ have been proposed. They consist in tuning the diradical characters through chemical modifications of realistic open-shell singlet molecules. These results open a new path toward understanding the structure-NLO property relationships and toward realizing a new class of highly efficient NLO materials. Abstract
Multiphoton upconversion is a process where two or more photons are absorbed simultaneously to excite an electron to an excited state and, subsequently, the relaxation of electron gives rise to the emission of a photon with frequency greater than those of the absorbed photons. Materials possessing such property attracted attention due to applications in biological imaging, photodynamic therapy, three-dimensional optical data storage, frequency-upconverted lasing and optical power limiting. Here we report four-photon upconversion in metal–organic frameworks containing the ligand, trans, trans-9,10-bis(4-pyridylethenyl)anthracene. The ligand has a symmetrical acceptor–π–donor–π–acceptor structure and a singlet biradical electronic ground state, which boosted its multiphoton absorption cross-sections. We demonstrate that the upconversion efficiency can be enhanced by Förster resonance energy transfer within host–guest metal–organic frameworks consisting of encapsulated high quantum yielding guest molecules. Using these strategies, metal–organic framework materials, which can exhibit frequency-upconverted photoluminescence excited by simultaneous multiphoton absorption, can be rationally designed and synthesized. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combining the properties of the metal ions and organic ligands are been proposed for many applications. Here Quah et al. demonstrate multiphoton excitation fluorescence in MOF materials enhanced by high quantum yielding guest molecules and Förster resonance energy transfer.
