Viscoelastic behaviour and relaxation modes of one polyamic acid organogel studied by rheometers and dynamic light scattering

A novel polyamic acid (PAA from BAPMPO-BPDA) organogel was synthesized and characterized via dynamic light scattering (DLS), a classical rheometer, and diffusion wave spectroscopy (DWS). In situ monitoring was performed using a classical rheometer to observe the formation of the PAA organogel. The rheological curves confirm the formation of the PAA gel network and the origin of hydrogen bonding from the -NH- group (donor) and P[double bond, length as m-dash]O group (acceptor). The autocorrelation functions of PAA under different conditions (pure gel, gel with NaNO₃, gel with formamide) are measured via DLS, and different characteristic times are obtained via the CONTIN method. Three different relaxation modes of the PAA gel, i.e., fast, intermediate and slow modes, are observed. The fast and intermediate modes show a diffusive behaviour (τ ∼ q^-2), whereas the slow mode did not. When enough formamide is added into the PAA gel, the fast mode disappears; addition of enough salt (NaNO₃) leads to disappearance of the slow mode. The relationship between characteristic time and diffusion vector demonstrates that the different decorrelation modes consisted of two homodyne and two heterodyne components. Two single-exponential functions and two stretched exponential functions were used, and the different decorrelation modes of the PAA gel are expressed with a non-linear function, which fits the autocorrelation function very well. And the different decorrelation modes are also discussed. DWS results in the high-frequency region not only demonstrate the formation of a PAA gel network but also indicate that the semiflexible chains of PAA are due to electrostatic interaction. The DWS results at different time scales are analyzed by applying the de Gennes' reptation model.

How the Incorporation of Pluronic Block Copolymers Modulates the Response of Lipid Membranes to Mechanical Stress

We employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect that the incorporation of the nonionic amphiphilic copolymer known as Pluronic L64 has on the mechanical stability of a DPPC membrane. The simulations reveal that the incorporation of the polymer chains leads to membranes that can sustain increasing mechanical stresses. Analysis of mechanical, structural, and dynamic properties of the membrane shows that the polymer chains interact strongly with the lipids in the vicinity, restraining their mobility and imparting better mechanical stability to the membrane. The hybrid membranes under tension remain thicker, more ordered, and stiffer in comparison to their lipid analogues. Trans-bilayer lipid movements (flip-flop) are observed and appear to be triggered by the presence of the polymer chains. A careful analysis of the pore formation under high tensions reveals two distinctive mechanisms that depend on the distribution of the hydrophilic polymer blocks in the bilayer. Finally, the rate of growth of the formed membrane defects is slowed down in the presence of polymers. These findings show that Pluronic block copolymers could be exploited for the formation of optimized hybrid nanodevices with controlled elastic and dynamic properties.

In situ characterization of structural dynamics in swelling hydrogels

Characterizing the structural morphology and the local viscoelastic properties of soft complex systems raises significant challenges. Here we introduce a dynamic light scattering method capable of in situ, continuous monitoring of structural changes in evolving systems such as swelling gels. We show that the inherently non-stationary dynamics of embedded probes can be followed using partially coherent radiation, which effectively isolates only single scattering contributions even during the dramatic changes in the scattering regime. Using a simple and robust experimental setup, we demonstrate the ability to continuously monitor the structural dynamics of chitosan hydrogels formed by the Ag(+) ion-triggered gelation during their long-term swelling process. We demonstrate that both the local viscoelastic properties of the suspending medium and an effective cage size experienced by diffusing probe particles loaded into the hydrogel can be recovered and used to describe the structural dynamics of hydrogels with different levels of cross-linking. This characterization capability is critical for defining and controlling the hydrogel performance in different biomedical applications.

Phase diagram of the Pluronic L64-H2O micellar system from mechanical spectroscopy

The linear viscoelastic properties of aqueous Pluronic L64 solutions have been investigated at high copolymer concentrations (25-62 wt%) using our modified low-frequency mechanical spectroscopy. The concentration-temperature phase diagram of the L64/H(2)O system was constructed by studying the evolution of the loss modulus and loss tangent as temperature is increased at a fixed frequency. A particular attention was focused on the dynamics approaching the beginning and ending points (39% and 60%) of the fusiform gel region in the phase diagram. The dynamics is found to have a similar viscoelastic behavior at the low and high concentrations, where a frequency scaling expected for a static percolated network is exhibited. Moreover, with increasing temperature, the system above the critical gel concentration undergoes a transition from a viscoelastic liquid to a solid gel through a percolated particle network. Therefore, our results suggest that the formation of the gel is dominated by the percolation of the particle clusters.
