Abstract
Vibrational wave-packet dynamics on the ground electronic state of the neutral silver pentamer (Ag5) are studied by femtosecond (fs) pump-probe spectroscopy using the 'negative ion - to neutral - to positive ion' (NeNePo) excitation scheme. A vibrational wave packet is prepared on the 2A1 state of Ag5via photodetachment of mass-selected, cryogenically cooled Ag5- anions using a fs pump pulse. The temporal evolution of the vibrational wave packet is then probed by an ultrafast probe pulse via resonant multiphoton ionization to Ag5+. Frequency analysis of the fs NeNePo transients for pump-probe delay times from 0.2 to 8 ps reveals three primary beating frequencies at 157 cm-1, 101 cm-1 and 56 cm-1 as well as four weaker features. A comparison of these experimentally obtained beating frequencies to harmonic normal mode frequencies calculated from electronic structure calculations confirms that Ag5 in the gas phase adopts a planar trapezoidal geometry, similar to that previously observed in solid argon. The dependence of the ionization yield on the laser polarization indicates a s-d wave electron photodetachment from a 'p-type' occupied molecular orbital of Ag5. Franck-Condon analysis shows that both processes, photodetachment and subsequent photoionization determine the beating frequencies probed in the time-dependent cation yield. The present study extends the applicability of fs NeNePo spectroscopy to characterize the vibrational spectra in the far-IR frequency range in the absence of perturbations from a medium or a messenger atom to mass-selected neutral metal clusters with more than three atoms in the ground electronic states.

Abstract
Owing to strong quantum confinement effects and no periodic constraints, the geometric and electronic structures of silicon clusters differ from those of crystalline silicon. Although previous studies have elucidated the optical properties of silicon clusters, some issues remain unresolved. To address these, this study examined the size-dependent linear and nonlinear optical responses of silicon clusters through first-principles calculations. Silicon clusters exhibited lone-pair-electron-dominated optical response behaviors. With the investigated size range, the orientationally average polarizability (αave) and second-order hyperpolarizability (γave) increased with cluster size. However, αave and γave per atom exhibited no evident size-dependent trends owing to co-modulation of the lone-pair-number-to-atomic-number ratio and geometry. αave and γave were notably sensitive to the nuclear binding strength of lone-pair electrons. Thus, the nonlinear optical effects of silicon clusters are superior to those of phosphorus and sulfur clusters. This investigation offers valuable insights into the optical responses of atomic-precision clusters.

Abstract
Isolated transition metal clusters have been established as useful models for extended metal surfaces or deposited metal particles, to improve the understanding of their surface chemistry and of catalytic reactions. For this objective, an important milestone has been the development of experimental methods for the size-specific structural characterization of clusters and cluster complexes in the gas phase. This review focusses on the characterization of molecular ligands, their binding and activation by small transition metal clusters, using cluster-size specific infrared action spectroscopy. A comprehensive overview and a critical discussion of the experimental data available to date is provided, reaching from the initial results obtained using line-tuneable CO2 lasers to present-day studies applying infrared free electron lasers as well as other intense and broadly tuneable IR laser sources.

Abstract
This paper describes an experimental technique for studying neutral metal complexes using infrared + vacuum ultraviolet (IR+VUV) two-color ionization spectroscopy based on a tunable VUV free-electron laser (VUV-FEL). The preliminary IR spectroscopy results of mass-selected nickel tetracarbonyl are reported in this work. The results demonstrate that the tunable VUV-FEL light allows the selective ionization of a given neutral cluster free of confinement along with the recording of well-resolved IR spectra. As the ionization energies of many neutral clusters are accessible by a broadly tunable VUV-FEL (50-150 nm) and near-threshold ionization can be readily achieved, the proposed experimental method offers unique possibilities for the size-specific study of a wide variety of confinement-free neutral clusters.

Abstract
We recorded IR spectra for neutral cobalt clusters via two-color IR-UV ionization, using the Free Electron Laser for intracavity experiments (FELICE). Well-resolved IR spectra are presented for [Formula: see text] (n = 4-10, 13) and analyzed with the help of Density Functional Theory calculations using two different correlation exchange functionals: the revisited Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (revTPSS) and the frequently used Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) approaches. Although we have not performed an extensive structure search, we tentatively assign the spectra for all cluster sizes except for n = 7, and n = 10. We find that neither of the two functionals chosen clearly outperforms the other in predicting IR spectra, and that relatively low scaling factors of 0.82 (PBE) and 0.8 (revTPSS) are required. In contrast to the magnetic moments, the calculated electric dipole moments fluctuate strongly as a function of cluster size and could therefore be used as an indirect probe to the cluster structure.

Abstract
Silicon clusters with 3-50 atoms undergo isomerization/reversible dynamics or structural deformation at significantly lower temperatures of 350 K-500 K. Through Born Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamical (BOMD) simulations, the current study demonstrates that carbon alloying enhances the thermal stability of a silicon cluster. The study is carried out on a Si6 cluster which has been recently reported to undergo reversible dynamical movements using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. Present BOMD simulations validate the experimentally observed reversible atomic displacements (reversible dynamical movements) at finite temperatures which are seen to persist nearly up to 2000 K. Carbon alloying of Si6 is seen to stretch the threshold of reversible dynamics from 200 K to 600 K depending upon the alloying concentration of carbon in the cluster.

Abstract
Abstract
Ab initio methods based on density functional theory at B3LYP level have been applied in investigating the equilibrium geometries, growth patterns, relative stabilities, and electronic properties of Zr2-doped Si
n
clusters. The optimisation results shown that the lowest-energy configurations for Zr2Si
n
clusters do not keep the corresponding silicon framework unchanged, which reflects that the doped Zr atoms dramatically affect the most stable structures of the Si
n
clusters. By analysing the relative stabilities, it is found that the doping of zirconium atoms reduces the chemical stabilities of silicon host. The Zr2Si4 and Zr2Si7 clusters are the magic numbers. The natural population and natural electronic configuration analyses indicated that the Zr atoms possess positive charge for n=1–6 and negative charge for n=7–11. In addition, the chemical hardness, chemical potential, infrared, and Raman spectra are also discussed.

Abstract
We investigate the electronic density of states (DOS) of isolated neutral cobalt clusters by probing the temperature-modulated population of electronic states through UV photoionization. The temperature is controlled via resonant excitation of lattice vibrations using the free-electron laser FELICE, after which the vibrational and electronic systems equilibrate through the electron-phonon coupling, redistributing the population of electronic states. The data are analyzed by surface photoemission theory, modified to incorporate the realistic DOS.

Abstract
The laser vaporization cluster source has been used for the production of gas phase atomic clusters and metal-molecular complexes for 30 years. Numerous experiments in the chemistry and physics of clusters have employed this source. Its operation is simple in principle, but there are many subtle design features that influence the number and size of clusters produced, as well as their composition, charge state, and temperature. This article examines all aspects of the design of these cluster sources, discussing the relevant chemistry, physics, and mechanical aspects of experimental configurations employed by different labs. The principles detailed here provide a framework for the design and implementation of this source for new applications.

Abstract
Structural information for neutral magnesium oxide clusters has been obtained by a comparison of their experimental vibrational spectra with predictions from theory. (MgO)(n) clusters with n = 3-16 have been studied in the gas phase with a tunable IR-UV two-color ionization scheme and size-selective infrared spectra have been measured. These IR spectra are compared to the calculated spectra of the global minimum structures predicted by a hybrid ab initio genetic algorithm. The comparison shows clear evidence that clusters of the composition (MgO)(3k) (k = 1-5) form hexagonal tubes, which confirm previous theoretical predictions. For the intermediate sizes (n≠ 3k) cage-like structures containing hexagonal (MgO)(3) rings are identified. Except for the cubic (MgO)(4) no evidence for bulk like structures is found.

Abstract
The geometry of cationic silicon clusters doped with vanadium, Si(n)V(+) (n=12-16), is investigated by using infrared multiple photon dissociation of the corresponding rare gas complexes in combination with ab initio calculations. It is shown that the clusters are endohedral cages, and evidence is provided that Si(16)V(+) is a fluxional system with a symmetric Frank-Kasper geometry.
