Structural signatures of mobility on intermediate time scales in a supercooled fluid

Thermodynamic Insights into Variation in Thermomechanical and Physical Properties of Isotactic Polypropylene: Effect of Shear and Cooling Rates

In order to elucidate the effect of shear and cooling process on structural, thermomechanical, and physical properties of polymer melt, excess entropy, a thermodynamic quantity is calculated from radial distribution function generated from equilibrated parts of the molecular simulation trajectories. The structural properties are calculated, which includes the density of polypropylene melt, end to end distance, radius of gyration of the polypropylene polymer chain, and monomer-monomer radial distribution function. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation was employed to investigate the role of the applied shear rate on the properties of polypropylene. Furthermore, a range of cooling rates were employed to cool the melt. Thermomechanical properties, such as Young's modulus, and physical properties, such as glass transition temperature, were determined for different cases. Results showed that slow cooling and high shear substantially improved the Young's modulus and glass transition temperature of the i-PP. Furthermore, a two-body contribution to the excess entropy was used to elucidate the structure-property relationships in the polymer melt as well as the glassy state and the dependence of shear and cooling rate on these properties. We have used the Rosenfeld excess entropy-viscosity relationship to calculate the viscous behavior of the polymer under a steady shear condition.

Universal Relation between Entropy and Kinetics

Relating thermodynamic and kinetic properties is a conceptual challenge with many practical benefits. Here, based on first principles, we derive a rigorous inequality relating the entropy and the dynamic propagator of particle configurations. It is universal and applicable to steady states arbitrarily far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Applying the general relation to diffusive dynamics yields a relation between the entropy and the (normal or anomalous) diffusion coefficient. The relation can be used to obtain useful bounds for the late-time diffusion coefficient from the calculated steady-state entropy or, conversely, to estimate the entropy based on measured diffusion coefficients. We demonstrate the validity and usefulness of the relation through several examples and discuss its broad range of applications, in particular, for systems far from equilibrium.

Pathway of orientational symmetry breaking in crystallization of short n-alkane droplets: A molecular dynamics study

We carry out molecular dynamics simulations by using an all-atom model to study the nucleation and crystallization of n-alkane droplets under three-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional conditions. We focus on the development of orientational order of chains from a random state to a neatly ordered one. Two new methods, the map of symmetry breaking and the information entropy of chain orientations, are introduced to characterize the emerge and remelting phenomena of a primary nucleus at the early stage of crystallization. Stepwise nucleation, as well as the surface induced nucleation, of large droplets is observed. We elucidate the kinetic process of the formation of a primary nucleus and the rearrangement of every single molecule involved in a primary nucleus. We found that density fluctuation and orientational preordering are coupled together and occur simultaneously in nucleation. Our results show the pathway of orientational symmetry breaking in the crystallization of n-alkane droplets that are heuristic for the deeper understanding of the crystallization in more complex molecules such as polymers.

Scaling of relaxation and excess entropy in plastically deformed amorphous solids

When stressed sufficiently, solid materials yield and deform plastically via reorganization of microscopic constituents. Indeed, it is possible to alter the microstructure of materials by judicious application of stress, an empirical process utilized in practice to enhance the mechanical properties of metals. Understanding the interdependence of plastic flow and microscopic structure in these nonequilibrium states, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we experimentally investigate this relationship, between the relaxation dynamics and microscopic structure of disordered colloidal solids during plastic deformation. We apply oscillatory shear to solid colloidal monolayers and study their particle trajectories as a function of shear rate in the plastic regime. Under these circumstances, the strain rate, the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow, and the sample microscopic structure oscillate together, but with different phases. Interestingly, the experiments reveal that the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow at time t is correlated with the strain rate and sample microscopic structure measured at earlier and later times, respectively. The relaxation rate, in this nonstationary condition, exhibits power-law, shear-thinning behavior and scales exponentially with sample excess entropy. Thus, measurement of sample static structure (excess entropy) provides insight about both strain rate and constituent rearrangement dynamics in the sample at earlier times.

Perspective: Excess-entropy scaling

This article gives an overview of excess-entropy scaling, the 1977 discovery by Rosenfeld that entropy determines properties of liquids like viscosity, diffusion constant, and heat conductivity. We give examples from computer simulations confirming this intriguing connection between dynamics and thermodynamics, counterexamples, and experimental validations. Recent uses in application-related contexts are reviewed, and theories proposed for the origin of excess-entropy scaling are briefly summarized. It is shown that if two thermodynamic state points of a liquid have the same microscopic dynamics, they must have the same excess entropy. In this case, the potential-energy function exhibits a symmetry termed hidden scale invariance, stating that the ordering of the potential energies of configurations is maintained if these are scaled uniformly to a different density. This property leads to the isomorph theory, which provides a general framework for excess-entropy scaling and illuminates, in particular, why this does not apply rigorously and universally. It remains an open question whether all aspects of excess-entropy scaling and related regularities reflect hidden scale invariance in one form or other.

Structural predictor for nonlinear sheared dynamics in simple glass-forming liquids

Glass-forming liquids subjected to sufficiently strong shear universally exhibit striking nonlinear behavior; for example, a power-law decrease of the viscosity with increasing shear rate. This phenomenon has attracted considerable attention over the years from both fundamental and applicational viewpoints. However, the out-of-equilibrium and nonlinear nature of sheared fluids have made theoretical understanding of this phenomenon very challenging and thus slower to progress. We find here that the structural relaxation time as a function of the two-body excess entropy, calculated for the extensional axis of the shear flow, collapses onto the corresponding equilibrium curve for a wide range of pair potentials ranging from harsh repulsive to soft and finite. This two-body excess entropy collapse provides a powerful approach to predicting the dynamics of nonequilibrium liquids from their equilibrium counterparts. Furthermore, the two-body excess entropy scaling suggests that sheared dynamics is controlled purely by the liquid structure captured in the form of the two-body excess entropy along the extensional direction, shedding light on the perplexing mechanism behind shear thinning.

Structural correlations and cooperative dynamics in supercooled liquids

The relationships between diffusivity and the excess, pair and residual multiparticle contributions to the entropy are examined for Lennard-Jones liquids and binary glassformers, in the context of approximate inverse power law mappings of simple liquids. In the dense liquid where diffusivities are controlled by collisions and cage relaxations, Rosenfeld-type excess entropy scaling of diffusivities is found to hold for both crystallizing as well as vitrifying liquids. The crucial differences between the two categories of liquids emerge only when local cooperative effects in the dynamics result in significant caging effects in the time-dependent behaviour of the single-particle mean square displacement. In the case of glassformers, onset of such local cooperativity coincides with onset of deviations from Rosenfeld-type excess entropy scaling of diffusivities and increasing spatiotemporal heterogeneity. In contrast, for two- and three-dimensional liquids with a propensity to crystallise, the onset of local cooperative dynamics is sufficient to trigger crystallization provided that the liquid is sufficiently supercooled that the free energy barrier to nucleation of the solid phase is negligible. The state points corresponding to onset of transient caging effects can be associated with typical values, within reasonable bounds, of the excess, pair, and residual multiparticle entropy as a consequence of the isomorph-invariant character of the excess entropy, diffusivity and related static and dynamic correlation functions.

Roles of bond orientational ordering in glass transition and crystallization

It is widely believed that crystallization in three dimensions is primarily controlled by positional ordering, and not by bond orientational ordering. In other words, bond orientational ordering is usually considered to be merely a consequence of positional ordering and thus has often been ignored. This one-order-parameter (density) description may be reasonable when we consider an equilibrium liquid-solid transition, but may not be enough to describe a metastable state and the kinetics of the transition. Here we propose that bond orientational ordering can play a key role in (i) crystallization, (ii) the ordering to quasi-crystal and (iii) vitrification, which occurs under rather weak frustration against crystallization. In a metastable supercooled state before crystallization, a system generally tends to have bond orientational order at least locally as a result of a constraint of dense packing. For a system interacting with hard-core repulsions, the constraint is intrinsically of geometrical origin and thus the basic physics is the same as nematic ordering of rod-like particles upon densification. Furthermore, positional ordering is easily destroyed even by weak frustration such as polydispersity and anisotropic interactions which favour a symmetry not consistent with that of the equilibrium crystal. Thus we may say that vitrification can be achieved by disturbing and prohibiting long-range positional ordering. Even in such a situation, bond orientational ordering still survives, accompanying its critical-like fluctuations, which are the origin of dynamic heterogeneity for this case. This scenario naturally explains both the absence of positional order and the development of bond orientational order upon cooling in a supercooled state. Although our argument is speculative in nature, we emphasize that this physical picture can coherently explain crystallization, vitrification, quasi-crystallization and their relationship in a natural manner. For a strongly frustrated system, even bond orientational order can be destroyed. Even in such a case there may still appear a structural signature of dense packing, which is linked to slow dynamics.

Excess entropy scaling of dynamic quantities for fluids of dumbbell-shaped particles

We use molecular simulation to study the ability of entropy scaling relationships to describe the kinetic properties of two Lennard-Jones dumbbell models. We begin by examining the excess entropy, the key quantity used to correlate dynamic properties within entropy scaling strategies. We compute the thermodynamic excess entropy as well as contributions to the two-body excess entropy stemming from translational and orientational intermolecular correlations. Our results indicate that the total two-body contribution accounts for more than 70% of the thermodynamic excess entropy at all state conditions explored. For the two dumbbell models studied here, the orientational component of the two-body excess entropy dominates at moderate and high fluid densities. We next investigate the relationships between kinetic properties and various contributions to the excess entropy. Four dynamic properties are considered: translational and rotational diffusivities, a characteristic relaxation time for rotational motion, and a collective relaxation time stemming from analysis of the coherent intermediate-scattering function. We find that the thermodynamic excess entropy provides the best metric for describing kinetic properties. For each of the dynamic properties considered, reduced data collapse onto a common curve when expressed as a function of the thermodynamic excess entropy. The likelihood of a two-body contribution to the excess entropy serving as a reliable scaling variable is linked to the extent to which it correlates with the thermodynamic excess entropy. The total two-body term contributes significantly to the excess entropy, and therefore this quantity generally serves as a suitable scaling variable.
