First-principles calculations on anharmonic vibrational frequencies of polyethylene and polyacetylene in the Gamma approximation

Anharmonic Phonon Dispersion in Polyethylene

The second-order Green's function method for anharmonic crystals has been applied to an infinite, periodic chain of polyethylene taking into account up to quartic force constants. The frequency-independent approximation to the Dyson self-energy gives rise to numerous divergent resonances, which are fortuitous. Instead, solving the Dyson equation self-consistently with a frequency-dependent self-energy resists divergences from resonances or zero-frequency acoustic vibrations. The calculated anharmonic phonon dispersion, which nonetheless displays many true resonances, and anharmonic phonon density of states furnish hitherto unknown details that explain smaller features of observed vibrational spectra.

DFT studies on the structural and vibrational properties of polyenes

Detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the structure and harmonic frequencies of model all-trans and all-cis polyenes were undertaken. For the first time, we report on the convergence of selected B3LYP/6-311++G** and BLYP/6-311++G** calculated structural parameters resulting from a systematic increase in polyene size (chains containing 2 to 14 C = C units). The limiting values of the structural parameters for very long chains were estimated using simple three-parameter empirical formulae. BLYP/6-311++G** calculated ν(C = C) and ν(C-C) frequencies for all-trans and all-cis polyenes containing up to 14 carbon-carbon double bonds were used to estimate these values for very long chains. Correction of raw, unscaled vibrational data was performed by comparing theoretical and experimental wavenumbers for polyenes chains containing 3 to 12 conjugated C = C units with both ends substituted by tert-butyl groups. The corrected ν(C = C) and ν(C-C) wavenumbers for all-trans molecules were used to estimate the presence of 9 - 12 C = C units in all-trans polyene pigment in red coral.

Vibrational Signature of a Single Water Molecule Adsorbed on Pt(111): Toward a Reliable Anharmonic Description

In this study, we present a thorough benchmarking of our direct anharmonic vibrational variation-perturbation approach for adsorbed molecules on surfaces. We then use our method to describe the vibrational structure of a water molecule adsorbed on a Pt(111) surface and compare our results with the available experimental data. By using an explicitly correlated hybrid method to describe the molecule-surface interaction, we improve on the initial periodic PBE/DZP potential energy landscape and obtain vibrational frequencies that are of near-experimental accuracy. We introduce an implementation of anharmonic z-polarized IR intensity calculation and explain the absence of antisymmetric O-H stretch in the experimental data for the adsorbed water molecule, while the symmetric O-H stretch is predicted to be visible.

Towards a scalable and accurate quantum approach for describing vibrations of molecule-metal interfaces

We present a theoretical framework for the computation of anharmonic vibrational frequencies for large systems, with a particular focus on determining adsorbate frequencies from first principles. We give a detailed account of our local implementation of the vibrational self-consistent field approach and its correlation corrections. We show that our approach is both robust, accurate and can be easily deployed on computational grids in order to provide an efficient computational tool. We also present results on the vibrational spectrum of hydrogen fluoride on pyrene, on the thiophene molecule in the gas phase, and on small neutral gold clusters.
