Review of Theoretical and Computational Studies of Bulk and Single Atom Catalysts for H2 S Catalytic Conversion

Catalytic conversion of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) plays a vital role in environmental protection and safety production. In this review, recent theoretical advances for catalytic conversion of H2 S are systemically summarized. Firstly, different mechanisms of catalytic conversion of H2 S are elucidated. Secondly, theoretical studies of catalytic conversion of H2 S on surfaces of metals, metal compounds, and single-atom catalysts (SACs) are systematically reviewed. In the meantime, various strategies which have been adopted to improve the catalytic performance of catalysts in the catalytic conversion of H2 S are also reviewed, mainly including facet morphology control, doped heteroatoms, metal deposition, and defective engineering. Finally, new directions of catalytic conversion of H2 S are proposed and potential strategies to further promote conversion of H2 S are also suggested: including SACs, double atom catalysts (DACs), single cluster catalysts (SCCs), frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), etc. The present comprehensive review can provide an insight for the future development of new catalysts for the catalytic conversion of H2 S.

Adsorption and reaction of H2S on Cu(110) studied using scanning tunneling microscopy

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the adsorption and reaction of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its fragments (SH and S) on Cu(110) are investigated at 5 K. H2S adsorbs molecularly on the surface on top of a Cu atom. With voltage pulses of STM, it is possible to induce sequential dehydrogenation of H2S to SH and S. We found two kinds of adsorption structures of SH. The short-bridge site is the most stable site for SH, while the long-bridge site is the second. Density functional theory calculations show that the S-H axis is inclined from the surface normal for both species. The reaction of H2S with OH and O was directly observed to yield SH and S, respectively, providing a molecular-level insight into catalyst poisoning.

Density functional theory studies of the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide on aluminum doped silicane

First principles total energy calculations have been performed to study the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) adsorption on silicane, an unusual one monolayer of Si(111) surface hydrogenated on both sides. The H2S adsorption may take place in dissociative or non-dissociative forms. Silicane has been considered as: (A) non-doped with a hydrogen vacancy, and doped in two main configurations; (B) with an aluminum replacing a hydrogen atom and (C-n; n = 1, 2, 3) with an aluminum replacing a silicon atom at a lattice site. In addition, three supercells; 4x4, 3x3 and 2x2 have been explored for both non-doped and doped silicane. The non-dissociative adsorption takes place in geometries (A), (C-1), (C-2) and (C-3) while the dissociative in (B). Adsorption energies of the dissociative case are larger than those corresponding to the non-dissociated cases. In the dissociative adsorption, the molecule is fragmented in a HS structure and a H atom which are bonded to the aluminum to form a H-S-Al-H structure. The presence of the doping produces some electronic changes as the periodicity varies. Calculations of the total density of states (DOS) indicate that in most cases the energy gap decreases as the periodicity changes from 4x4 to 2x2. The features of the total DOS are explained in terms of the partial DOS. The reported charge density plots explain quite well the chemisorptions and physisorptions of the molecule on silicane in agreement with adsorption energies.
