Photolysis of solid NH3 and NH3–H2O mixtures at 193 nm

Same-Energy UV Photons and Low-Energy Electrons Activating Methane and Ammonia Frozen in Amorphous Solid Water

UV photons and low-energy electrons play an important role in the evolution of various molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM). Here, we examined the product molecule formation as a result of irradiation of 193 nm photons and 6.4 eV electrons (same energy under identical laboratory conditions) on D₂O|CH₄ + ND₃|D₂O sandwiched films deposited on Ru(0001) substrate at 25 K in ultrahigh vacuum as a model for processes in the ISM. Temperature-programmed desorption spectra performed following the irradiation revealed the signature of hydrazine and formamide product molecules. These molecules were, however, formed exclusively following the photons' irradiation. These results were compared with the products obtained from a D₂O|CH₄|D₂O sample without ammonia, where deuterated formaldehyde was the dominant product, formed also by photons only. Our results indicate that the photon-induced activation of the cofrozen molecules within D₂O occurs via direct (partial) dissociation of the host and embedded molecules, followed by sample annealing. The electron-induced activation occurs through a direct dissociative electron attachment mechanism. The results presented here suggest possible pathways to generate various C-N, C-O, C-C, N-O, and N-H bonds containing molecules in the ISM.

Effect of ammonia on cobalt Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalysts: a surface science approach

Undercoordinated (defect) sites on cobalt surfaces favor NH₃ decomposition and dehydrogenated products adsorb strongly around these defect sites.

Soft X-ray Heterogeneous Radiolysis of Pyridine in the Presence of Hydrated Strontium-Hydroxyhectorite and its Monitoring by Near-Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The heterogeneous radiolysis of organic molecules in clays is a matter of considerable interest in astrochemistry and environmental sciences. However, little is known about the effects of highly ionizing soft X-rays. By combining monochromatized synchrotron source irradiation with in situ Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (in the mbar range), and using the synoptic view encompassing both the gas and condensed phases, we found the water and pyridine pressure conditions under which pyridine is decomposed in the presence of synthetic Sr²⁺-hydroxyhectorite. The formation of a pyridine/water/Sr²⁺ complex, detected from the Sr 3d and N 1s core-level binding energies, likely presents a favorable situation for the radiolytic breaking of the O-H bond of water molecules adsorbed in the clay and the subsequent decomposition of the molecule. However, decomposition stops when the pyridine pressure exceeds a critical value. This observation can be related to a change in the nature of the active radical species with the pyridine loading. This highlights the fact that the destruction of the molecule is not entirely determined by the properties of the host material, but also by the inserted organic species. The physical and chemical causes of the present observations are discussed.

Formation of simple nitrogen hydrides NH and NH2 at cryogenic temperatures through N + NH3→ NH + NH2 reaction: dark cloud chemistry of nitrogen

Although NH3 molecules interacting with ground state nitrogen atoms N((4)S) seem not to be a very reactive system without providing additional energy to initiate the chemical process, we show through this study that, in the solid phase, at very low temperature, NH3 + N((4)S) reaction leads to the formation of the amidogen radical NH2. Such a dissociation reaction previously thought to occur exclusively through UV photon or energetic particle irradiation is in this work readily occurring just by stimulating the mobility of N((4)S)-atoms in the 3-10 K temperature range in the solid sample. The N((4)S)-N((4)S) recombination may be the source of metastable molecular nitrogen N2(A), a reactive species which might trigger the NH3 dissociation or react with ground state nitrogen atoms N((4)S) to form excited nitrogen atoms N((4)P/(2)D) through energy transfer processes. Based on our obtained results, it is possible to propose reaction pathways to explain the NH2 radical formation which is the first step in the activation of stable species such as NH3, a chemical induction process that, in addition to playing an important role in the origin of molecular complexity in interstellar space, is known to require external energy supplies to occur in the gas phase.

Radiation processing of formamide and formamide:water ices on silicate grain analogue

Lyman-α (121.6 nm) photon and 1 keV electron-beam irradiation of pure HCONH2 (FA) ice and H2O:HCONH2 ice mixtures on high-surface-area SiO2 nanoparticles have been investigated with FT-IR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Lyman-α photolysis of pure amorphous FA ice grown at 70 K and crystalline FA ice produced by annealing to 165 K gives spectral signatures between 2120 and 2195 cm(-1) that we assign primarily to OCN(-) and CO. The OCN(-) and CO yields are ∼25% less abundant for crystalline FA ice. Photon and electron processing also produces H2 that is released from the ice between ∼90 and 140 K. A decrease in the H2 TPD peak is seen for irradiated crystalline HCONH2 ice. Lyman-α photolysis of H2O:HCONH2 mixed ices increases OCN(-) and CO production, suggesting a catalytic role of H2O. Also, for pure FA, 1 keV electron irradiation slightly increases the yield of OCN(-), while CO decarboxylation is selectively prevented. CO is also not produced in H2O:HCONH2 ices upon electron irradiation. Dissociative ionization, direct dissociative excitation, and dissociative electron attachment (DEA) channels are accessible in the Lyman-α (121.6 nm) photon and 1 keV electron-beam energy range. DEA energetically favors OCN(-) and H(-) formation, with the latter leading to H2 formation. The FA fragment product identities, yields, and branching ratios are considerably different relative to the gas phase and depend upon the radiation type, ice structure, and the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles. The latter may increase ion-electron recombination and radical recombination rates. The main products observed suggest very different condensed-phase dissociation channels from those reported for gas-phase dissociation. Formation of ions/products from FA is not negligible upon Lyman-α photolysis or electron irradiation, both of which could process ices in interstellar regions as well as in Titan's atmosphere.
