Reactions of U+ with H2, D2, and HD Studied by Guided Ion Beam Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Theory

The kinetic energy-dependent reactions of the atomic actinide uranium cation (U⁺) with H₂, D₂, and HD were examined by guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. An average 0 K bond dissociation energy of D₀(U⁺ - H) = 2.48 ± 0.06 eV is obtained by analysis of the endothermic product ion cross sections. Quantum chemistry calculations were performed for comparison with experimental thermochemistry, including high-level CASSCF-CASPT2-RASSI calculations of the spin-orbit corrections. CCSD(T) and the CASSCF levels show excellent agreement with experiment, whereas B3LYP and PBE0 slightly overestimate and the M06 approach badly underestimates the bond energy for UH⁺. Theory was also used to investigate the electronic structures of the reaction intermediates and potential energy surfaces. The experimental product branching ratio for the reaction of U⁺ with HD indicates that these reactions occur primarily via a direct reaction mechanism, despite the presence of a deep-well for UH₂⁺ formation according to theory. The reactivity and hydride bond energy for U⁺ are compared with those for transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide cations, and periodic trends are discussed. These comparisons suggest that the 5f electrons on uranium are largely core and uninvolved in the reactive chemistry.

Activation of D2 by Neodymium Cation (Nd+): Bond Energy of NdH+ and Mechanistic Insights through Experimental and Theoretical Studies

The kinetic-energy-dependent cross section for the reaction of Nd⁺ with D₂ was studied by using a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer. The formation of NdD⁺ is endothermic, and analysis of the reaction cross section gave an NdH⁺ 0 K bond dissociation energy (BDE) of 1.99 ± 0.06 eV. Theoretical calculations for the NdH⁺ BDE were performed for comparison with the experimental thermochemistry and generally gave accurate results. Additionally, relaxed potential energy surfaces for NdH₂⁺ were performed, and no strongly bound dihydride intermediate was located. The Nd⁺ + D₂ reactivity and BDE of NdH⁺ are compared with analogous results for the lanthanide cations La⁺, Ce⁺, Pr⁺, Sm⁺, Gd⁺, and Lu⁺ to establish periodic trends and insight into the role of the electronic configurations on this reactivity and the lanthanide hydride cation bond strengths.

Near-Thermal Reactions of Au+(1S,3D) and AuX+ with CH3X (X = Br, I): A Combined Experimental and Computational Analysis

Reactions of Au⁺(¹S,³D) and AuX⁺ with CH₃X (X = I and Br) were performed in the gas phase by utilizing a selected-ion drift cell reactor. These experiments were done at room temperature as well as reduced temperature (∼200 K) at a total pressure of 3.5 Torr in helium. Rate coefficients, product sequencing, and branching fractions were obtained for all reactions to evaluate reaction efficiencies and higher-order processes. Reactions of both Au⁺ states proceed with moderate efficiencies as compared to the average dipole orientation model with these neutral substrates. Results from this work revealed that, dependent on the reacting partner, Au⁺(¹S) exhibits, among others, halogen abstraction, HX elimination, and association. By comparison, Au⁺(³D) participates primarily in charge transfer and halogen abstraction. Dependent on the halogen ligand, AuX⁺ ions induce several processes, including association, charge transfer, halogen loss, and halogen substitution. AuI⁺ reacting with CH₃Br resulted in association exclusively, whereas the AuI⁺/CH₃I and AuBr⁺/CH₃Br systems exhibited halogen loss as the dominant process. By contrast, all possible bimolecular pathways occurred in the reaction of AuBr⁺ with CH₃I. Observed products indicate that displacement of bromine by iodine on gold is favored in ionic products, consistent with the thermochemical preference for formation of the Au⁺-I bond. All AuX⁺ reactions proceed at maximum efficiency. Potential energy surfaces calculated at the B3LYP/def2-TZVPP level of theory for the AuX⁺ reactions are in good agreement with the available thermochemistry for these species and with previously calculated structures and energetics. Experimental and computational results are consistent with a mechanism for the AuX⁺/CH₃Y systems where bimolecular products occur either via direct loss of the halogen originally on Au or via a common intermediate resulting from methyl migration in which the Au center is three-coordinate.

Methane Adducts of Gold Dimer Cations: Thermochemistry and Structure from Collision-Induced Dissociation and Association Kinetics

The bond dissociation energies at 0 K (BDE) of Au₂⁺-CH₄ and Au₂CH₄⁺-CH₄ have been determined using two separate experimental methods. Analyses of collision-induced dissociation cross sections for Au₂CH₄⁺ + Xe and Au₂(CH₄)₂⁺ + Xe measured using a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer (GIBMS) yield BDEs of 0.71 ± 0.05 and 0.57 ± 0.07 eV, respectively. Statistical modeling of association kinetics of Au₂(CH₄)_0-2⁺ + CH₄ + He measured from 200 to 400 K and at 0.3-0.9 Torr using a selected-ion flow tube (SIFT) apparatus yields slightly higher values of 0.81 ± 0.21 and 0.75 ± 0.25 eV. The SIFT data also place a lower limit on the BDE of Au₂C₂H₈⁺-CH₄ of 0.35 eV, likely an activated isomer, not Au₂(CH₄)₂⁺-CH₄. Particular emphasis is placed on determining the uncertainty in the derivation from association kinetics measurements, including uncertainties in collisional energy transfer, calculated harmonic frequencies, and possible contribution of isomerization of the association complexes. This evaluation indicates that an uncertainty of ±0.2 eV should be expected and that an uncertainty of better than ±0.1 eV is unlikely to be reasonable.

Cerium Cation (Ce+) Reactions with H2, D2, and HD: CeH+ Bond Energy and Mechanistic Insights from Guided Ion Beam and Theoretical Studies

Reactions of the atomic lanthanide cerium cation (Ce⁺) with H₂, D₂, and HD were studied by using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. Analysis of the kinetic-energy-dependent endothermic reactions to form CeH⁺ (CeD⁺) led to a 0 K bond dissociation energy (BDE) for CeH⁺ of 2.19 ± 0.09 eV. Theoretical calculations for CeH⁺ were performed at the B3LYP, BHLYP, and PBE0 levels of theory and overestimate the experimental BDE. In contrast, extrapolation to the complete basis set limit using coupled-cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, CCSD(T), gave a value (2.33 eV) in reasonable agreement with the experimental BDE. The branching ratio of the CeH⁺ and CeD⁺ products in the HD reaction suggests that the reaction occurs via a statistical mechanism involving a long-lived intermediate. Relaxed potential energy surfaces for CeH₂⁺ were computed and are consistent with the availability of such an intermediate, but the crossing point between quartet and doublet surfaces helps explain the inefficiency of the association reaction observed in the literature. The reactivity and CeH⁺ BDE are compared with previous results for group 4 transition metal cations (Ti⁺, Zr⁺, and Hf⁺), other lanthanides (La⁺, Sm⁺, Gd⁺, and Lu⁺), and the isovalent actinide Th⁺. Periodic trends and insight into the role of the electronic configuration on metal-hydride bond strength are discussed.

Methane activation by heteronuclear diatomic AuRh+ cation: comparison with homonuclear Au2+ and Rh2. Phys Chem Chem Phys 2020;22:6231-6238. [PMID: 32129335 DOI: 10.1039/c9cp05699h]

The ability to activate methane differs appreciably for different transition metals, and it is attractive to find the most suitable metal for the direct conversion of methane to value-added chemicals. Herein, we performed a comparative study on the reactions of CH₄ with Au₂⁺, AuRh⁺ and Rh₂⁺ cations by mass-spectrometry based experiments and DFT-based theoretical analysis. Different reactivity has been found for these cations: Au₂⁺ has the lowest reactivity, and it can activate methane but only produce H-Au₂-CH₃⁺ without H₂ release; Rh₂⁺ has the highest reactivity, and it can produce both carbene-type Rh₂-CH₂⁺ and carbyne-type H-Rh₂-CH⁺ with H₂ release; AuRh⁺ also has high reactivity to produce only AuRh-CH₂⁺ with H₂, avoiding the excessive dehydrogenation of CH₄. Our theoretical results demonstrate that Rh is responsible for the high reactivity, while Au leads to selectivity, which may be caused by the unique intrinsic bonding properties of the metals.

Au2+ cannot catalyze conversion of methane to ethene at low temperature

The previously reported conversion of methane to ethene catalyzed by Au₂⁺ at thermal energies is investigated through a combination of experiment and theory. The conversion is found not to occur, in-line with well-established thermodynamics.

Samarium cation (Sm+) reactions with H2, D2, and HD: SmH+ bond energy and mechanistic insights from guided ion beam and theoretical studies

Guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry is used to study the reaction of the lanthanide samarium cation (Sm⁺) with H₂ and its isotopologues (HD and D₂) as a function of collision energy. Modeling the resulting energy dependent product ion cross sections from these endothermic reactions yields 2.03 ± 0.06 eV (two standard deviations) for the 0 K bond dissociation energy of SmH⁺. Quantum chemical calculations are performed to determine stabilities of the ground and low-energy states of SmH⁺ for comparison with the experimentally measured thermochemistry. The calculations generally overestimate the SmH⁺ bond energy, but a better agreement between experiment and theory is achieved after correcting for spin-orbit energy contributions, with coupled-cluster with single, double and perturbative triple excitations/complete basis set [CCSD(T)/CBS] results reproducing the experiment well. In the HD reaction, the SmH⁺ product is observed to be favored over the SmD⁺ by about a factor of three, indicating that the reaction proceeds via a direct mechanism with short-lived intermediates. This is consistent with quantum chemical calculations of relaxed potential energy surface scans of SmH₂ ⁺, which show that there is no strongly bound dihydride intermediate. The reactivity and hydride bond energy of Sm⁺, which has a valence electron configuration typical of most lanthanides, are compared with previous results for the lanthanide cations La⁺, Gd⁺, and Lu⁺, which exhibit configurations more closely related to the group 3 metal cations, Sc⁺ and Y⁺. Periodic trends across the lanthanide series and insights into the role of the electronic configurations on hydride bond strength and reactivity with H₂ are discussed.

Global diabatic potential energy surfaces for the BeH2 + system and dynamics studies on the Be+(2P) + H2(X1Σg +) → BeH+(X1Σ+) + H(2S) reaction

The Be+(2P) + H2(X1Σg +) → BeH+(X1Σ+) + H(2S) reaction has great significance for studying diabatic processes and ultracold chemistry. The first global diabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) which are correlated with the lowest two adiabatic states 12A' and 22A' of the BeH2 + system are constructed by using the neural network method. Ab initio energy points are calculated using the multi-reference configuration interaction method with the Davidson correction and AVQZ basis set. The diabatic energies are obtained from the transformation of ab initio data based on the dipole moment operators. The topographical characteristics of the diabatic PESs are described in detail, and the positions of crossing between the V d 11 and V d 22 are pinpointed. On new diabatic PESs, the time-dependent quantum wave packet method is carried out to study the mechanism of the title reaction. The results of dynamics calculations indicate the reaction has no threshold and the product BeH+ is excited to high vibrational states easily. In addition, the product BeH+ tends to backward scattering at most collision energies.

Activation of H2 by Gadolinium Cation (Gd+): Bond Energy of GdH+ and Mechanistic Insights from Guided Ion Beam and Theoretical Studies

The energy-dependent reactions of the lanthanide gadolinium cation (Gd⁺) with H₂, D₂, and HD are investigated using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. From analysis of the resulting endothermic product ion cross sections, the 0 K bond dissociation energy for GdH⁺ is measured to be 2.18 ± 0.07 eV. Theoretical calculations on GdH⁺ are performed for comparison with the experimental thermochemistry and generally appear to overestimate the experimental GdH⁺ bond dissociation energy. Methane Activation by 5 d Transition Metals: Energetics, Mechanisms, and Periodic Trends

Although it has been known for almost three decades that several 5d transition-metal cations will activate methane at room temperature, a more detailed examination of these reactions across the periodic table has only recently been completed. In this Minireview, we compare and contrast studies of the kinetic energy dependence of these reactions as studied using guided-ion-beam tandem mass spectrometry. Thermochemistry for the various products observed (MH⁺ , MH₂⁺ , MC⁺ , MCH⁺ , MCH₂⁺ , and MCH₃⁺ ) are collected and periodic trends evaluated and discussed. The mechanisms for the reactions as elucidated by synergistic quantum chemical calculations are also reviewed. Recent spectroscopic evidence for the structures of the MCH₂⁺ dehydrogenation products are discussed as well.

Ab Initio Characterization of the Electrostatic Complexes Formed by H2 Molecule and Cr(+), Mn(+), Cu(+), and Zn(+) Cations

Equilibrium structures, dissociation energies, and rovibrational energy levels of the electrostatic complexes formed by molecular hydrogen and first-row S-state transition metal cations Cr(+), Mn(+), Cu(+), and Zn(+) are investigated ab initio. Extensive testing of the CCSD(T)-based approaches for equilibrium structures provides an optimal scheme for the potential energy surface calculations. These surfaces are calculated in two dimensions by keeping the H-H internuclear distance fixed at its equilibrium value in the complex. Subsequent variational calculations of the rovibrational energy levels permits direct comparison with data obtained from equilibrium thermochemical and spectroscopic measurements. Overall accuracy within 2-3% is achieved. Theoretical results are used to examine trends in hydrogen activation, vibrational anharmonicity, and rotational structure along the sequence of four electrostatic complexes covering the range from a relatively floppy van der Waals system (Mn(+)···H2) to an almost a rigid molecular ion (Cu(+)···H2).

A comparative study of the Au + H₂, Au⁺ + H₂, and Au⁻ + H₂ systems: Potential energy surfaces and dynamics of reactive collisions

In order to study the Au(-) + H2 collision, a new global potential energy surface (PES) describing the ground electronic state of AuH2(-) system is developed and compared with the PESs of the neutral [Zanchet et al., J. Chem. Phys. 132, 034301 (2010)] and cationic systems [Anaís et al., J. Chem. Phys. 135, 091102 (2011)]. We found that Au(-) - H2 presents a H-Au-H insertion minimum attributed to the stabilization of the LUMO 3b2 orbital, which can be considered as the preamble of the chemisorption well appearing in larger gold clusters. While the LUMO orbital is stabilized, the HOMO 6a1 is destabilized, creating a barrier at the geometry where the energy orbitals' curves are crossing. In the anion, this HOMO is doubly occupied, while in the neutral system is half-filled and completely empty in the cation, explaining the gradual disappearance of the well and the barrier as the number of electrons decreases. The cation presents a well in the entrance channel partially explained by electrostatic interactions. The three systems' reactions are highly endothermic, by 1.66, 2.79, and 3.23 eV for AuH, AuH(+), and AuH(-) products, respectively. The reaction dynamics is studied using quasi-classical trajectory method for the three systems. The one corresponding to the anionic system is new in this work. Collision energies between 1.00 and 8.00 eV, measured for the cation, are in good agreement with the simulated cross section for the AuH(+). It was also found that the total fragmentation, in three atoms, competes becoming dominant at sufficiently high energy. Here, we study the competition between the two different reaction pathways for the anionic, cationic, and neutral species, explaining the differences using a simple model based on the topology of the potential energy surfaces.
