Abstract
High-pressure electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to measure translational diffusion coefficients (Dtr) of a TEMPONE spin probe in poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) and swollen in supercritical CO2. Dtr was measured on two scales: macroscopic scale (>1 μm), by measuring spin probe uptake by the sample; and microscopic scale (<10 nm), by using concentration-dependent spectrum broadening. Both methods yield similar translational diffusion coefficients (in the range 5-10 × 10-12 m2/s at 40-60 °C and 8-10 MPa). Swollen PDLLA was found to be homogeneous on the nanometer scale, although the TEMPONE spin probe in the polymer exhibited higher rotational mobility (τcorr = 6 × 10-11 s) than expected, based on its Dtr. To measure distribution coefficients of the solute between the swollen polymer and the supercritical medium, supercritical chromatography with sampling directly from the high-pressure vessel was used. A distinct difference between powder and bulk polymer samples was only observed at the start of the impregnation process.

Abstract
The rotational and translational diffusion of negatively charged and uncharged spin probes in five imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, emimBF4, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, bmimBF4, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, omimBF4, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, omimPF6, and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, omimCl, has been studied by means of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Detailed analyses of the spin-Hamiltonian parameters and spin exchange interactions have been carried out. The temperature dependences of the line broadening induced by the electronic dipole-dipole interaction and the electron spin exchange coupling are determined. The translational mobility of spin probes is semiquantitatively characterized and successfully explained in the framework of a hypothesis based on the assumption of polar and unpolar domains within the RTILs.

Abstract
We report on the rotational diffusion dynamics and fluorescence lifetime of lissamine rhodamine B sulfonyl chloride (LRSC) in two thin-film experimental configurations. These are liquid|solid interfaces, where N-octyl-2-pyrrolidone (NOP) containing water and ethylene glycol (EG) thin films are each supported on glass, and a liquid|liquid|solid interface where thin films of water and NOP, both supported on glass, are in contact with one another, forming an NOP|water interface. The reorientation dynamics and fluorescence lifetime of LRSC are measured as a function of distance from the NOP|glass and EG|glass interfaces and from the NOP|water and NOP|glass interfaces in the liquid|liquid|solid experimental configuration. Fluorescence anisotropy decay data from the liquid|solid systems reveal a liquid film depth-dependent gradient spanning tens of micrometers from the NOP|glass interface into the wet NOP phase, while this gradient is absent in EG. We interpret these findings in the context of a compositional gradient in the NOP phase. The spatially resolved fluorescence lifetime and anisotropy decay data for an NOP|water|glass interfacial structure exhibits the absence of a gradient in the anisotropy decay profile normal to the NOP|water interface and the presence of a fluorescence lifetime gradient as a function of distance from the NOP|water interface. The compositional heterogeneity for both interfacial systems is in the form of water nanodroplets in the NOP phase. We understand this compositional gradient in the context of the relative surface energies of the water, NOP, and glass components.

Abstract
Picosecond rotational correlation times of perdeuterated tempone (PDT) are found in alkane and aromatic liquids by directly using the spectral width of the central electron paramagnetic resonance line. This is done by mathematically eliminating the nonsecular spectral density from the spectral parameter equations, thereby removing the need to assume a particular form for it. This is preferable to fitting a constant correction factor to the spectral density, because such a factor does not fit well in the low picosecond range. The electron-nuclear spin dipolar interaction between the probe and solvent is shown to be negligible for the very rapid rotation of PDT in these liquids at the temperatures of the study. The rotational correlation times obtained with the proposed method generally agree to within experimental uncertainty with those determined by using the traditional parameters. Using the middle line width offers greater precision and smoother trends. Previous work with the central line width is discussed, and past discrepancies are explained as possibly resulting from residual inhomogeneous broadening. The rotational correlation time almost forms a common curve across all of the solvents when plotted with respect to isothermal compressibility, which shows the high dependence of rotation on liquid free volume.
