Electrical and ionic conductivity effects on magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance parameters of CuI

Active Sites in H-Mordenite Catalysts Probed by NMR and FTIR

Mordenites are widely used in catalysis and environmental protection. The catalytic properties of mordenite are largely determined by the composition of its crystal framework, i.e., the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio (MR), and the cationic form. In H-mordenites, the most important characteristic becomes the structure and distribution of acid sites, which depends on the number and distribution of Al tetrahedra in the framework. In the present work, the local structure of these centers in H-mordenite catalysts with a nominal MR varied from 9.9 to 19.8 was studied in detail using a combination of magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). 27Al MAS NMR indicates the presence of extra-framework Al in most of the studied samples that results in a higher real MR of the zeolitic framework compared to the nominal value. Concentrations of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, as well as of silanol groups were estimated by elemental analysis, NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. The values of site concentrations obtained from band intensities of adsorbed CO and those of OH groups are compared with the amount of framework and extra-framework aluminum. The advantages and restrictions of different methods of active site characterization are discussed.

MAS-NMR of [Pyr13][Tf2N] and [Pyr16][Tf2N] Ionic Liquids Confined to Carbon Black: Insights and Pitfalls

Electrolytes based on ionic liquids (IL) are promising candidates to replace traditional liquid electrolytes in electrochemical systems, particularly in combination with carbon-based porous electrodes. Insight into the dynamics of such systems is imperative for tailoring electrochemical performance. In this work, 1-Methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and 1-Hexyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide were studied in a carbon black (CB) host using spectrally resolved Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) and 13-interval Pulsed Field Gradient Stimulated Echo (PFGSTE) Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS-NMR). Data were processed using a sensitivity weighted Laplace inversion algorithm without non-negativity constraint. Previously found relations between the alkyl length and the aggregation behavior of pyrrolidinium-based cations were confirmed and characterized in more detail. For the IL in CB, a different aggregation behavior was found compared to the neat IL, adding the surface of a porous electrode as an additional parameter for the optimization of IL-based electrolytes. Finally, the suitability of MAS was assessed and critically discussed for investigations of this class of samples.

Finding the true spin-lattice relaxation time for half-integral nuclei with non-zero quadrupole couplings

Measuring true spin-lattice relaxation times T(1) of half-integral quadrupolar nuclei having non-zero nuclear quadrupole coupling constants (NQCCs) presents challenges due to the presence of satellite-transitions (STs) that may lie outside the excitation bandwidth of the central transition (CT). This leads to complications in establishing well-defined initial conditions for the population differences in these multi-level systems. In addition, experiments involving magic-angle spinning (MAS) can introduce spin exchange due to zero-crossings of the ST and CT (or possibly rotational resonance recoupling in the case of multiple sites) and greatly altered initial conditions as well. An extensive comparison of pulse sequences that have been previously used to measure T(1) in such systems is reported, using the (71)Ga (I=3/2) NMR of a Ge-doped h-GaN n-type semiconductor sample as the test case. The T(1) values were measured at the peak maximum of the Knight shift distribution. Analytical expressions for magnetization-recovery of the CT appropriate to the pulse sequences tested were used, involving contributions from both a magnetic relaxation mechanism (rate constant W) and a quadrupolar one (rate constants W(1) and W(2), approximately equal in this case). An asynchronous train of high-power saturating pulses under MAS that is able to completely saturate both CT and STs is found to be the most reliable and accurate method for obtaining the "true T(1)", defined here as (2W+2W1,2)(-)(1). All other methods studied yielded poor agreement with this "true T(1)" value or even resulted in gross errors, for reasons that are analyzed in detail. These methods involved a synchronous train of saturating pulses under MAS, an inversion-recovery sequence under MAS or static conditions, and a saturating comb of pulses on a static sample. Although the present results were obtained on a sample where the magnetic relaxation mechanism dominated the quadrupolar one, the asynchronous saturating pulse train approach is not limited to this situation. The extent to which W(1) and W(2) are unequal does affect the interpretability of the experiment however, particularly when the quadrupolar mechanism dominates. A numerically approximate solution for the I=3/2 recovery case reveals the quantitative effects of any such inequality.

A spinning thermometer to monitor microwave heating and glass transitions in dynamic nuclear polarization

As previously demonstrated by Thurber and Tycko, the peak position of (79)Br in potassium bromide (KBr) allows one to determine the temperature of a spinning sample. We propose to adapt the original design by using a compact KBr tablet placed at the bottom of the magic angle spinning rotor, separated from the sample under investigation by a thin disk made of polytetrafluoroethylene (or 'Teflon'®). This design allows spinning the sample up to at least 16 kHz. The KBr tablet can remain in the rotor when changing the sample under investigation. Calibration in the range of 98 < T < 320 K has been carried out in a static rotor by inserting a platinum thermometer. The accuracy is better than ± 0.9 K, even in the presence of microwave irradiation. Irradiation with 5 W microwaves at 263 GHz leads to a small temperature increase of 3.6 ± 1.4 K in either static or spinning samples. The dynamic nuclear polarization enhancement decreases with increasing temperature, in particular when a frozen glassy sample undergoes a glass transition.
