Unraveling the properties of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane under nanoscale confinement: Atomistic view of the liquidlike state from molecular dynamics simulation

Combining Molecular Dynamics and Machine Learning to Analyze Shear Thinning for Alkane and Globular Lubricants in the Low Shear Regime

Lubricants with desirable frictional properties are important in achieving an energy-saving society. Lubricants at the interfaces of mechanical components are confined under high shear rates and pressures and behave quite differently from the bulk material. Computational approaches such as nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations have been performed to probe the molecular behavior of lubricants. However, the low-shear-velocity regions of the materials have rarely been simulated owing to the expensive calculations necessary to do so, and the molecular dynamics under shear velocities comparable with that in the experiments are not clearly understood. In this study, we performed NEMD simulations of extremely confined lubricants, i.e., two molecular layers for four types of lubricants confined in mica walls, under shear velocities from 0.001 to 1 m/s. While we confirmed shear thinning, the velocity profiles could not show the flow behavior when the shear velocity was much slower than thermal fluctuations. Therefore, we used an unsupervised machine learning approach to detect molecular movements that contribute to shear thinning. First, we extracted the simple features of molecular movements from large amounts of MD data, which were found to correlate with the effective viscosity. Subsequently, the extracted features were interpreted by examining the trajectories contributing to these features. The magnitude of diffusion corresponded to the viscosity, and the location of slips that varied depending on the spherical and chain lubricants was irrelevant. Finally, we attempted to apply a modified Stokes-Einstein relation at equilibrium to the nonequilibrium and confined systems. While systems with low shear rates obeyed the relation sufficiently, large deviations were observed under large shear rates.

Correlation between ordering and shear thinning in confined OMCTS liquids

Despite the extensive research that has been conducted for decades on the behavior of confined liquids, detailed knowledge of this phenomenon, particularly in the mixed/boundary lubrication regime, remains limited. This can be attributed to several factors including the difficulty of direct experimental observations of the behavior of lubricant molecules under non-equilibrium conditions, the high computational cost of molecular simulations to reach steady state, and the low signal-to-noise ratio at extremely low shear rates corresponding to actual operating conditions. To this end, we studied the correlation between the structure formation and shear viscosity of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane confined between two mica surfaces in a mixed/boundary lubrication regime. Three different surface separations corresponding to two-, three-, and five-layered structures were considered to analyze the effect of confinement. The orientational distributions with one specific peak for n=2 and two distributions, including a parallel orientation with the surface normal for n>2, were observed at rest. The confined liquids exhibited a distinct shear-thinning behavior independent of surface separations for a relatively low shear rate, \dot{\gamma}<10^{8} s^{-1}. However, the shear viscosities at \dot{\gamma}<10^{8} s^{-1} depended on the number of layered structures. Newtonian behavior was observed with a further increase in the shear rate. Furthermore, we found a strong correlation between the degree of molecular orientation and the shear viscosity of the confined liquids. The magnitude of the shear viscosity of the confined liquids can primarily be determined by the degree of molecular orientation, and shear-thinning originates from the vanishing of specific orientational distributions with increasing shear rate.

Cross-Plane and In-Plane Heat Conductions in Layer-by-Layer Membrane: Molecular Dynamics Study

A material with anisotropic heat conduction characteristics, which is determined by molecular scale structure, provides a way of controlling heat flow in nanoscale spaces. As such, here, we consider layer-by-layer (LbL) membranes, which are an electrostatic assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers and are expected to have different heat conduction characteristics between cross-plane and in-plane directions. We constructed models of a poly(acrylic acid)/polyethylenimine (PAA/PEI) LbL membrane sandwiched by charged solid walls and investigated their anisotropic heat conduction using molecular dynamics simulations. In the cross-plane direction, the thermal boundary resistance between the solid wall and the LbL membrane and that between the constituent PAA and PEI layers decrease with increasing degree of ionization (solid surface charge density and the number of electric charges per PAA/PEI molecule). When the degree of ionization is low, the cross-plane thermal conductivity of a constituent layer is higher than that of the bulk state. As the degree of ionization increases, however, the cross-plane thermal conductivity of PAA, a linear polymer, decreases because of the increase in the number of in-plane oriented polymer chains. In the in-plane direction, we investigated the heat conduction of each layer and found the enhancement of effective in-plane thermal conductivity again due to the in-plane oriented chain alignment. The heat conduction in the LbL membrane is three-dimensionally enhanced compared to those in the bulk states of the constituent polymers because of the electrostatic interactions in the cross-plane direction and the molecular alignment in the in-plane direction.

Structure and Dynamics of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane Confined between Mica Surfaces

Using a molecular model for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS), molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to probe the phase state of OMCTS confined between two mica surfaces in equilibrium with a reservoir. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for elevations ranging from 5 to 35 K above the melting point for the OMCTS model used in this study. The Helmholtz free energy is computed for a specific confinement using the two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) method. Analysis of the in-plane pair correlation functions did not reveal signatures of freezing even under an extreme confinement of two layers. OMCTS is found to orient with a wide distribution of orientations with respect to the mica surface, with a distinct preference for the surface parallel configuration in the contact layers. The self-intermediate scattering function is found to decay with increasing relaxation times as the surface separation is decreased, and the two-step relaxation in the scattering function, a signature of glassy dynamics, distinctly evolves as the temperature is lowered. However, even at 5 K above the melting point, we did not observe a freezing transition and the self-intermediate scattering functions relax within 200 ps for the seven-layered confined system. The self-diffusivity and relaxation times obtained from the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts stretched exponential fits to the late α-relaxation exhibit power law scalings with the packing fraction as predicted by mode coupling theory. A distinct discontinuity in the Helmholtz free energy, potential energy, and a sharp change in the local bond order parameter, Q4, was observed at 230 K for a five-layered system upon cooling, indicative of a first-order transition. A freezing point depression of about 30 K was observed for this five-layered confined system, and at the lower temperatures, contact layers were found to be disordered with long-range order present only in the inner layers. These dynamical signatures indicate that confined OMCTS undergoes a slowdown akin to a fluid approaching a glass transition upon increasing confinement, and freezing under confinement would require substantial subcooling below the bulk melting point of OMCTS.

Mechanism of diffusion slowdown in confined liquids

With the aid of molecular dynamics simulation, we consider why the diffusivity of liquid becomes slower as the liquid is confined to a narrower space. The diffusion coefficient of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane liquid confined between two mica surfaces was calculated for a range of surface separations from 64 to 23 Å. The resulting separation dependence of the diffusion coefficient can be explained by considering that the molecular diffusion is an activated process. In particular, we find that the increase in the activation energy is closely correlated with the decrease of the potential energy per molecule, from which we propose a molecular-level mechanism of this confined-induced diffusion slowdown.

Stick-slip friction and energy dissipation in boundary lubrication

Shearing of a simple nonpolar film, right after the liquid-to-solid phase transition under nanometer confinement, is studied by using a liquid-vapor molecular dynamics simulation method. We find that, in contrast with the shear melting and recrystallization behavior of the solidlike phase during the stick-slip motion, interlayer slips within the film and wall slips at the wall-film interface are often observed. The ordered solidified film is well maintained during the slip. Through the time variations of the frictional force and potential energy change within the film, we find that both the friction dissipation during the slip and the potential energy decay after the slip in the solidified film take a fairly large portion of the total energy dissipation.
