Flickering dipoles in the gas phase: Structures, internal dynamics, and dipole moments of β-naphthol-H2O in its ground and excited electronic states

Dipole Moments and Transition Dipole Moments Calculated by Pair-Density Functional Theory with State Interaction

We develop response-function algorithms for dipole moments and transition dipole moments for compressed multistate pair-density functional theory (CMS-PDFT). We use the method of undetermined Lagrange multipliers to derive analytical expressions and validate them using numerical differentiation. We test the accuracy of the magnitudes of predicted ground-state and excited-state dipole moments, the orientations of these dipole moments, and the orientation of transition dipole moments by comparison to experimental data. We show that CMS-PDFT has good accuracy for these quantities, and we also show that, unlike methods that neglect state interaction, CMS-PDFT yields correct behavior for the dipole moment curves in the vicinity of conical intersections. This work, therefore, opens the door to molecular dynamic simulations in strong electric fields, and we envision that CMS-PDFT can now be used to discover chemical reactions that can be controlled by an oriented external electric field upon photoexcitation of the reactants.

Interleaved electro-optic dual comb generation to expand bandwidth and scan rate for molecular spectroscopy and dynamics studies near 1.6 µm

A chirped-pulse interleaving method is reported for generation of dual optical frequency combs based on electro-optic phase modulators (EOM) in a free-running all-fiber based system. Methods are discussed to easily modify the linear scan rate and comb resolution by more than three orders of magnitude and to significantly increase the spectral bandwidth coverage. The agility of the technique is shown to both capture complex line shapes and to magnify rapid passage effects in spectroscopic and molecular dynamics studies of CO₂. These methods are well-suited for applications in the areas of remote sensing of greenhouse gas emissions, molecular reaction dynamics, and sub-Doppler studies across the wide spectral regions accessible to EOMs.

Microhydration of 2-Naphthol at Ground, First Excited Triplet, and First Excited Singlet States: A Case Study on Photo Acids

Molecular interactions of 2-naphthol (nap) with water molecules are studied at the ground, first excited triplet and first excited singlet states, applying DFT and TD-DFT methods. The minimum energy structure of hydrated clusters of 2-naphthol up to four water molecules are selected from several possible input geometries. It is observed that the minimum energy conformer of the tetra-hydrate of 2-naphthol has proton transfer occurring from nap to solvent water molecules, in its first excited singlet state. This is however not observed in case of its ground or first excited triplet state. It is consistent with the fact that the pK_a of nap in the first excited singlet state is very much lower compared to the ground and first excited triplet state. This is also reflected in the O-H potential energy profile of tetrahydrate of nap, obtained by performing a rigid potential energy scan of the dissociating O-H bond of nap at ground, first excited triplet and first excited singlet states. Frequency of O-H stretching vibration of 2-napthol and its hydrated clusters in the ground (S₀) as well as in the first excited singlet (S₁) state are calculated and compared with the available experimental data. The performance of macroscopic solvation model is also examined in the ground and these excited states.

Experimentally measured permanent dipoles induced by hydrogen bonding. The Stark spectrum of indole-NH3

Hydrogen bond pairs involving the chromophore indole have been extensively studied in the gas phase. Here, we report high resolution electronic spectroscopy experiments on the indole-NH(3) hydrogen bond pair in the absence and presence of an electric field. The S(1)-S(0) origin band of this complex recorded in zero field at high resolution reveals two overlapping spectra; a consequence of NH(3) hindered internal rotation. The barrier to internal rotation is predicted by theory to be less than 20 cm(-1) in the ground state, therefore requiring a non-rigid rotor Hamiltonian to interpret the spectra. Conducting the experiment in the presence of an applied electric field further perturbs the already congested spectrum of the complex, but makes possible the measurement of the permanent electric dipole moments in its S(0) and S(1) states. These values reveal significant changes in electron distribution that arise from hydrogen bonding effects.
