Ultra-broadband infrared pump-probe spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation and a tuneable pump

Ultrafast carrier dynamics in Ge by ultra-broadband mid-infrared probe spectroscopy

In this study, we carried out 800-nm pump and ultra-broadband mid-infrared (MIR) probe spectroscopy with high time-resolution (70 fs) in bulk Ge. By fitting the time-resolved difference reflection spectra [ΔR(ω)/R(ω)] with the Drude model in the 200–5000 cm⁻¹ region, the time-dependent plasma frequency and scattering rate have been obtained. Through the calculation, we can further get the time-dependent photoexcited carrier concentration and carrier mobility. The Auger recombination essentially dominates the fast relaxation of photoexcited carriers within 100 ps followed by slow relaxation due to diffusion. Additionally, a novel oscillation feature is clearly found in time-resolved difference reflection spectra around 2000 cm⁻¹ especially for high pump fluence, which is the Lorentz oscillation lasting for about 20 ps due to the Coulomb force exerted just after the excitation.

Implementation of EPICS based vacuum control system for variable energy cyclotron centre, Kolkata

The vacuum system of the Room Temperature (K = 130) Cyclotron of Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre is comprised of vacuum systems of main machine and Beam Transport System. The vacuum control system is upgraded to a PLC based Automated system from the initial relay based Manual system. The supervisory control of the vacuum system is implemented in Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). An EPICS embedded ARM based vacuum gauge controller is developed to mitigate the requirement of vendor specific gauge controller for gauges and also for seamless integration of the gauge controllers with the control system. A set of MS-Windows ActiveX components with embedded EPICS Channel Access interface are developed to build operator interfaces with less complex programming and to incorporate typical Windows feature, e.g., user authentication, file handling, better fonts, colors, mouse actions etc. into the operator interfaces. The control parameters, monitoring parameters, and system interlocks of the system are archived in MySQL based EPICS MySQL Archiver developed indigenously. In this paper, we describe the architecture, the implementation details, and the performance of the system.

Dye-injected electron trapping in TiO2 determined by broadband transient infrared spectroscopy

We report the dynamics of electrons injected into TiO₂ due to the excitation of Ru-N719 dye at 532 nm.

Polarization sensitive ultrafast mid-IR pump probe micro-spectrometer with diffraction limited spatial resolution

A setup of ultrafast transient infrared IR spectrometer is described in this paper that employed Schwarzschild objectives to focus the probe beam to a diffraction limited spot. Thus measurements were performed with very high spatial resolution in the mid-IR spectral region. Furthermore, modulating the polarization of the probe light enabled detecting transient dichroism of the sample. These capabilities of the setup were applied to study transient absorption of Photosystem II core complex and to image an organized film of methylene blue chloride dye. Moreover, a study of noise sources in a pump probe measurement is presented. The predicted noise level of the current setup was 8.25 μOD in 10(4) acquisitions and compared very well with the experimental observation of 9.6 μOD.

A framework for far-field infrared absorption microscopy beyond the diffraction limit

A framework is proposed for infrared (IR) absorption microscopy in the far-field with a spatial resolution below the diffraction limit. The sub-diffraction resolution is achieved by pumping a transient contrast in the population of a selected vibrational mode with IR pulses that exhibit alternating central minima and maxima, and by probing the corresponding absorbance at the same wavelength with adequately delayed Gaussian pulses. Simulations have been carried out on the basis of empirical parameters emulating patterned thin films of octadecyltrichlorosilane and a resolution of 250 nm was found when probing the CH₂ stretches at 3.5 μm with pump energies less than ten times the vibrational saturation threshold.

Direct-gap gain and optical absorption in germanium correlated to the density of photoexcited carriers, doping, and strain

Direct-gap gain up to 850 cm(-1) at 0.74 eV is measured and modeled in optically pumped Ge-on-Si layers for photoexcited carrier densities of 2.0 × 10(20) cm(-3). The gain spectra are correlated to carrier density via plasma-frequency determinations from reflection spectra. Despite significant gain, optical amplification cannot take place, because the carriers also generate pump-induced absorption of ≈7000 cm(-1). Parallel studies of III-V direct-gap InGaAs layers validate our spectroscopy and modeling. Our self-consistent results contradict current explanations of lasing in Ge-on-Si cavities.

Assessing noise sources at synchrotron infrared ports

Today, the vast majority of electron storage rings delivering synchrotron radiation for general user operation offer a dedicated infrared port. There is growing interest expressed by various scientific communities to exploit the mid-IR emission in microspectroscopy, as well as the far infrared (also called THz) range for spectroscopy. Compared with a thermal (laboratory-based source), IR synchrotron radiation sources offer enhanced brilliance of about two to three orders of magnitude in the mid-IR energy range, and enhanced flux and brilliance in the far-IR energy range. Synchrotron radiation also has a unique combination of a broad wavelength band together with a well defined time structure. Thermal sources (globar, mercury filament) have excellent stability. Because the sampling rate of a typical IR Fourier-transform spectroscopy experiment is in the kHz range (depending on the bandwidth of the detector), instabilities of various origins present in synchrotron radiation sources play a crucial role. Noise recordings at two different IR ports located at the Swiss Light Source and SOLEIL (France), under conditions relevant to real experiments, are discussed. The lowest electron beam fluctuations detectable in IR spectra have been quantified and are shown to be much smaller than what is routinely recorded by beam-position monitors.
