Unveiling the nonadiabatic rotational excitation process in a symmetric-top molecule induced by two intense laser pulses

Torsional Wave-Packet Dynamics in 2-Fluorobiphenyl Investigated by State-Selective Ionization-Detected Impulsive Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

We report the creation and observation of vibrational wave packets pertinent to torsional motion in a biphenyl derivative in its electronic ground-state manifold. Adiabatically cooled molecular samples of 2-fluorobiphenyl were irradiated by intense nonresonant ultrashort laser pulses to drive impulsive stimulated Raman excitation of torsional motion. Spectral change due to the nonadiabatic vibrational excitation is probed in a state-selective manner using resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization through the S₁ ← S₀ electronic transition. The coherent nature of the excitation was exemplified by adopting irradiation with a pair of pump pulses: observed signals for excited torsional levels exhibit oscillatory variations against the mutual delay between the pump pulses due to wave-packet interference. By taking the Fourier transform of the time course of the signals, energy intervals among torsional levels with v = 0-3 were determined and utilized to calibrate a density functional theory (DFT)-calculated torsional potential-energy function. Time variation of populations in the excited torsional levels was assessed experimentally by measuring integrated intensities of the corresponding transitions while scanning the delay. Early time enhancement of the population (up to ∼2 ps) and gradual degradation of coherence (within ∼20 ps) appears. To explain the observed distinctive features, we developed a four-dimensional (4D) dynamical calculation in which one-dimensional (1D) quantum-mechanical propagation of the torsional motion was followed by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, whereas three-dimensional (3D) molecular rotation was tracked by classical trajectory calculations. This hybrid approach enabled us to reproduce experimental results at a reasonable computational cost and provided a deeper insight into rotational effects on vibrational wave-packet dynamics.

Achieving high molecular alignment and orientation for CH[Formula: see text]F through manipulation of rotational states with varying optical and THz laser pulse parameters

Increasing interest in the fields of high-harmonics generation, laser-induced chemical reactions, and molecular imaging of gaseous targets demands high molecular "alignment" and "orientation" (A&O). In this work, we examine the critical role of different pulse parameters on the field-free A&O dynamics of the CH[Formula: see text]F molecule, and identify experimentally feasible optical and THz range laser parameters that ensure maximal A&O for such molecules. Herein, apart from rotational temperature, we investigate effects of varying pulse parameters such as, pulse duration, intensity, frequency, and carrier envelop phase (CEP). By analyzing the interplay between laser pulse parameters and the resulting rotational population distribution, the origin of specific A&O dynamics was addressed. We could identify two qualitatively different A&O behaviors and revealed their connection with the pulse parameters and the population of excited rotational states. We report here the highest alignment of [Formula: see text] and orientation of [Formula: see text] for CH[Formula: see text]F molecule at 2 K using a single pulse. Our study should be useful to understand different aspects of laser-induced unidirectional rotation in heteronuclear molecules, and in understanding routes to tune/enhance A&O in laboratory conditions for advanced applications.

Orientation and Alignment dynamics of polar molecule driven by shaped laser pulses

We review the theoretical status of intense laser induced orientation and alignment-a field of study which lies at the interface of intense laser physics and chemical dynamics and having potential applications such as high harmonic generation, nano-scale processing and control of chemical reactions. The evolution of the rotational wave packet and its dynamics leading to orientation and alignment is the topic of the present discussion. The major part of this article primarily presents an overview of recent theoretical progress in controlling the orientation and alignment dynamics of a molecule by means of shaped laser pulses. The various theoretical approaches that lead to orientation and alignment such as static electrostatic field in combination with laser field(s), combination of orienting and aligning field, combination of aligning fields, combination of orienting fields, application of train of pulses etc. are discussed. It is observed that the train of pulses is quite an efficient tool for increasing the orientation or alignment of a molecule without causing the molecule to ionize. The orientation and alignment both can occur in adiabatic and non-adiabatic conditions with the rotational period of the molecule taken under consideration. The discussion is mostly limited to non-adiabatic rotational excitation (NAREX) i.e. cases in which the pulse duration is shorter than the rotational period of the molecule. We have emphasised on the so called half-cycle pulse (HCP) and square pulse (SQP). The effect of ramped pulses and of collision on the various laser parameters is also studied. We summarize the current discussion by presenting a consistent theoretical approach for describing the action of such pulses on movement of molecules. The impact of a particular pulse shape on the post-pulse dynamics is also calculated and analysed. In addition to this, the roles played by various laser parameters including the laser frequency, the pulse duration and the system temperature etc. are illustrated and discussed. The concept of alignment is extended from one-dimensional alignment to three-dimensional alignment with the proper choice of molecule and the polarised light. We conclude the article by discussing the potential applications of intense laser orientation and alignment.

Mechanism and control of rotational coherence in femtosecond laser-driven N2

We investigate the formation of rotational coherence of N2+ resonantly interacting with an intense femtosecond laser field by numerical simulations based on a strong-field ionization-coupling model described with the density matrix formalism. The created N2+ system is unique in many aspects: the variable total population within the pump duration due to the intensity-dependent ionization injection, the readily accessible resonance owing to the effect of Stark shift, and the involvement of a few dozen of quantum states. By regarding the N2+ system as an open and non-stationary Λ-type cascaded multi-level system, we quantitatively studied the dependence of rotational coherence in different electronic-vibrational states of N2+ on the alignment angle θ and the pumping intensity. Our simulation results indicate that the quantum coherence between the neighbouring rotational states of J, J+2 in the vibrational state ν=0, 1 of the ground state of N2+ can be changed from a negative to a positive. The significant contribution of rotational coherence to inducing an extra gain or absorption of N2+ air lasing is further verified by solving the Maxwell's propagating equation. The finding provides crucial clues on how to manipulate N2+ lasing by controlling the rotational coherence and paves the way to studying strong-field quantum optics effects such as lasing without inversion and electromagnetically induced transparency in molecular ionic systems.

Rotational Dynamics of Quantum State-Selected Symmetric-Top Molecules in Nonresonant Femtosecond Laser Fields

Rotational dynamics of quantum state selected and unselected CH₃I molecules in intense femtosecond laser fields has been studied. The orientation and alignment evolutions are derived from a pump-probe measurement and in good agreement with the numerical results from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) calculation. The different rotational transitions through nonresonant Raman process have been assigned from the Fourier analysis of the orientation and alignment revivals. These revivals are derived from a pump-probe measurement and in good agreement with the numerical results from the TDSE calculation. For the molecules in rotational state |1, ±1, ∓1⟩, the transitions can be assigned to ΔJ = ±1, ±2, while for thermally populated molecules, the transitions are ΔJ = ±2. Our results illustrate that the orientation and alignment revivals of the rotational quantum-state-selected molecules give a deep insight into the rotational excitation pathways for the transition of different rotational states of molecules in ultrafast laser fields.

Controlling rotational dynamics and alignment of molecule by infrared laser pulse

We investigate the effects of delayed infrared laser (IRL) pulse shape on the non-adiabatic rotational excitation and alignment of a polar molecule. We suggest a control scheme for choosing populations of molecular rotational states by wave packet interference. The rotational wave packets of polar molecule (here HBr) excited non-adiabatically by orienting pulse is controlled actually using the second delayed IRL pulse. By adjusting the time delay between the two laser pulses and the shape of delayed IRL pulse, constructive or destructive interference among these wave packets enables the population to be enhanced or repressed for the specific rotational state. We have used fourth order Runge-Kutta method to study the non-adiabatic rotational excitation (NAREX) dynamics.

Pulse shape effect of delayed pulse on non-adiabatic rotational excitation

We examine the time evolution of Non-adiabatic excitation of polar molecule in static field exposed to a combination of delayed pulses. The delayed pulse pair consists of half cycle pulse (HCP) and an another delayed pulse (either ultrashort half cycle pulse or zero area pulse). We describe how Non-adiabatic rotational excitation (NAREX) due to Gaussian HCP pulse alone can be greatly modified by applying ultrashort HCP/zero area pulse. It is also shown that non-adiabatic rotational excitation can be controlled by various laser parameters, out of which pulse shape plays the most significant role for controlling the dynamics. Time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) of NAREX dynamics, are studied using efficient fourth order Runge Kutta method.
