On decomposing mixed-mode oscillations and their return maps

Strong symmetry breaking rhythms created by folded nodes in a pair of symmetrically coupled, identical Koper oscillators

The Koper model is a prototype system with two slow variables and one fast variable that possesses small-amplitude oscillations (SAOs), large-amplitude oscillations (LAOs), and mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs). In this article, we study a pair of identical Koper oscillators that are symmetrically coupled. Strong symmetry breaking rhythms are presented of the types SAO-LAO, SAO-MMO, LAO-MMO, and MMO-MMO, in which the oscillators simultaneously exhibit rhythms of different types. We identify the key folded nodes that serve as the primary mechanisms responsible for the strong nature of the symmetry breaking. The maximal canards of these folded nodes guide the orbits through the neighborhoods of these key points. For all of the strong symmetry breaking rhythms we present, the rhythms exhibited by the two oscillators are separated by maximal canards in the phase space of the oscillator.

Bifurcations of mixed-mode oscillations in three-timescale systems: An extended prototypical example

We study a class of multi-parameter three-dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations that exhibit dynamics on three distinct timescales. We apply geometric singular perturbation theory to explore the dependence of the geometry of these systems on their parameters, with a focus on mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) and their bifurcations. In particular, we uncover a novel geometric mechanism that encodes the transition from MMOs with single epochs of small-amplitude oscillations (SAOs) to those with double-epoch SAOs; the former feature SAOs or pseudo-plateau bursting either "below" or "above" in their time series, while in the latter, SAOs or pseudo-plateau bursting occur both "below" and "above." We identify a relatively simple prototypical three-timescale system that realizes our mechanism, featuring a one-dimensional S-shaped 2-critical manifold that is embedded into a two-dimensional S-shaped critical manifold in a symmetric fashion. We show that the Koper model from chemical kinetics is merely a particular realization of that prototypical system for a specific choice of parameters; in particular, we explain the robust occurrence of mixed-mode dynamics with double epochs of SAOs therein. Finally, we argue that our geometric mechanism can elucidate the mixed-mode dynamics of more complicated systems with a similar underlying geometry, such as a three-dimensional, three-timescale reduction of the Hodgkin-Huxley equations from mathematical neuroscience.

A geometric analysis of the SIRS epidemiological model on a homogeneous network

We study a fast-slow version of an SIRS epidemiological model on homogeneous graphs, obtained through the application of the moment closure method. We use GSPT to study the model, taking into account that the infection period is much shorter than the average duration of immunity. We show that the dynamics occurs through a sequence of fast and slow flows, that can be described through 2-dimensional maps that, under some assumptions, can be approximated as 1-dimensional maps. Using this method, together with numerical bifurcation tools, we show that the model can give rise to periodic solutions, differently from the corresponding model based on homogeneous mixing.

Stochastic mixed-mode oscillations in a three-species predator-prey model

The effect of demographic stochasticity, in the form of Gaussian white noise, in a predator-prey model with one fast and two slow variables is studied. We derive the stochastic differential equations (SDEs) from a discrete model. For suitable parameter values, the deterministic drift part of the model admits a folded node singularity and exhibits a singular Hopf bifurcation. We focus on the parameter regime near the Hopf bifurcation, where small amplitude oscillations exist as stable dynamics in the absence of noise. In this regime, the stochastic model admits noise-driven mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs), which capture the intermediate dynamics between two cycles of population outbreaks. We perform numerical simulations to calculate the distribution of the random number of small oscillations between successive spikes for varying noise intensities and distance to the Hopf bifurcation. We also study the effect of noise on a suitable Poincaré map. Finally, we prove that the stochastic model can be transformed into a normal form near the folded node, which can be linked to recent results on the interplay between deterministic and stochastic small amplitude oscillations. The normal form can also be used to study the parameter influence on the noise level near folded singularities.

Stochasticity induced mixed-mode oscillations and distribution of recurrent outbreaks in an ecosystem

The effect of stochasticity, in the form of Gaussian white noise, in a predator-prey model with two distinct time-scales is presented. A supercritical singular Hopf bifurcation yields a Type II excitability in the deterministic model. We explore the effect of stochasticity in the excitable regime, leading to dynamics that are not anticipated by its deterministic counterpart. The stochastic model admits several kinds of noise-driven mixed-mode oscillations which capture the intermediate dynamics between two cycles of population outbreaks. Depending on the strength of noise, the prey population exhibits intermediate to high-amplitude fluctuations (related to moderate or severe outbreaks respectively). We classify these fluctuations as isolated or intermittent or as clusters depending on their recurrences. We study the distribution of the random variable N, representing the number of small oscillations between successive spikes, as a function of the noise intensity and the distance to the Hopf bifurcation. The distribution of N is "asymptotically geometric" with the corresponding parameter related to the principal eigenvalue of a substochastic Markov chain. Finally, the stochastic model is transformed into its "normal form" which is used to obtain an estimate of the probability of repeated outbreaks.
