Multiple coherence resonance induced by time-periodic coupling in stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal networks

White-noise-induced double coherence resonances in reduced Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model near subcritical Hopf bifurcation

Coherence resonance (CR) describes a counterintuitive phenomenon in which the optimal oscillatory responses in nonlinear systems are shaped by a suitable noise amplitude. This phenomenon has been observed in neural systems. In this research, the generation of double coherence resonances (DCRs) due to white noise is investigated in a three-dimensional reduced Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model with multiple-timescale feature. We show that additive white noise can induce DCRs from the resting state near a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The appearance of DCRs is related to the changes of the firing pattern aroused by the increases of the noise amplitude. The underlying dynamical mechanisms for the appearance of the DCRs and the changes of the firing pattern are interpreted using the phase space analysis and the dynamics of the stable focus-node near the subcritical Hopf bifurcation. We find that the multiple-timescale dynamics is essential for generating the DCRs and different firing patterns. The results not only present a case in which noise can induce DCRs near a Hopf bifurcation but also provide its dynamical mechanism, which enriches the phenomena in nonlinear dynamics and provides further understanding on the roles of noise in neural systems with multiple-timescale feature.

Cooperative effect of random and time-periodic coupling strength on synchronization transitions in one-way coupled neural system: mean field approach

The cooperative effect of random coupling strength and time-periodic coupling strengh on synchronization transitions in one-way coupled neural system has been investigated by mean field approach. Results show that cooperative coupling strength (CCS) plays an active role for the enhancement of synchronization transitions. There exist an optimal frequency of CCS which makes the system display the best CCS-induced synchronization transitions, a critical frequency of CCS which can not further affect the CCS-induced synchronization transitions, and a critical amplitude of CCS which can not occur the CCS-induced synchronization transitions. Meanwhile, noise intensity plays a negative role for the CCS-induced synchronization transitions. Furthermore, it is found that the novel CCS amplitude-induced synchronization transitions and CCS frequency-induced synchronization transitions are found.

Autapse-induced multiple coherence resonance in single neurons and neuronal networks

We study the effects of electrical and chemical autapse on the temporal coherence or firing regularity of single stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons and scale-free neuronal networks. Also, we study the effects of chemical autapse on the occurrence of spatial synchronization in scale-free neuronal networks. Irrespective of the type of autapse, we observe autaptic time delay induced multiple coherence resonance for appropriately tuned autaptic conductance levels in single neurons. More precisely, we show that in the presence of an electrical autapse, there is an optimal intensity of channel noise inducing the multiple coherence resonance, whereas in the presence of chemical autapse the occurrence of multiple coherence resonance is less sensitive to the channel noise intensity. At the network level, we find autaptic time delay induced multiple coherence resonance and synchronization transitions, occurring at approximately the same delay lengths. We show that these two phenomena can arise only at a specific range of the coupling strength, and that they can be observed independently of the average degree of the network.
