Abstract
The propensity of the π-electron system lying above a polycyclic aromatic system to engage in a halogen bond is examined by DFT calculations. Prototype Lewis acid CF3I is placed above the planes of benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, naphthacene, chrysene, triphenyl, pyrene, and coronene. The I atom positions itself some 3.3-3.4 Å above the polycyclic plane, and the associated interaction energy is about 4 kcal/mol. This quantity is a little smaller for benzene, but is roughly equal for the larger polycyclics. The energy only oscillates a little as the Lewis acid slides across the face of the polycyclic, preferring regions of higher π-electron density over minima of the electrostatic potential. The binding is dominated by dispersion which contributes half of the total interaction energy.

Abstract
Whereas pnicogen atoms like P and As have been shown repeatedly to act as electron acceptors in pnicogen bonds, the same is not true of the more electronegative first-row N atom. Quantum calculations assess whether N can serve in this capacity in such bonds and under what conditions. There is a positive π-hole belt that surrounds the central N atom in the linear arrangement of NNNF, NNN-CN, and NNO, which can engage a NH3 base to form a pnicogen bond with binding energy between 3 and 5 kcal/mol. Within the context of a planar arrangement, the π-hole above the N in NO2OF, N(CN)3, and CF3NO2 is also capable of forming a pnicogen bond, the strongest of which amounts to 11 kcal/mol with NMe3 as base. In their pyramidal geometry, NF3 and N(NO2)3 engage with a base through the σ-hole on the central N, with variable binding energies between 2 and 9 kcal/mol. AIM and NBO provide somewhat different interpretations of the secondary interactions that occur in some of these complexes.

Abstract
The sigma (σ)-hole effect has emerged as a promising tool to construct novel architectures endowed with new properties. A simple yet effective strategy for the generation of monofluoromethyl radicals is a continuing challenge within the synthetic community. Fluoromethylphosphonium salts are easily available, air- and thermally stable, as well as simple-to-handle. Herein, we report the ability of the σ-hole effect to facilitate the visible-light-triggered photolysis of phosphonium iodide salts, a charge-transfer complex, selectively giving fluoromethyl radicals. The usefulness and versatility of this new protocol are demonstrated through the mono-, di-, and trifluoromethylation of a variety of alkenes.

Abstract
The ability of the T and Z atoms of TR3ZR2 to engage in a noncovalent interaction with NH3 is assessed by DFT calculations, where the T atom refers to C, Si, and Ge; Z = As, Sb, and P; and substituents R = H and F. In most instances, the tetrel bond (TB) is both stronger and shorter than the pnicogen bond (ZB). These two bond strengths can be equalized, or preference shifted to the ZB, if F substituents are placed on the Z and H on the T atoms. Employing C as the T atom results in a very weak TB, with the ZB clearly favored energetically. The simultaneous formation of both TB and ZB weakens both, particularly the latter, but both bonds survive intact. Geometric and spectroscopic perturbations of the subunits reflect the two types of noncovalent bonds.

Abstract
The role of nitrogen, the first member of the pnicogen group, as an electron donor in hypervalent non-covalent interactions has been established long ago, while observation of its electron accepting capability is still elusive experimentally, and remains quite intriguing, conceptually. In the light of minimal computational exploration of this novel class of pnicogen bonding so far, the present work provides experimental proof with unprecedented clarity, for the existence of N(acceptor)N(donor) interaction using the model nitromethane (NM) molecule with ammonia (AM) as a Lewis base in NM-AM aggregates. The NM-AM dimer, in which the nitrogen atom of NM (as a unique pnicogen) accepts electrons from AM (the traditional electron donor), was synthesized at low temperatures under isolated conditions within inert gas matrixes and was characterized using infrared spectroscopy. The experimental generation of the NM-AM dimer stabilized via NN interaction has strong corroboration from ab initio calculations. Furthermore, confirmation regarding the directional prevalence of this NN interaction over C-HN and N-HO hydrogen bonding is elucidated quantitatively by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), electrostatic potential mapping (ESP), natural bond orbital (NBO), non-covalent interaction (NCI) and energy decomposition (ED) analyses. The present study also allows the extension of σ-hole/π-hole driven interactions to the atoms of the second period, in spite of their low polarizability.

Abstract
Bifurcated halogen bonds are constructed with FBr and FI as Lewis acids, paired with NH3 and NCH bases. The first type considered places two bases together with a single acid, while the reverse case of two acids sharing a single base constitutes the second type. These bifurcated systems are compared with the analogous H-bonds wherein FH serves as the acid. In most cases, a bifurcated system is energetically inferior to a single linear bond. There is a larger energetic cost to forcing the single σ-hole of an acid to interact with a pair of bases, than the other way around where two acids engage with the lone pair of a single base. In comparison to FBr and FI, the H-bonding FH acid is better able to participate in a bifurcated sharing with two bases. This behavior is traced to the properties of the monomers, in particular the specific shape of the molecular electrostatic potential, the anisotropy of the orbitals of the acid and base that interact directly with one another, and the angular extent of the total electron density of the two molecules.

Abstract
The tetrel bond (TB) recruits an element drawn from the C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb family as electron acceptor in an interaction with a partner Lewis base. The underlying principles that explain this attractive interaction are described in terms of occupied and vacant orbitals, total electron density, and electrostatic potential. These principles facilitate a delineation of the factors that feed into a strong TB. The geometric deformation that occurs within the tetrel-bearing Lewis acid monomer is a particularly important issue, with both primary and secondary effects. As a first-row atom of low polarizability, C is a reluctant participant in TBs, but its preponderance in organic and biochemistry make it extremely important that its potential in this regard be thoroughly understood. The IR and NMR manifestations of tetrel bonding are explored as spectroscopy offers a bridge to experimental examination of this phenomenon. In addition to the most common σ-hole type TBs, discussion is provided of π-hole interactions which are a result of a common alternate covalent bonding pattern of tetrel atoms.

Abstract
Heterodimers of POCl3-CHCl3 were generated in Ne, Ar, and Kr matrixes at low temperatures and were studied using infrared spectroscopy. The remarkable role of co-operative pentavalent phosphorus bonding in the stabilization of the structure dictated by hydrogen bonding is deciphered. The complete potential energy surface of the heterodimer was scanned by ab initio and density functional theory computational methodologies. The hydrogen bond between the phosphoryl oxygen of POCl3 and C-H group of CHCl3 in heterodimers induces a blue-shift in the C-H stretching frequency within the Ne matrix. However, in Ar and Kr matrixes, the C-H stretching frequency is exceptionally red-shifted in stark contrast with Ne. The plausibility of the Fermi resonance by the C-H stretching vibrational mode with higher order modes in the heterodimers has been eliminated as a possible cause within Ar and Kr matrixes by isotopic substitution (CDCl3) experiments. To evaluate the influence of matrixes as a possible cause of red-shift, self-consistent Iso-density polarized continuum reaction field model was applied. This conveyed the important role of the dielectric matrixes in inducing the fascinating vibrational shift from blue (Ne) to red (Ar and Kr) due to the matrix specific transmutation of the POCl3-CHCl3 structure. The heterodimer produced in the Ne matrix possesses a cyclic structure stabilized by hydrogen bonding with co-operative phosphorus bonding, while in Ar and Kr the generation of an acyclic open structure stabilized solely by hydrogen bonding is promoted. Compelling justification regarding the dispersion force based influence of matrix environments in addition to the well-known dielectric influence is presented.

Abstract
Albeit the first account of hypervalentπ interactions has been reported with halogenπ interactions, the feasibility of their extension to other hypervalent atoms as possible Lewis acids is still open. In this work, the role of phosphorus as an acceptor from the π electron cloud (Pπ pnicogen or phosphorus bonding) in PCl3-C2H2 and PCl3-C2H4 heterodimers is explored, by combining matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy with ab initio and DFT computational methodologies. The respective potential energy surfaces of the PCl3-C2H2 and PCl3-C2H4 heterodimers reveal unique minima stabilized by a concert of reasonably strong to weak interactions, of which Pπ phosphorus bonding was energetically dominant. Heterodimers, trimers and tetramers bound primarily by this unique phosphorus bond were generated at low temperatures. The dominance of phosphorus bonding in the PCl3-C2H2 and PCl3-C2H4 heterodimers over other interactions (such as Hπ, HCl, HP, Clπ and lone pair-π interactions) was confirmed and substantiated using extended quantum theory of atoms in molecules, natural bond orbital, electrostatic potential mapping and energy decomposition analyses. The following inferences in correlation with results from non-covalent-interaction analysis offer a complete understanding of the nature of the Pπ phosphorus bonding interactions. The significance of electrostatic forces kinetically favoring the formation of phosphorus bonded heterodimers, in addition to thermodynamic stabilization, is demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract
Noble gas (or aerogen) bond (NgB) can be outlined as the attractive interaction between an electron-rich atom or group of atoms and any element of Group-18 acting as an electron acceptor. The IUPAC already recommended systematic nomenclature for the interactions of groups 17 and 16 (halogen and chalcogen bonds, respectively). Investigations dealing with noncovalent interactions involving main group elements (acting as Lewis acids) have rapidly grown in recent years. They are becoming acting players in essential fields such as crystal engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and catalysis. For obvious reasons, the works devoted to the study of noncovalent Ng-bonding interactions are significantly less abundant than halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, and tetrel bonding. Nevertheless, in this short review, relevant theoretical and experimental investigations on noncovalent interactions involving Xenon are emphasized. Several theoretical works have described the physical nature of NgB and their interplay with other noncovalent interactions, which are discussed herein. Moreover, exploring the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD), it is demonstrated that NgB interactions are crucial in governing the X-ray packing of xenon derivatives. Concretely, special attention is given to xenon fluorides and xenon oxides, since they exhibit a strong tendency to establish NgBs.

Abstract
To account for the charge transfer and covalent character in bonding between P and Bi centers, the electronic structures of [P(C6H4-o-CH2SCH3)3BiCln](3-n)+ (n = 0-3) model species have been investigated computationally. On the basis of this survey a synthetic target compound with a dative P→Bi bond has been selected. Consecutively, the highly reactive bismuth cage [P(C6H4-o-CH2SCH3)3Bi]3+ has been accessed experimentally and characterized. Importantly, our experiments (single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy) and computations (NBO and AIM analysis) reveal that the P···Bi bonding in this trication can be described as a dative bond. Here we have shown that our accordion-like molecular framework allows for tuning of the interaction between P and Bi centers.

Abstract
A central pnicogen Z atom (Z = Sb, As) is covalently attached to the O atom of three -O(CH2)nX chains where X represents either an aldehyde or amine group. The chain can fold around so that the basic X group can engage in a noncovalent pnicogen bond with the central Z. The formation of up to three pnicogen bonds is energetically favored. The amine appears to engage in stronger pnicogen bonds than does the aldehyde, and bonds to Sb are favored over As, but there is little dependence on the length of the chain. The formation of each successive pnicogen bond reduces the magnitude of the σ-holes surrounding the Z atom, which tends to weaken the attraction for the basic end of the chain.

Abstract
![]()
A central ZF3 molecule (Z = P, As, Sb, Bi) is allowed
to interact with a number of nucleophiles exemplified by NCH, NH3, and NC– anion. The Z···N
pnicogen bond (ZB) to a single base grows stronger for heavier Z atom:
P < A < Sb < Bi and follows the NCH < NH3 <
NC– order for the three bases. The maximum number
of ZBs depends on both the nature of the base and pnicogen atom. PF3 and AsF3 can pnicogen bond with only a single
CN–; SbF3 and BiF3 can interact
with two anions but only weakly. The weak NCH nucleophile can engage
in a maximum of two ZBs, while three ZBs occur for NH3.
The latter NH3 maximum can be extended to four ZBs but
only for BiF3. The fourth ZB is somewhat longer and weaker
than the others, and the entire (H3N)4···BiF3 complex relies partially on secondary interactions for its
stability.

Abstract
Tetrel bonds are noncovalent interactions formed by tetrel atoms (as σ-hole carriers) with a Lewis base. Here, we present a computational and molecular orbital study on the effect of the geometry of the substituents around the tetrel atom on the σ-hole and on the binding strengths. We show that changing the angles between substituents can dramatically increase bond strength. In addition, our findings suggest that the established Sn > Ge > Si order of binding strength can be changed in sufficiently distorted molecules due to the enhancement of the charge transfer component, making silicon the strongest tetrel donor.

Abstract
Ab initio calculations are employed to assess the relative strengths of various noncovalent bonds. Tetrel, pnicogen, chalcogen, and halogen atoms are represented by third-row atoms Ge, As, Se, and Br, respectively. Each atom was placed in a series of molecular bonding situations, beginning with all H atoms, then progressing to methyl substitutions, and F substituents placed in various locations around the central atom. Each Lewis acid was allowed to engage in a complex with NH₃ as a common nucleophile, and the strength and other aspects of the dimer were assessed. In the context of fully hydrogenated acids, the strengths of the various bonds varied in the pattern of chalcogen > halogen > pnicogen ≈ tetrel. Methyl substitution weakened all bonds, but not in a uniform manner, resulting in a greatly weakened halogen bond. Fluorosubstitution strengthened the interactions, increasing its effect as the number of F atoms rises. The effect was strongest when the F atom lay directly opposite the base, resulting in a halogen > chalcogen > pnicogen > tetrel order of bond strength. Replacing third-row atoms by their second-row counterparts weakened the bonds, but not uniformly. Tetrel bonds were weakest for the fully hydrogenated acids and surpassed pnicogen bonds when F had been added to the acid.

Abstract
A series of uranyl thiocyanate and selenocyanate of the type [R4N]3[UO2(NCS)5] (R4 = nBu4, Me3Bz, Et3Bz), [Ph4P][UO2(NCS)3(NO3)] and [R4N]3[UO2(NCSe)5] (R4 = Me4, nPr4, Et3Bz) have been prepared and structurally characterized. The resulting noncovalent interactions have been examined and compared to other examples in the literature. The nature of these interactions is determined by the cation so that when the alkyl groups are small, chalcogenide···chalcogenide interactions are present, but this "switches off" when R = nPr and charge assisted U═O···H-C and S(e)···H-C hydrogen bonding remain the dominant interaction. Increasing the size of the chain to nBu results in only S···H-C interactions. The spectroscopic implications of these chalcogenide interactions have been explored in the vibrational and photophysical properties of the series [R4N]3[UO2(NCS)5] (R4 = Me4, Et4, nPr4, nBu4, Me3Bz, Et3Bz), [R4N]3[UO2(NCSe)5] (R4 = Me4, nPr4, Et3Bz) and [Et4N]4[UO2(NCSe)5][NCSe]. The data suggest that U═O···H-C interactions are weak and do not perturb the uranyl moiety. While the chalcogenide interactions do not influence the photophysical properties, a coupling of the U═O and δ(NCS) or δ(NCSe) vibrational modes is observed in the 77 K solid state emission spectra. A theoretical examination of representative examples of Se···Se, C-H···Se, and C-H···O═U by molecular electrostatic potentials and NBO and AIM methodologies gives a deeper understanding of these weak interactions. C-H···Se are individually weak but C-H···O═U interactions are even weaker, supporting the idea that the -yl oxo's are weak Lewis bases. An Atoms in Molecules study suggests that the chalcogenide interaction is similar to lone pair···π or fluorine···fluorine interactions. An oxidation of the NCS ligands to form [(UO2)(SO4)2(H2O)4]·3H2O was also noted.

Abstract
A theoretical study of [X.X'.X'']phosphatrane:Lewis acid complexes has been carried out in order to analyze how the in:out and out:out conformations can be modulated by the interaction with Lewis acids (LA). It has been found that in:out structures are more stable in larger systems i.e. in [4.4.3]:LA and [4.4.4]:LA than in [3.3.3]:LA and [4.3.3]:LA. The results obtained for the relative energies in conjunction with electron density properties showed that upon complexation, in:out conformers become more stable with the increasing acidity of the corresponding Lewis acid. In fact, the binding energies found for in:out complexes are larger than those obtained for out:out complexes. The complexes with the largest relative energy favoring the in:out structure correspond to those with charged Lewis acids, followed by the complexes with ClF. In all cases, the complexes are cooperative, reaching a maximum value of 168.5 kJ mol-1 for the [4.3.3]:F+ complex.
