Abstract
Conformational space of methoxyacetone (MA) was studied at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) and DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. Computations predict MA to adopt four conformations, resulting from internal rotations around the O=C-C-O (Trans, Cis) and C-C-O-C (trans, gauche) dihedral angles. The Tt (Trans-trans) conformer is the most stable. The computed energies of two gauche (Tg and Cg) conformers fall in the 3-8 kJ mol-1 range above Tt and should account for 1/3 of the room-temperature gas-phase equilibrium. The energy of Ct form is 11 kJ mol-1 above Tt, and its expected population is negligible (below 1 %). In our earlier work, MA monomers were isolated in cryogenic argon matrices and characterized by infrared spectroscopy. In the experiment, only the most stable Tt conformer was detected in the sample. Signatures of the other conformers were not detected, either in freshly deposited samples, or in samples subjected to different UV irradiations. We rationalize those observations in terms of computed barriers for intramolecular torsions, indicating occurrence of conformational cooling during deposition. The experimental infrared spectrum of the Tt form is now assigned with the aid of anharmonic DFT computations. Exposure of MA to UV irradiation in the 300-260 nm range led to photolysis, according to the Norrish type II mechanism, resulting in dimer between enol acetone and formaldehyde observed as a cage-confined intermediate photoproduct. The subsequent photolysis resulted in the formation of carbon monoxide as the dominating photoproduct, formed in the Norrish type I photoreaction. Mechanistic interpretation of this photo decarbonylation reaction is presented.

Abstract
Monomers of meta-fluorophenol (mFP) were trapped from the gas phase into cryogenic argon and nitrogen matrices. The estimated relative energies of the two conformers are very close, and in the gas phase they have nearly equal populations. Due to the similarity of their structures (they only differ in the orientation of the OH group), the two conformers have also similar predicted vibrational signatures, which makes the vibrational characterization of the individual rotamers challenging. In the present work, it has been established that in an argon matrix only the most stable trans conformer of mFP exists (the OH group pointing away from the fluorine atom). On the other hand, the IR spectrum of mFP in a nitrogen matrix testifies to the simultaneous presence in this matrix of both the trans conformer and of the higher-energy cis conformer (the OH group pointing toward the fluorine atom), which is stabilized by interaction with the matrix gas host. We found that the exposition of the cryogenic N2 matrix to the Globar source of the infrared spectrometer affects the conformational populations. By collecting experimental spectra, either in the full mid-infrared range or only in the range below 2200 cm-1, we were able to reliably distinguish two sets of experimental bands originating from individual conformers. A comparison of the two sets of experimental bands with computed infrared spectra of the conformers allowed, for the first time, the unequivocal vibrational identification of each of them. The joint implementation of computational vibrational spectroscopy and matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy proved to be a very accurate method of structural analysis. Some mechanistic insights into conformational isomerism (the quantum tunneling of hydrogen atom and vibrationally-induced conformational transformations) have been addressed. Finally, we also subjected matrix-isolated mFP to irradiations with UV light, and the phototransformations observed in these experiments are also described.

Abstract
5-Chlorosalicylaldehyde (abbreviated as 5CSA) is an important chemical used in the synthesis of fragrances, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. In this investigation, 5CSA isolated in solid N2, at 10 K, and in its neat amorphous and crystalline phases, at 50 and 190 K, respectively, were investigated by infrared spectroscopy and DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) calculations. The systematic theoretical analysis of the 5CSA conformational landscape showed that the compound exhibits four different conformers, which were structurally characterized in detail. In the as-deposited low-temperature matrices of 5CSA, only the most stable conformer, the intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded form I, was found. The same was observed in the case of the investigated low-temperature amorphous and crystalline phases of 5CSA. Conformer I was successfully converted into a higher-energy conformer(II), where both aldehyde and hydroxyl groups are rotated by 180° relative to their position in the initial conformer, through narrowband ultraviolet (UV) (λ = 308 nm) in situ irradiation of the as-deposited N2 matrix of 5CSA. The infrared spectra of both matrix-isolated conformers, as well as those of the neat amorphous and crystalline phases of 5CSA, were assigned and interpreted in comparative terms, allowing us to elucidate structurally and vibrationally relevant effects of the main intra- and intermolecular interactions operating in the different studied phases. Very interestingly, the observed UV-induced I → II rotamerization was found to take place in an exclusive basis, with no other photochemical processes being observed to occur upon UV irradiation, under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation.

Abstract
In this work, monomers of carvacrol (5-isopropyl-2-methylphenol), a natural monoterpene exhibiting wide range bioactivity, were trapped in a cryogenic argon matrix and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, while quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP and MP2 levels were employed to characterize the conformational landscape of the isolated molecule. Four conformers have been localized on the potential energy surface, and the factors accounting for their relative stability were analyzed. The two most stable conformers of carvacrol, differing in the relative orientation of the isopropyl group and both having the OH group pointing away from the vicinal methyl fragment, were identified in the cryomatrix for the first time. The individual spectral signatures of the two conformers were distinguished based on the change in their relative abundance induced by exposing the matrix to broadband infrared light. Matrix-isolated carvacrol was also irradiated with broadband UV light (λ > 200 nm), which resulted in the cleavage of the OH group. Recombination of the released H atom at the ortho- or para-position of the ring resulted in the formation of alkyl-substituted cyclohexadienones. These were found to undergo subsequent valence and open-ring isomerizations, leading, respectively, to the formation of a Dewar isomer and open-chain conjugated ketenes. Decarbonylation of the photoproducts was also observed for longer irradiation times. A mechanistic analysis of the observed photochemical transformations is presented.

Abstract
The monomers of 1,3-benzoxazole isolated in a cryogenic argon matrix were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The photochemistry of matrix-isolated 1,3-benzoxazole, induced by excitation with a frequency-tunable narrowband UV light, was investigated. Irradiation at 233 nm resulted in a nearly quantitative conversion of 1,3-benzoxazole into 2-isocyanophenol. The individual photochemical behavior of the in situ produced 2-isocyanophenol was studied upon excitations at 290 nm, where 1,3-benzoxazole does not react. The photochemistry of isomeric matrix-isolated 2-cyanophenol was also studied. The photoreactions of 2-substituted (cyano- or isocyano-) phenols were found to have many similarities: (i) OH bond cleavage, yielding a 2-substituted (cyano- or isocyano-) phenoxyl radical and an H-atom, (ii) recombination of the detached H-atom, resulting in an oxo tautomer, and (iii) decomposition leading to fulvenone, together with HCN and HNC. In another photoprocess, 2-cyanophenol undergoes a [1,5] H-shift from the hydroxyl group to the cyano group yielding isomeric ketenimine. The analogous [1,5] H-shift from the hydroxyl group to the isocyano group must have also occurred in 2-isocyanophenol; however, the resulting nitrile ylide isomer is kinetically unstable and collapses to benzoxazole. All photoproducts were characterized by comparing their observed infrared spectra with those computed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. The mechanistic analysis of the photochemistry occurring in the family of the title compounds is presented.

Abstract
Three low-energy isomers of 9-methylguanine, the amino-oxo (AO) form and two amino-hydroxy (AH1 and AH2) conformers, were trapped from the gas phase into low-temperature argon matrices. The AH1 and AH2 isomers, differing in the orientation of the OH group, were found to transform into each other upon excitation with near-IR light. The population of the AO form of the compound was not changed upon any near-IR irradiation of the matrix samples. Using monochromatic near-IR light, generated by a frequency-tunable laser source, it was possible to selectively induce the AH1 → AH2 or AH2 → AH1 conversion. Photoreversibility of this conformational transformation was then demonstrated. Exposure of matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine to broadband near-IR light also led to conformational conversions within the amino-hydroxy tautomeric form; the final stage of this process was always the same photostationary state independent of the initial ratio of AH1 and AH2 populations. Spontaneous conformational conversion, transforming the higher-energy AH2 form into the lower-energy AH1 isomer, was observed for matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine kept in the dark. The mechanism of this process must rely on quantum tunneling of the light hydrogen atom. Irradiation of matrix-isolated 9-methylguanine with UV laser light at λ = 288 or 285 nm led to a substantial consumption of the two AH forms, while the amount of AO isomer remained unchanged. On the other hand, a decrease in the population of the AO isomer occurred upon excitations at shorter wavelengths, λ = 280 or 275 nm. The spectral changes observed after UV-irradiation suggest the generation (and stabilization in the matrix) of a radical species, resulting from the photocleavage of the O-H or N1-H bonds, in the AH or AO isomer, respectively.

Abstract
The catechol functional group plays a major role in the chemistry of a wide variety of molecules important in biology and technology. In eumelanin, intermolecular hydrogen bonding between these functional groups is thought to contribute to UV photoprotective and radical buffering properties, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, aggregates of 4-t-butylcatechol are used as model systems to study how intermolecular hydrogen bonding influences photochemical pathways that may occur in eumelanin. Ultrafast UV-visible and mid-IR transient absorption measurements are used to identify the photochemical processes of 4-t-butylcatechol monomers and their hydrogen-bonded aggregates in cyclohexane solution. Monomer photoexcitation results in hydrogen atom ejection to the solvent via homolytic O-H bond dissociation with a time constant of 12 ps, producing a neutral semiquinone radical with a lifetime greater than 1 ns. In contrast, intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions within aggregates retard O-H bond photodissociation by over an order of magnitude in time. Excited state structural relaxation is proposed to slow O-H dissociation, allowing internal conversion to the ground state to occur in hundreds of picoseconds in competition with this channel. The semiquinone radicals formed in the aggregates exhibit spectral broadening of both their electronic and vibrational transitions.

Abstract
We report on the aromatic noble-gas hydride, C6H5CCXeH, identified in a xenon matrix using infrared spectroscopy and extensive quantum chemical calculations. This molecule is prepared by 250-nm photolysis of phenylacetylene (C6H5CCH) isolated in a xenon matrix and subsequent thermal mobilization of hydrogen atoms at about 40 K. The characteristic H-Xe stretching mode of C6H5CCXeH is observed at about 1500 cm-1, and a number of other fundamentals also appear in the experimental spectra. The assignment is supported by deuteration experiments providing predictable shifts of the vibrational frequencies. The experimental and calculated spectra are in a good agreement. C6H5CCXeH is computationally lower in energy than the C6H5CC + Xe + H fragments by about 0.60 eV at the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ-PP level of theory, which allows its formation at low temperatures. C6H5CCXeH is the first aromatic noble-gas hydride and the first halogen-free aromatic noble-gas compound.

Abstract
Ellipticine is a natural product that is currently being actively investigated for its inhibitory cancer and HIV properties. Here we use path-integral molecular dynamics coupled with excited state calculations to characterize the role of nuclear quantum effects on the structural and electronic properties of ellipticine in water, a common biological solvent. Quantum effects collectively enhance the fluctuations of both light and heavy nuclei of the covalent and hydrogen bonds in ellipticine. In particular, for the ellipticine-water system, where the proton donor and acceptor have different proton affinities, we find that nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) strengthen both the strong and the weak H bonds. This is in contrast to what is observed for the cases where the proton affinity of the donors and acceptors is same. These structural fluctuations cause a significant red-shift in the absorption spectra and an increase in the broadening, bringing it into closer agreement with the experiments. Our work shows that nuclear quantum effects alter both qualitatively and quantitatively the optical properties of this biologically relevant system and highlights the importance of the inclusion of these effects in the microscopic understanding of their optical properties. We propose that isotopic substitution will produce a blue shift and a reduction in the broadening of the absorption peak.

Abstract
Near-infrared (near-IR) narrowband selective vibrational excitation and annealing of gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) isolated in cryogenic matrices were used to induce interconversions between its most stable conformers. The isomerizations were probed by infrared spectroscopy. An extensive set of quantum chemical calculations, carried out at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level of approximation, was used to undertake a detailed analysis of the ground state potential energy surface of the molecule. This investigation of the molecule conformational space allowed extracting mechanistic insights into the observed annealing- or near-IR-induced isomerization processes. The infrared spectra of the two most stable conformers of gallic acid in N2, Xe, and Ar matrices were fully assigned. Finally, the UV-induced photochemistry of the matrix isolated compound was investigated.

Abstract
We present the experimental high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectra of phenol covering for the first time the full 4.3-10.8 eV energy-range, with absolute cross sections determined. Theoretical calculations on the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were performed using time-dependent density functional theory and the equation-of-motion coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitations level. These have been used in the assignment of valence and Rydberg transitions of the phenol molecule. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the 6.401 eV transition, which is here assigned to the 3sσ/σ(∗)(OH)←3π(3a″) transition. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of phenol in the earth's atmosphere (0-50 km).

Abstract
Infrared matrix isolation spectroscopy and DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations have been used to characterize the conformational space of the enol-imine and keto-amine tautomers of N-salicylidene-p-carboxyaniline (SCA) in both their E and Z isomeric forms. Monomers of SCA were isolated in an argon matrix (15 K), which was shown to contain only the most stable conformer of the E-enol isomer of the compound. The matrix-isolated E-enol was then subjected to in situ UV irradiation (λ = 335; 345 nm, provided by a laser/MOPO system, or λ > 235 nm, provided by a Hg(Xe) broad-band source), and the photoinduced processes probed by infrared spectroscopy. Two photoreaction channels were observed, with a branching ratio of ∼1:1, corresponding to E-enol → Z-enol isomerization and E-enol → E-keto tautomerization. Both processes were found to be rather effective, with practically complete consumption of the reactant after broad-band irradiation by 1 min only. Identification among the photoproduced species of the Z-enol conformer that differs from the reactant only by E-to-Z isomerization suggests the initial photoproduction of this conformer, which subsequently decays into the lowest energy Z-enol conformer (also identified experimentally). The E-enol → E-keto tautomerization requires an excited state intramolecular proton transfer and twisting about the exocyclic CC bond of the molecule. These processes most probably take place sequentially. However, in the present study the Z-keto isomer, which should act as intermediate in this sequence of processes, could not be detected, most probably due to its short lifetime under the used experimental conditions. On the contrary, the detailed structural and vibrational characterization of the photoproduced E-keto form was successfully achieved.

Abstract
The structure, infrared spectrum, and photochemistry of 5-hydroxyquinoline (5HQ) were studied by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, complemented by theoretical calculations performed at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level of approximation. According to the calculations, the trans conformer of 5HQ (with the OH group pointing to the opposite direction of the pyridine ring of the molecule) is more stable than the cis form (by ∼8.8 kJ mol(-1)). The main factors determining the relative stability of the two conformers were rationalized through natural bond orbital (NBO) and charge density analyses. The compound was trapped in solid nitrogen at 10 K, and its infrared spectra registered and interpreted, showing the sole presence in the matrix of the more stable trans conformer. Broadband in situ UV irradiations (λ ≥ 288 nm and λ ≥ 235 nm) allowed for the observation of different chemical transformations, which started by excitation to the S1 state of 5HQ, followed by homolytic cleavage of the O-H bond, and subsequent reattachment of the H atom to the 5HQ radical to form quinolin-5(6H)-one and quinolin-5(8H)-one. The first of these two quinolinones was found to convert to open-ring isomeric ketenes, especially when irradiation was performed at higher energy, whereas the second is rather stable under the used experimental conditions. As a whole, the observed photochemistry of matrix-isolated 5HQ closely matches those previously reported for phenol and thiophenol. A detailed mechanistic interpretation for the observed photochemical processes is here proposed, which received support from time-dependent DFT calculations.

Abstract
The infrared spectra of tyramine monomers trapped in low-temperature argon and xenon matrixes were recorded. The presence of the flexible ethylamino side chain gives rise to a complex conformational surface that contains several minima of relatively low energies, some of them stabilized by a weak N-H···π hydrogen bond interaction between the amino group and the phenyl ring. The experimental infrared spectra confirm the presence of at least two stable conformers isolated in the matrixes. Annealing experiments performed on the xenon matrix revealed a change in the relative population of the experimentally relevant conformers upon isolation in this polarizable matrix, compared to the gas phase. The general interpretation of the spectra was based on harmonic and anharmonic quantum chemical calculations, undertaken at the DFT/B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The photochemical behavior of the matrix-isolated compound upon narrow-band UV irradiation was also investigated. Identification of ketene species in the spectra of the irradiated matrixes suggests the occurrence of a ring-opening reaction, which in the xenon matrix occurs concomitantly with the conformational isomerization of tyramine.

Abstract
Aromatic azo compounds have a wide range of industrial applications as dyes in optical and color-changing materials and can also be exploited in the design of new photodynamic molecular systems. The azo derivative 1-(cyclopropyl)diazo-2-naphthol was isolated in low-temperature cryogenic matrices, and its molecular structure, tautomeric equilibrium, and photochemical transformations were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Only azo-enol forms having the OH group involved in a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond, forming a six-membered ring with the azo group, were found experimentally. Irradiation with a narrowband source in the near-UV range generates different rotameric and tautomeric azo-enol and keto-hydrazone forms that can be interconverted at different irradiation wavelengths.

Abstract
This article explores the extent to which insights gleaned from detailed studies of molecular photodissociations in the gas phase (i.e. under isolated molecule conditions) can inform our understanding of the corresponding photofragmentation processes in solution. Systems selected for comparison include a thiophenol (p-methylthiophenol), a thioanisole (p-methylthioanisole) and phenol, in vacuum and in cyclohexane solution. UV excitation in the gas phase results in RX-Y (X = O, S; Y = H, CH3) bond fission in all cases, but over timescales that vary by ~4 orders of magnitude - all of which behaviours can be rationalised on the basis of the relevant bound and dissociative excited state potential energy surfaces (PESs) accessed by UV photoexcitation, and of the conical intersections that facilitate radiationless transfer between these PESs. Time-resolved UV pump-broadband UV/visible probe and/or UV pump-broadband IR probe studies of the corresponding systems in cyclohexane solution reveal additional processes that are unique to the condensed phase. Thus, for example, the data clearly reveal evidence of (i) vibrational relaxation of the photoexcited molecules prior to their dissociation and of the radical fragments formed upon X-Y bond fission, and (ii) geminate recombination of the RX and Y products (leading to reformation of the ground state parent and/or isomeric adducts). Nonetheless, the data also show that, in each case, the characteristics (and the timescale) of the initial bond fission process that occurs under isolated molecule conditions are barely changed by the presence of a weakly interacting solvent like cyclohexane. These condensed phase studies are then extended to an ether analogue of phenol (allyl phenyl ether), wherein UV photo-induced RO-allyl bond fission constitutes the first step of a photo-Claisen rearrangement.
