Abstract
Iron and cobalt-based oxides crystallizing in the spinel structure are efficient and affordable catalysts for the oxidation of organics, yet, the detailed understanding of their surface structure and reactivity is limited. To fill this gap, we have investigated the (001) surfaces of cobalt ferrite, CoFe2O4, with the A- and B-layer terminations using density functional theory (DFT/PBE0) and an embedded cluster model. We have considered the five-fold coordinated Co2+/3+ (Oh), two-fold coordinated Fe2+ (Td), and an oxygen vacancy, as active sites for the adsorption of water and short-chain alcohols: methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, in the low coverage regime. The adsorbates dissociate upon adsorption on the Fe sites whereas the adsorption is mainly molecular on Co. At oxygen vacancies, the adsorbates always dissociate, fill the vacancy and form (partially) hydroxylated surfaces. The computed vibrational spectra for the most stable configurations are compared with results from diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.

Abstract
High-efficiency utilization of CO2 facilitates the reduction of CO2 concentration in the global atmosphere and hence the alleviation of the greenhouse effect. The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to produce value-added chemicals exhibits attractive prospects by potentially building energy recycling loops. Particularly, methanol is one of the practically important objective products, and the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to synthesize methanol has been extensively studied. In this review, we focus on some basic concepts on CO2 activation, the recent research advances in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, the development of high-performance catalysts, and microscopic insight into the reaction mechanisms. Finally, some thinking on the present research and possible future trend is presented.

Abstract
The adsorption and reactions of CH3OH on nonpolar mixed-terminated ZnO(101[combining macron]0), polar O-ZnO(0001[combining macron]) and Zn-ZnO(0001) surfaces have been studied systematically using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) in conjunction with temperature programmed desorption (TPD). For all three ZnO surfaces, exposure to methanol at room temperature leads to (partially) dissociative adsorption resulting in the formation of hydroxyl and methoxy species. Upon heating to higher temperatures, the dissociated and intact methanol species on ZnO(101[combining macron]0) predominantly undergo molecular desorption releasing CH3OH at 370 and 440 K. The Zn-O dimer vacancies are responsible for the decomposition of a small fraction of methanol yielding H2, CH2O and CO at 540 and 565 K. The interaction of methanol with polar O-ZnO and Zn-ZnO surfaces is dominated by thermal decomposition of CH3OH to produce CH2O, H2, CO, CO2 and H2O at elevated temperatures. The high chemical reactivity of both polar surfaces is related to the high abundance of different types of surface defects formed via massive restructuring. Importantly, the reconstructed Zn-ZnO surface exhibits high selectivity for hydrogen production at 520 K, which was not observed for the polar O-ZnO surface. The HREELS data revealed that this low-temperature hydrogen evolution on Zn-ZnO results from methoxy oxidation to a formate species occurring at O-terminated step-edge sites.

Abstract
Catalytic conversion of CO2 into useful chemicals is an attractive alternative to expensive physical carbon sequestration methods. However, this approach is challenging because current chemical conversion methods employ high temperatures or pressures, thereby increasing cost and potentially leading to net carbon positive processes. In this paper, we examine the interface properties of ZnO(112̅0)/PbTiO3 and its surface interaction with CO2, CO and O. We show that the stoichiometry of the stable interface is dependent on the substrate polarization and can be controlled by changing the growth conditions. Using a model reaction, we demonstrate that a dynamically tuned catalysis scheme could enable significantly lower-energy approaches for CO2 conversion.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe present a calculation of vibrational frequencies of formate on the AuPt(111) surface alloy including full anharmonicity and coupling of all six intramolecular degrees of freedom. This species is a key intermediate in methanol oxidation on this material. We use a modified version of the method of Manzhos and Carrington to compute the spectrum directly from a small number (<10,000) of DFT single-point energies, bypassing the construction of a potential energy surface. This is the first such calculation for a 4-atomic species at a surface. The spectrum is obtained using rectangular collocation and a small basis set of parameterized Hermite functions. The achievable accuracy of the order of several cm-1 corresponds to the typical experimental resolution. Using normal coordinates makes the equations simple and general and easily applicable to other systems. This calculation is doable on a PC. We predict that anharmonicity and coupling lower the fundamental frequencies by dozens of cm-1, which could affect species assignment.
