NMR investigation of orientationally disordered NaCN and KCN

NMR spectroscopy probes microstructure, dynamics and doping of metal halide perovskites

Solid-state magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique to probe atomic-level microstructure and structural dynamics in metal halide perovskites. It can be used to measure dopant incorporation, phase segregation, halide mixing, decomposition pathways, passivation mechanisms, short-range and long-range dynamics, and other local properties. This Review describes practical aspects of recording solid-state NMR data on halide perovskites and how these afford unique insights into new compositions, dopants and passivation agents. We discuss the applicability, feasibility and limitations of ¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁵N, ¹⁴N, ¹³³Cs, ⁸⁷Rb, ³⁹K, ²⁰⁷Pb, ¹¹⁹Sn, ¹¹³Cd, ²⁰⁹Bi, ¹¹⁵In, ¹⁹F and ²H NMR in typical experimental scenarios. We highlight the pivotal complementary role of solid-state mechanosynthesis, which enables highly sensitive NMR studies by providing large quantities of high-purity materials of arbitrary complexity and of chemical shifts calculated using density functional theory. We examine the broader impact of solid-state NMR on materials research and how its evolution over seven decades has benefitted structural studies of contemporary materials such as halide perovskites. Finally, we summarize some of the open questions in perovskite optoelectronics that could be addressed using solid-state NMR. We, thereby, hope to stimulate wider use of this technique in materials and optoelectronics research.

Insight into the structure of silver cyanide from (13)C and (15)N solid-state NMR spectroscopy

The structure of silver cyanide has been investigated by solid-state multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 NMR spectra of magic-angle-spinning (MAS) and stationary powder samples of isotopically enriched Ag(13)CN, Ag(13)C(15)N, and AgC(15)N have been acquired at the external applied magnetic field strengths 4.7, 7.05, and 9.4 T. Axially symmetric carbon and nitrogen chemical shift (CS) tensors provide evidence for linearity of the polymeric (-Ag-CN-)(n)() chains. A two-site model is required to successfully simulate the (13)C MAS NMR line shape, which is dominated by indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling between (109/107)Ag and (13)C nuclei. In combination with relativistic zeroth-order regular approximation density functional theory (ZORA-DFT) calculations on model AgCN fragments, the (13)C MAS NMR results show that 30 +/- 10% of the silver sites are disordered, that is, either -NC-Ag-CN- or -CN-Ag-NC-, and 70 +/- 10% of the silver sites are ordered, that is, -NC-Ag-NC-. Effective dipolar coupling data extracted from (13)C NMR spectra of stationary samples allow an upper limit of 1.194 A to be placed on the carbon-nitrogen internuclear distance. After incorporation of the effects of anisotropic indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling and motional averaging on the NMR-derived distance, a corrected value of r(CN) = 1.16 +/- 0.03 A is obtained. This work provides an example of the type of information which may be obtained from solid-state NMR studies of disordered materials and how such information may complement that available from diffraction studies.

A new mechanism for spin--lattice relaxation of heavy nuclei in the solid state: 207Pb relaxation in lead nitrate

A detailed investigation of the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, for 207Pb in solid lead nitrate has been undertaken in an effort to understand the mechanism of relaxation. The results show that the 207Pb T1 is independent of magnetic field strength and inversely proportional to the square of the temperature. These are signatures of relaxation by a spin-phonon Raman scattering mechanism. Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in solid lead salts is more efficient for sites with smaller magnetic shielding anisotropy. A coupling mechanism is proposed whereby phonons create a local magnetic field by modulating the valence electron shell motion relative to the nuclear/electron core. Literature data suggest that spin-phonon scattering is a common relaxation pathway for other spin-1/2 heavy nuclei in solids.
