The effect of dynamics on band shapes of hydrogen bonded complexes in solution

Anharmonic dynamics of intramolecular hydrogen bonds driven by DNA breathing

We study the effects of the anharmonic strand-separation dynamics of double-stranded DNA on the infrared spectra of the intramolecular base-pairing hydrogen bonds. Using the extended Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois model for the DNA breathing dynamics coupled with the Lippincott-Schroeder potential for N-H· · ·N and N-H· · ·O hydrogen bonding, we identify a high-frequency (~96 THz) feature in the infrared spectra. We show that this sharp peak arises as a result of the anharmonic base-pair breathing dynamics of DNA. In addition, we study the effects of friction on the infrared spectra. For higher temperatures (~300 K), where the anharmonicity of DNA dynamics is pronounced, the high-frequency peak is always present irrespective of the friction strength.

Relaxation and anharmonic couplings of the O-H stretching vibration of asymmetric strongly hydrogen-bonded complexes

We present infrared transient grating measurements of complexes of formic acid with pyridine and pyrazine at four excitation frequencies within the broad proton-stretching band. These experiments investigate the mechanism of the line broadening of the O-H stretching vibration. The transients show coherent oscillations that decay within a few hundred femtoseconds and population relaxation on two time scales. We fit the data using a simple model of three coupled oscillators that relax via sequential kinetics through an intermediate state. Based on this model, we conclude that the coherent oscillations result from superpositions of Fermi-resonance-coupled states involving formic acid overtone and combination states.

Hydrogen-bonded acetic acid dimers: Anharmonic coupling and linear infrared spectra studied with density-functional theory

Anharmonic vibrational force field calculations provide a quantitative understanding of the width and substructure of the linear IR-absorption spectrum of the O-H stretching mode in acetic acid dimers (CH3-COOH)2 and (CD3-COOH)2. Anharmonic coupling of the high-frequency upsilon(OH) mode to fingerprint and low-frequency modes is included resulting in 11- and 9-dimensional vibrational Hamiltonians. A sixth-order force field covering up to three-body interactions is used. Force constants are calculated by fitting one-dimensional potential-energy surfaces and a finite difference procedure applying density-functional theory [Becke 3 Lee-Yang-Parr 6-311+G(d,p)]. It is demonstrated that both anharmonic coupling to low-frequency modes as well as Fermi resonance coupling with fingerprint modes are important mechanisms explaining the line shape of the O-H stretching IR-absorption band in acetic acid dimers.
