Abstract
De novo design of self-assembled materials hinges upon our ability to relate macroscopic properties to individual building blocks, thus characterizing in such supramolecular architectures a wide range of observables at varied time/length scales. This work demonstrates that quantum mechanical derived force fields (QMD-FFs) do satisfy this requisite and, most importantly, do so in a predictive manner. To this end, a specific FF, built solely based on the knowledge of the target molecular structure, is employed to reproduce the spontaneous transition to an ordered liquid crystal phase. The simulations deliver a multiscale portrait of such self-assembly processes, where conformational changes within the individual building blocks are intertwined with a 200 ns ensemble reorganization. The extensive characterization provided not only is in quantitative agreement with the experiment but also connects the time/length scales at which it was performed. Realizing QMD-FF predictive power and unmatched accuracy stands as an important leap forward for the bottom-up design of advanced supramolecular materials.

Abstract
The problem of predicting structural and dynamic behavior associated with thin smectic films, both deposited on a solid surface or stretched over an opening, when the temperature is slowly increased above the bulk transition temperature towards either the nematic or isotropic phases, remains an interesting one in the physics of condensed matter. A useful route in studies of structural and optical properties of thin smectic films is provided by a combination of statistical–mechanical theories, hydrodynamics of liquid crystal phases, and optical and calorimetric techniques. We believe that this review shows some useful routes not only for the further examining of the validity of a theoretical description of thin smectic films, both deposited on a solid surface or stretched over an opening, but also for analyzing their structural, optical, and dynamic properties.

Abstract
The long time scale orientational relaxation of nematogens in the isotropic phase is associated with the randomization of pseudonematic domains, which have a correlation length that grows as the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition temperature is approached from above. Here we begin to address the fast dynamics of the nematogen molecules within the domains using two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) vibrational echo experiments. The problems of performing ultrafast IR experiments in pure liquids are discussed, and solutions are presented. In addition, the issue of short vibrational lifetimes, which limit the ability of 2D IR experiments to examine dynamics over a wide range of times, is addressed. The experiments were performed on the nematogen 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), with the CN stretch initially used as the vibrational probe. Although the CN stretch has a small transition dipole, because the sample is a pure liquid it is necessary to use an exceedingly thin sample to perform the experiments. The small sample volume leads to massive heating effects that distort the results. In addition, the high concentration in the pure liquid can result in vibrational excitation transfer that interferes with the measurements of structural dynamics, and the CN vibrational lifetime is very short (3.6 ps). These problems were overcome by performing the experiments on the natural-abundance (13)CN stretch (5(13)CB), which greatly reduced the absorbance, eliminating the heating problems; also, this stretch has a longer lifetime (7.9 ps). Experiments were also performed on benzonitrile, which showed that the heating problems associated with pure liquids are not unique to 5CB. Again, the problems were eliminated by conducting measurements on the (13)CN stretch, which has an even longer lifetime (20.2 ps) compared with the (12)CN stretch (5.6 ps). Finally, to extend the range of the dynamical measurements, 4-pentyl-4'-thiocyanobiphenyl (5SCB) was synthesized and studied as a dilute solute in 5CB. The CN stretch of 5SCB has a vibrational lifetime of 103 ps, which permits dynamical measurements to 200 ps, revealing the full range of fast structural dynamics in the isotropic phase of 5CB. It is shown that the 5SCB probe reports essentially the same dynamics as 5(13)CB on the short time scale that is observable with the 5(13)CB vibrational probe.

Abstract
Using a united atom model, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (nCB) liquid crystal homologous series for at a constant reduced temperature in the nematic phase. To evaluate the rotational diffusion coefficient (RDC), the second- and fourth-rank order parameters (OP's) and correlation time were calculated from MD trajectories. We analyzed the rotational viscosity coefficient (RVC) by using the Nemtsov-Zakharov and Fialkowski methods based on statistical-mechanical approaches. The simulated RDC, RVC, and OP's were found to be reasonable when compared with previous theoretical and experimental data. These quantities were also calculated for the rigid core and alkyl chain segments separately for each mesogen, to take a closer look at the molecule tail-chain flexibility. The properties calculated for a rigid core were compared with those for an alkyl chain, and satisfactory results were obtained. Odd-even effects for RDF, RVC, and molecular ordering parameters were calculated for five mesogens.

Abstract
Atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of 4-n-pentyl 4'-cyano-biphenyl (5CB) have been performed, adopting a specific ab initio derived force field. Two state points in the nematic phase and three in the isotropic phase, as determined in a previous work, have been considered. At each state point, at least 10 ns have been produced, allowing us to accurately calculate single-molecule properties. In the isotropic phase, the values of the translational diffusion coefficient, and even more so the activation energy for the process, agree well with experimental data. Qualitatively, also the dynamic anisotropy of the nematic phase is correctly accounted for. Rotational diffusion coefficients, which describe spinning and tumbling motions, fall well within the range of experimental values. The reorientational dynamics of our model 5CB covers diverse time regimes. The longest one is strongly temperature dependent and characterized by a relaxation time in accord with experimental dielectric relaxation data. Shear viscosity and Landau-de Gennes relaxation times, typically collective variables, reproduce the experimental results very well in the isotropic phase. In the nematic phase, despite a large statistical uncertainty due to the extremely slow relaxation of the correlation functions involved, our simulation yields the correct relative order of the three experimental Miesowicz viscosities.

Abstract
The rotational diffusion constants D(perpendicular) and D(parallel), rotational viscosity coefficients gamma(i) (i=1,2), the orientational correlation times tau(L)mn, and the dielectric permittivities for nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) are investigated. gamma(i) are calculated by a combination of existing statistical-mechanical approach (SMA) and NMR relaxation theory, both based on a rotational diffusion model. In the rotational diffusion model, it is assumed that the reorientation of an individual molecule is a stochastic Brownian motion in a certain potential of mean torque. According to the SMA, gamma(i) are found to be a function of temperature, density, rotational diffusion constant for tumbling motions, and the orientational order parameters. The order parameters and rotational diffusion constant are obtained from an analysis of NMR measurements. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values of gamma(i) for 4-n-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8OCB) is obtained. The orientational correlation times, and the longitudinal and transverse components of the real chi'(j)(omega) and imaginary chi"(j)(omega) (j= parallel, perpendicular) parts of the complex susceptibility tensor for 8OCB molecules in the nematic phase are also obtained.

Abstract
The rotational viscosity coefficient gamma(1) of 4-n-pentyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl in the nematic phase is investigated by combination of existing statistical-mechanical approaches (SMAs), based on a rotational diffusion model and computer simulation technique. The SMAs rest on a model in which it is assumed that the reorientation of an individual molecule is a stochastic Brownian motion in a certain potential of mean torque. According to the SMAs, gamma(1) is found to be a function of temperature, density, rotational diffusion coefficient, and a number of order parameters (OPs). The diffusion coefficient and the OPs were obtained from an analysis of a trajectory generated in a molecular dynamics simulation using realistic atom-atom interactions. In addition, a set of experimentally determined diffusion coefficients and OPs was used for evaluation of gamma(1). Reasonable agreement between calculated and experimental values of gamma(1) is obtained. It is shown that near the clearing point gamma(1) is proportional to (-)P22, where (-)P2 is the second-rank OP. This limiting value of gamma(1) is in agreement with mean-field theory.
