Abstract
Using four-component (4c) relativistic spinors, we present a computationally economical relativistic ab initio method for molecular systems employing our recently proposed second-order state-specific multireference perturbation theory (SSMRPT) incorporating the improved virtual orbital-complete active space configuration interaction (IVO-CASCI) reference wavefunction. The resulting method, 4c-IVO-SSMRPT [calculate one state at a time] is tested in pilot calculations on the homonuclear dimers including Li(2), Na(2), K(2), Rb(2), F(2), Cl(2), and Br(2) through the computations of the ground state potential energy curves (PECs). As SSMRPT curbs intruder effects, 4c-IVO-SSMRPT is numerically stable. To our knowledge, the SSMRPT in the 4c relativistic framework has not been explored in the past. Selective spectroscopic constants that are closely related to the correct shape and accuracy of the energy surfaces have been extracted from the computed PECs. For the halogen molecules, a relativistic destabilization of the bond has been found. Relativistic and electron correlation effects need to be incorporated to get reliable estimates. Our results are in good accordance with reference theoretical and experimental data which manifests the computational accuracy and efficiency of the new 4c-IVO-SSMRPT method. The method opens for an improved description of MR systems containing heavy elements. The inexpensiveness of IVO-CASCI makes 4c-IVO-SSMRPT method promising for studies on large systems of heavy elements.

Abstract
RATIONALE The very small clusters of the type K(n)F are of particular importance since their first ionization energies (IEs) are lower than those of the alkali metal atoms. Theoretical calculation has demonstrated that this kind of cluster represents a potential 'building block' for cluster-assembly materials with unique structural, electronic, optical, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties. To date, however, there have been no experimental results on the IEs of K(n)F (n >2) clusters. METHOD K(n)F (n = 2-6) clusters were produced by the evaporation of a solid potassium fluoride salt using a modified thermal ionization source of modified design, and mass selected by a magnetic sector mass spectrometer where their IEs were determined. RESULTS Clusters K(n)F (n = 3-6) were detected for the first time. The order of the ion intensities was K(2)F(+)> > K(4)F(+)> > K(3)F(+)K(6)F(+)> K(5)F(+). The determined IEs were 3.99 ± 0.20 eV for K(2)F, 4.16 ± 0.20 eV for K(3)F, 4.27 ± 0.20 eV for K(4)F, 4.22 ± 0.20 eV for K(5)F, and 4.31 ± 0.20 eV for K(6)F. The IEs of K(n)F increase slightly with the increase in potassium atom number from 2 to 6. We also observed that the presence of a fluorine atom leads to increasing ionization energy of bare metal potassium clusters. CONCLUSIONS The modified thermal ionization source provides an efficient way of obtaining the fluorine-doped potassium clusters. These results also present experimental proof that K(n)F (n = 2-6) clusters belong to the group of 'superalkali' species.

Abstract
Equilibrium geometries, stabilities, and electronic properties of TinAl (n = 1-13) clusters have been studied by using density-functional theory with local spin density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. The ground-state structures of TinAl clusters have been obtained. The resulting geometries show that the aluminum atom remains on the surface of clusters for n < 9, but is slowly getting trapped beyond n = 9, meanwhile, the Al atom exhibits a valent transition from monovalent to trivalent. The geometric effects and electronic effects clearly demonstrate the Ti4Al cluster to be endowed with special stability. The studies on the bonds indicate the change from ionic to metalliclike.

Abstract
Helium nanodroplet isolation has been applied to agglomerate alkali clusters at temperatures of 380 mK. The very weak binding to the surface of the droplets allows a selection of only weakly bound, high-spin states. Here we show that larger clusters of alkali atoms in high-spin states can be formed. The lack of strong bonds from pairing electrons makes these systems nonmetallic, van der Waals-like complexes of metal atoms. We find that sodium and potassium readily form such clusters containing up to 25 atoms. In contrast, this process is suppressed for rubidium and cesium. Apparently, for these heavy alkalis, larger high-spin aggregates are not stable and depolarize spontaneously upon cluster formation.
