Abstract
High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled C5(-) clusters are reported using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy. We resolve vibronic transitions to the ν2 stretching mode and multiply excited ν5, ν6, and ν7 bending modes of neutral C5 with significantly higher accuracy than previous experiments. Weak transitions to Franck-Condon (FC) forbidden singly excited bending modes are made possible by Herzberg-Teller coupling between electronic states of the neutral cluster. In addition, we resolve vibrational fine structure corresponding to different angular momentum states of multiply excited bending modes. The observation of this multiplet structure, some of which is FC forbidden, is attributed to Renner-Teller coupling between vibrational levels in the C5(-) ground electronic state.

Abstract
A high yield of carbon chains has been produced by the laser ablation of carbon rods having (13)C enrichment. FTIR spectroscopy of these molecules trapped in solid Ar has resulted in the identification of two new combination bands for linear C(5) and C(9). The (ν(1) + ν(4)) combination band of linear C(5) has been observed at 3388.8 cm(-1), and comparison of (13)C isotopic shift measurements with the predictions of density functional theory calculations (DFT) at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level makes possible the assignment of the ν(1)(σ(g)(+)) stretching fundamental at 1946 cm(-1). Similarly, the observation of the (ν(2) + ν(7)) combination band of linear C(9) at 3471.8 cm(-1) enables the assignment of the ν(2)(σ(g)(+)) stretching fundamental at 1871 cm(-1). The third and weakest of the infrared stretching fundamentals of linear C(7), the ν(6)(σ(u)(+)) fundamental at 1100.1 cm(-1), has also been assigned.

Abstract
Anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has become one of the most versatile techniques in chemical physics. This article briefly reviews the history of anion PES and some of its applications. It describes efforts to improve the resolution of this technique, including anion zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) and the recently developed method of slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI). Applications of SEVI to studies of vibronic coupling in open-shell systems and the spectroscopy of prereactive van der Waals complexes are then discussed.
