Abstract
C4F7N is a promising candidate for the replacement of sulfur hexafluoride as an insulating medium, and it is important to understand the chemical changes initiated in the molecule by collision with free electrons, specifically the formation of neutral fragments. The first step of neutral fragmentation is electronic excitation, yet neither the absorption spectrum in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region nor the electron energy loss spectrum have previously been reported. Here, we experimentally probed the excited states by VUV photoabsorption spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). We found that the distribution of states populated upon electron impact with low-energy electrons is significantly different from that following photoabsorption. This difference was confirmed and interpreted with ab initio modeling of both VUV and EELS spectra. We propose here a new computational protocol for the simulation of EELS spectra combining the Born approximation with approximate forms of correlated wave functions, which allows us to calculate the (usually very expensive) scattering cross sections at a cost similar to the calculation of oscillator strengths. Finally, we perform semi-classical non-adiabatic dynamics simulations to investigate the possible neutral fragments of the molecule formed through electron-induced neutral dissociation. We show that the product distribution is highly non-statistical.

Abstract
This paper presents a study of a CH4-CO2 plasma-reforming process carried out in a high power density (5-50 W/cm3), using toroidal transformer-coupled plasma, and operated at low pressure (0.2-0.7 Torr). Using the intermediate between a thermal and nonthermal plasma (electron density, ne ≈ 3 × 1012 cm-3 and a maximum gas temperature of ∼4000-6000 K along the center line), the low-pressure study provides a unique set of conditions to investigate reaction mechanisms, where three-body reactions can be ignored. Reactive species in the plasma were identified by optical emission spectroscopy. End products of the reforming process were measured by mass spectrometry. Quite high conversions of CO2 and CH4 were found (90%), with selectivities for CO and H2 of 80% at 300 sccm feed gas flow rate in a 0.5 Torr plasma, with a mole ratio CO2-CH4 of 1:1. A detailed reaction mechanism is presented, taking into account the combined detection of reactive intermediates in the plasma (H, O, CH, and C2) and stable product downstream.

Abstract
Non-equilibrium vibrational distributions and electron energy distributions of CO in nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) discharges and afterglows have been determined from a coupled solution of the time dependent Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution function (eedf) of free electrons and the master equations for the vibrational distribution function (vdf) of CO and the electronic excited states of CO and O and C atoms. Emphasis is given to the role of dissociative electron attachment (DEA) from vibrationally excited states in affecting the eedf and vdf under extreme conditions, i.e., an optically thick plasma with quenching processes involving the electronic excited states, populated by a sequence of discharge pulses and corresponding afterglows. In particular, the quenching process of the a3Π electronic state of CO determines a pumping of vibrational quanta in the ground state, which in turn largely modifies the CO vdf promoting the activation of DEA process. DEA rate coefficients have been obtained by using a complete set of vibrational (v) dependent cross sections through the CO -(X 2Π) channel and by using the experimental v = 0 cross section of Rapp and Briglia, which should include the contribution of other CO - resonant states. The importance of the last contribution has been also estimated by using a scaling law to extend the v = 0 cross section over all the vibrational ladder of CO. In particular, this mechanism becomes competitive with the other reactive channels for very short inter-pulse delay times, i.e., the t id = 1 μs, being less important for longer inter-pulse delay times, i.e., the t id = 25 μs.

Abstract
The stability of thin films of lead zirco-titanate (PZT) under intense soft X-ray beams is investigated by time-resolved photoelectron spectromicroscopy with a lateral resolution below 1 micrometer. Surface dissociation is observed when samples are irradiated with intense (5 × 1023 photons per s per m2) soft X-rays, with promotion of reduced lead on the surface. On areas exhibiting outwards polarization (P(+)), the reduced lead is formed at the expense of P(+)-PZT. On areas presenting co-existing P(+) states with areas without out-of-plane polarization (P(0)), the reduced lead is formed at the expense of the P(0)-PZT component, while the P(+)-PZT remains constant. The main dissociation mechanism was found to be triggered by 'hot' electrons in the conduction band, with energies exceeding the surface dissociation energies. Dissociation occurs basically when the electron affinity is larger than the dissociation energy of PbO (for P(+) areas) or PbO- (for P(0) areas). Such mechanisms may be adapted for dissociation of other molecules on surfaces of ferroelectric thin films or for quantifying the stability of ferroelectric surfaces interacting with other radiation, with applications in the fields of photocatalysis or photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
The production and guiding of ground state and metastable C, N, and O atoms in a two-meter-long, bent magnetic guide are described. Pure beams of metastable He((3)S1) and Ne((3)P2), and of ground state N((4)S3/2) and O((3)P2) are obtained using an Even-Lavie valve paired with a dielectric barrier discharge or electron bombardment source. Under these conditions no electronically excited C, N, or O atoms are observed at the exit of the guide. A general valve with electron impact excitation creates, in addition to ground state atoms, electronically excited C((3)P2; (1)D2) and N((2)D5/2; (2)P3/2) species. The two experimental conditions are complimentary, demonstrating the usefulness of a magnetic guide in crossed or merged beam experiments such as those described in Henson et al. [Science 338, 234 (2012)] and Jankunas et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 244302 (2014)].
