Abstract
We report time-domain rotational spectroscopy of the argon dimer, Ar2, by implementing time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging of rotational wave packets. The rotational wave packets are created in Ar2 with a linearly polarized, nonresonant, ultrashort laser pulse, and their spatiotemporal evolution is fully characterized by measuring angular distribution of the fragmented Ar+ promptly ejected from Ar22+ generated by the more intense probe pulse. The pump-probe measurements have been carried out up to a delay time of 16 ns. The alignment parameters, derived from the observed images, exhibit periodic oscillation lasting for more than 15 ns. The pure rotational spectrum of Ar2 is obtained by Fourier transformation of the time traces of the alignment parameters. The frequency resolution in the spectrum is about 90 MHz, the highest ever achieved for Ar2. The rotational constant and the centrifugal distortion constant are determined with much improved precision than the previous experimental results: B0 = 1.72713 ± 0.00009 GHz and D0 = 0.0310 ± 0.0005 MHz. The present B0 value does not match within the quoted experimental uncertainty with that from the VUV spectroscopy, so far accepted as an experimental reference to assess theories. The present improved constants would stand as new references to calibrate state-of-the-art theoretical investigations and an indispensable experimental source for the construction of an accurate empirical intermolecular potential.

Abstract
The structures and binding topologies of two binary van der Waals complexes 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP)···Ne and ···Ar were investigated. The rotational spectra of these two complexes including several isotopic species containing 20Ne, 22Ne, 40Ar, 13C, and hydroxyl D were measured using a chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer and a cavity-based Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. While HFIP was shown to exist in both the gauche and trans configurations based on previous reports, the rare gas atom is predicted to attach to HFIP in several different binding topologies, leading to a total of nine possible structural isomers for each complex. Only one isomer was detected for each species, and it corresponds to the most stable one predicted, based on the comparison of the experimental rotational constants and electric dipole moment components with the theoretical predictions and on the isotopic data. We applied quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and electrostatic potential calculations to examine the different rare gas binding sites and to explore the nature of the interactions in these two complexes and several previously reported alcohol···Ar complexes. The effects of fluorination are also discussed by comparison with the binary complexes of isopropanol···Ne and ···Ar.

Abstract
We calculate the rovibrational bound levels with total angular momentum J = 0, 1 of 40Ar284Kr trimer using the slow variable discretization method combined with the finite-element method-discrete variable representation basis. The statistical distributions of the rovibrational levels for JΠ=0e, 1e, and 1o symmetries are presented and the effects of the Axilrod-Teller potential term are considered. For the 0e and 1e symmetries, the Axilrod-Teller term makes the spectra become fully chaotic. However, for the 1o symmetry, statistical properties depend mainly on the coupling between K = 0 and K = 1 and the Axilrod-Teller term has a small effect.

Abstract
In this work we report an ab initio intermolecular potential energy surface and theoretical spectroscopic studies for Xe-H(2)O complex. The ab initio energies are calculated with CCSD(T) method and large basis sets (aug-cc-pVQZ for H and O and aug-cc-pVQZ-PP for Xe) augmented by a {3s3p2d2f1g} set of bond functions. This potential energy surface has a global minimum corresponding to a planar and nearly linear hydrogen bonded configuration with a well depth of 192.5 cm(-1) at intermolecular distance of 4.0 A, which is consistent with the previous determined potential by Wen and Jager [J. Phys. Chem. A 110, 7560 (2006)]. The bound state calculations have been performed for the complex by approximating the water molecule as a rigid rotor. The theoretical rotational transition frequencies, isotopic shifts, nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, and structure parameters are in good agreement with the experimental observed values. The wavefunctions are analyzed to understand the dynamics of the ground and the first excited states.

Abstract
Scattering data, measured for rare gas-rare gas systems under high angular and energy resolution conditions, have been used to probe the reliability of a recently proposed interaction potential function, which involves only one additional parameter with respect to the venerable Lennard-Jones (LJ) model and is hence called Improved Lennard-Jones (ILJ). The ILJ potential eliminates most of the inadequacies at short- and long-range of the LJ model. Further reliability tests have been performed by comparing calculated vibrational spacings with experimental values and calculated interaction energies at short-range with those obtained from the inversion of gaseous transport properties. The analysis, extended also to systems involving ions, suggests that the ILJ potential model can be used to estimate the behavior of unknown systems and can help to assess the different role of the leading interaction components. Moreover, due to its simple formulation, the physically reliable ILJ model appears to be particularly useful for molecular dynamics simulations of both neutral and ionic systems.

Abstract
An ab initio potential energy surface of the Xe-NH(3) van der Waals complex was constructed at the coupled cluster level of theory with single, double, and pertubatively included triple excitations. The small-core pseudopotential and augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple-zeta basis set was used for the Xe atom and Dunning's augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence triple-zeta basis set for the other atoms. The basis sets were supplemented with midbond functions. Rotational spectra of the Xe-NH(3) van der Waals complex were recorded using a pulsed-nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. Rotational transitions within two internal rotor states, namely, the Sigma0(0) and Pi1(1) (lower) states, were measured and assigned to the Xe-(14)NH(3) and Xe-(15)NH(3) isotopologues. For the deuterated isotopologues, only the Sigma0(0) states were observed. Two inversion components were observed for each state except for the "s" component of the Sigma0(0) state of the Xe-(14)NH(3) and Xe-(15)NH(3) isotopologues, which has a spin statistical weight of zero. Nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structures arising from the (14)N (nuclear spin angular momentum quantum number I=1) and (131)Xe (I=32) nuclei were detected and analyzed. The observed spectra suggest that the Pi1(1) (lower) state has lower energy than the unobserved Sigma1(1) state, in contrast to the case of Ar-NH(3).

Abstract
Rotational spectra of the Ne-Xe-NH3 van der Waals trimer were recorded using a pulsed-nozzle, Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. Both a- and b-type transitions of eight isotopologues, namely 20Ne-132Xe-14NH3, 20Ne-129Xe-14NH3, 20Ne-132Xe-15NH3, 20Ne-129Xe-15NH3, 20Ne-131Xe-15NH3, 22Ne-132Xe-15NH3, 22Ne-129Xe-15NH3, and 22Ne-131Xe-15NH3 were measured and assigned. Nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structures arising from the 14N (nuclear spin quantum number I = 1) and 131Xe (I = 3/2) nuclei were detected and analyzed. The determined rotational constants were used to fit structural parameters. A harmonic force field analysis was performed based on centrifugal distortion constants to extract information about vibrational motions of the complex. A comparison of van der Waals bond lengths and stretching force constants between the Ne-Xe-NH3 trimer and the corresponding dimers indicates that non-additive three-body effects are present in the trimer system. Analyses of the 14N and 131Xe nuclear quadrupole coupling constants suggest that the NH3 unit undergoes nearly free internal rotation within the complex and that the presence of Ne has little effect on the orientation of NH3 with respect to the Xe atom.

Abstract
XeCu covalent bonding has been found in the complexes XeCuF and XeCuCl. The molecules were characterized by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, supported by MP2 ab initio calculations. The complexes were prepared by laser ablation of Cu in the presence of Xe and SF(6) or Cl(2) and stabilized in supersonic jets of Ar. The rotational constants and centrifugal distortion constants show the XeCu bonds to be short and rigid. The (131)Xe, Cu, and Cl nuclear quadrupole coupling constants indicate major redistributions of the electron densities of Xe and CuF or CuCl on complex formation which cannot be accounted for by simple electrostatic effects. The MP2 calculations corroborate the XeCu bond lengths and predict XeCu dissociation energies approximately 50-60 kJ mol(-)(1). The latter cannot be accounted for in terms of induction energies. The MP2 calculations also predict valence molecular orbitals with significant shared electron density between Xe and Cu and negative local energy densities at the XeCu bond critical points. All evidence is consistent with XeCu covalent bonding.

Abstract
An ab initio potential-energy surface of the Xe-CH4 van der Waals complex was constructed at the coupled cluster level of theory with single, double, and perturbatively included triple excitations. The recently developed small-core pseudopotential and augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple-zeta basis set was used for the xenon atom and Dunning's augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence triple-zeta basis set for the other atoms. The basis sets were supplemented with bond functions. Dipole moments were also calculated at various configurations. Rotational spectra of the Xe-CH4 van der Waals complex were recorded using a pulsed-nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The isotopomers studied include those of CH4,13CH4,CD4,CH3D, and CHD3 with the five most abundant Xe isotopes. Transitions within three internal rotor states, namely, the j=0,K=0; j=1,K=0; and j=2,K=1 states, were observed and assigned. Nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structures due to the presence of 131Xe(I=3/2) were detected and analyzed. It was found that the j=1,K=0 state is perturbed by a Coriolis interaction with a nearby j=1,K=1 state. For isotopomers containing CH3D and CHD3, the j=2 states are no longer metastable and could not be observed. The spectroscopic results were used to derive structural and dynamical information of the Xe-CH4 complex.

Abstract
Rotational transitions for the Xe-N2 complex were measured in the frequency region from 4 to 18 GHz using a pulsed-nozzle Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer. Twelve (four) a-type transitions were recorded for the 132Xe-14N2 and 129Xe-14N2 (131Xe-15N)) isotopomers. In addition, the nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structures due to the presence of the 14N (nuclear-spin quantum number I=1) and 131Xe (I=32) nuclei were detected and analyzed. Two ab initio potential-energy surfaces were calculated at the coupled-cluster level of theory with single, double, and pertubatively included triple excitations. Dunning's augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence triple-zeta basis set was used for the nitrogen atoms. For the first surface, a well-tempered basis set with additional polarization functions was used for the Xe atom; for the second surface, a newly developed augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quintuple-zeta basis set employing small-core relativistic pseudopotentials was used for the Xe atom. The basis sets were supplemented with bond functions for the van der Waals bond. The counterpoise correction was applied to reduce the basis-set superposition error. The resulting two surfaces both have a single minimum at a T-shaped geometry, with well depths of 122.4 and 119.3 cm(-1), respectively. Bound-state energies supported by the potential-energy surface were determined. The quality of the ab initio potential-energy surfaces was evaluated by comparison of the experimental transition frequencies and rotational and centrifugal distortion constants with those derived from the bound-state energies. A scaled potential-energy surface was obtained which has excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract
Rotational spectra of KrCuF and KrCuCl have been measured in the frequency range 8-18 GHz, using a pulsed jet cavity Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The molecules were prepared by ablating Cu metal with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) and allowing the plasma to react with appropriate precursors (Kr plus SF(6) or Cl(2)) contained in the backing gas of the jet (Ar or Kr). Rotational constants, internuclear distances, vibration frequencies, and (83)Kr, Cu, and Cl nuclear quadrupole coupling constants have all been evaluated. The Kr-Cu bonds are short and the complexes are rigid. The (83)Kr coupling constant of KrCuF is large (128.8 MHz). The Cu nuclear quadrupole coupling constants differ radically from those of uncomplexed CuF and CuCl molecules. The results are supported by those of ab initio calculations, which have also yielded Mulliken populations, MOLDEN plots of valence molecular orbitals and Laplace concentrations, and electron localization functions. The results are consistent with those reported earlier for other noble gas-noble metal halide complexes. The results have been used to assess the nature of the bonding in the complexes and have produced good evidence for weak noble gas-noble metal chemical bonding.

Abstract
Microwave spectra of Ar-(28)SiH(4), Ar-(29)SiH(4), Ar-(30)SiH(4), and Ar-(28)SiD(4) were recorded using a pulsed molecular beam Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The K = 0 and K = 1 components of the J = 3 <-- 2 through the J = 7 <-- 6 transitions were measured and assigned in the 9-24 GHz region. For the primary (28)Si isotopic species, Ar-(28)SiH(4) and Ar-(28)SiD(4), a K = 0, A symmetry, a K = 0, F symmetry, a doubly degenerate K = 1, E symmetry, and an l/K-doubled, K = 1, F symmetry rotational progression are observed at the approximately 1 K rotational temperature of the supersonic expansion. The rotational constants for the K = 0, A state for Ar-(28)SiH(4) and Ar-(28)SiD(4) are B = 1700.40624(9) MHz and 1630.687073(22) MHz and the centrifugal distortion constants are D(J) = 29.089(3) and 20.0198(8) kHz and H(J) = -1.91(3) and -0.851(8) Hz, respectively, where type A expanded uncertainties with a coverage factor, k = 3, are given here and elsewhere. The values of the rotational constants for the K = 0, A, and F states and for the K = 1, E state are in good agreement with the infrared-determined values for Ar-(28)SiH(4). The measured linear Stark effect of the E-state transitions was analyzed to give a dipole moment of 9.24(8) x 10(-32) C. m [0.0277(2) D]. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract
Radiofrequency transitions within K = 2 asymmetry doublets have been observed for the CO2-CO van der Waals complex. A Stark effect measurement on the J = 2, K = 2 transition provides an electric dipole moment of µ = 0.2493(1) D. Combining this result with the permanent moment of CO, µCO = 0.1098 D, gives a change of moment on complex formation of Deltaµ = 0.140 D. The sign of Deltaµ is such that the CO end of the complex is more positive than CO2. The origin of Deltaµ should not be attributed to any single mechanism, and several different contributions to Deltaµ are discussed. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
