Abstract
Full dimensional analytical fits of the coupled potential energy surfaces for the three lower singlet and triplet adiabatic states of H are developed, providing analytic derivatives and non-adiabatic coupling matrix elements. The fits are highly accurate and include an improved description of the long range interactions, including new terms for the description of the long range in the diatomic fits and the atom-diatom dissociation channels. The fits are based on the DIM formalism including three body terms in Hamiltonian matrix elements, each of them obeying S2 permutational symmetry, where the positive charge is placed in either of the three hydrogen atoms, but the full system obeys S3 permutational symmetry, invariant under all permutations of the nuclei. The ab initio points used in the fitting are obtained from a complete basis set extrapolation, made for all electronic states. Total root mean square errors of the fits are 27 and 12 cm-1, for the singlet and triplet states, respectively. The errors in the channels are lower than 2 cm-1 and 6 cm-1 for the H + H and H+ + H2 channels respectively. The new fits have been used to calculate the rovibrational bound states of the lowest singlet and lowest triplet states showing very good agreement with previous calculations in the literature.

Abstract
The non-adiabatic quantum dynamics of the H + H2 + → H2 + H+ charge transfer reactions, and some isotopic variants, is studied with an accurate wave packet method. A recently developed 3 × 3 diabatic potential model is used, which is based on very accurate ab initio calculations and includes the long-range interactions for ground and excited states. It is found that for initial H2 +(v = 0), the quasi-degenerate H2(v' = 4) non-reactive charge transfer product is enhanced, producing an increase in the reaction probability and cross section. It becomes the dominant channel from collision energies above 0.2 eV, producing a ratio between v' = 4 and the rest of v's, which that increase up to 1 eV. The H + H2 + → H2 + + H exchange reaction channel is nearly negligible, while the reactive and non-reactive charge transfer reaction channels are of the same order, except that corresponding to H2(v' = 4), and the two charge transfer processes compete below 0.2 eV. This enhancement is expected to play an important vibrational and isotopic effect that needs to be evaluated. For the three proton case, the problem of the permutation symmetry is discussed when using reactant Jacobi coordinates.

Abstract
Experiments are conducted to investigate the role of the avoided crossing seam in the photodissociation of H3+. Three-dimensional imaging of dissociation products is used to determine the kinetic energy release and branching ratio among the fragmentation channels. Vibrational distributions are measured by dissociative charge transfer of H2+ products. It is found that the photodissociation of hot H3+ in the near-ultraviolet produces cold H2+, but hot H2. Modelling the wavepacket dynamics along the repulsive potential energy surface accounts for the repopulation of the ground potential energy surface. The role of the avoided crossing seam is emphasized and its importance for the astrophysically relevant charge transfer reactions underlined. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Advances in hydrogen molecular ions: H3+, H5+ and beyond'.

Abstract
The reaction between D+ and H2 plays an important role in astrochemistry at low temperatures and also serves as a prototype for a simple ion-molecule reaction. Its ground X[combining tilde]1A' state has a very small thermodynamic barrier (up to 1.8 × 10-2 eV) and the reaction proceeds through the formation of an intermediate complex lying within the potential well with a depth of at least 0.2 eV, thus representing a challenge for dynamical studies. In the present work, we analyze the title reaction within the temperature range of 20-100 K by means of ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) and quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) methods over the full-dimensional global potential energy surface developed by Aguado et al. [A. Aguado, O. Roncero, C. Tablero, C. Sanz and M. Paniagua, J. Chem. Phys., 2000, 112, 1240]. The computed thermal RPMD and QCT rate coefficients are found to be almost independent of temperature and fall within the range of 1.34-2.01 × 10-9 cm3 s-1. They are also in very good agreement with previous time-independent quantum mechanical and statistical quantum method calculations. Furthermore, we observe that the choice of asymptotic separation distance between the reactants can markedly alter the rate coefficient in the low temperature regime (20-50 K). Therefore it is of utmost importance to correctly assign the value of this parameter for dynamical studies, particularly at very low temperatures of astrochemical importance. We finally conclude that the experimental rate measurements for the title reaction are highly desirable in future.

Abstract
The kinetic energy operator for triatomic molecules with coordinate or distance-dependent nuclear masses has been derived. By combination of the chain rule method and the analysis of infinitesimal variations of molecular coordinates, a simple and general technique for the construction of the kinetic energy operator has been proposed. The asymptotic properties of the Hamiltonian have been investigated with respect to the ratio of the electron and proton mass. We have demonstrated that an ad hoc introduction of distance (and direction) dependent nuclear masses in Cartesian coordinates preserves the total rotational invariance of the problem. With the help of Wigner rotation functions, an effective Hamiltonian for nuclear motion can be derived. In the derivation, we have focused on the effective trinuclear Hamiltonian. All necessary matrix elements are given in closed analytical form. Preliminary results for the influence of non-adiabaticity on vibrational band origins are presented for H3+.

Abstract
On the basis of first-principles, the influence of nonadiabatic effects on the vibrational bound states of H3+ has been investigated using distance-dependent reduced masses and only one single potential energy surface. For these new vibrational calculations, potentials based on explicitly correlated wave functions are used where, in addition, adiabatic corrections and relativistic contributions are taken into account. For the first time, several different fully distance-dependent reduced mass surfaces in three dimensions have been incorporated in the vibrational calculations.

Abstract
Understanding the spectroscopy and dynamics of H5(+) is central in gaining insights into the H3(+) + H2 → H5(+) → H2 + H3(+) proton transfer reaction. This molecular ion exhibits large-amplitude vibrations, which allow for the transfer of a proton between H3(+) and H2 even in its ground vibrational state. With vibrational excitation, the number of open channels for permutations of protons increase. In this work, the minimized energy path variant of diffusion Monte Carlo is used to investigate how the energetically accessible proton permutations evolve as H5(+) is dissociated into H3(+) + H2. Two mechanisms for proton permutation are investigated. The first is the proton hop, which correlates to large-amplitude vibrations of the central proton in H5(+). The second is the exchange of a pair of hydrogen atoms between H3(+) and H2. This mechanism requires several proton hops along with a 120° rotation of H3(+) within the H5(+) molecular ion. This analysis shows that while there is a narrow region of configuration space over which both isomerization processes are energetically accessible, full permutation of the five protons in H5(+) more likely occurs through a stepwise mechanism. Such full permutation of the protons becomes accessible when the shared proton stretch is excited to the vpt = 2 or 3 excited state. The effects of deuteration and rotational excitation of the H2 and H3(+) products are also investigated. Deuteration inhibits permutation of protons, while rotational excitation has only a small impact on these processes.

Abstract
In this work we critically revise several aspects of previous ab initio quantum chemistry studies [P. Palmieri et al., Mol. Phys. 98, 1835 (2000); C. N. Ramachandran et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 469, 26 (2009)] of the HeH(2)(+) system. New diatomic curves for the H(2)(+) and HeH(+) molecular ions, which provide vibrational frequencies at a near spectroscopic level of accuracy, have been generated to test the quality of the diatomic terms employed in the previous analytical fittings. The reliability of the global potential energy surfaces has also been tested performing benchmark quantum scattering calculations within the time-independent approach in an extended interval of energies. In particular, the total integral cross sections have been calculated in the total collision energy range 0.955-2.400 eV for the scattering of the He atom by the ortho- and para-hydrogen molecular ion. The energy profiles of the total integral cross sections for selected vibro-rotational states of H(2)(+) (v = 0,...,5 and j = 1,...,7) show a strong rotational enhancement for the lower vibrational states which becomes weaker as the vibrational quantum number increases. Comparison with several available experimental data is presented and discussed.

Abstract
The molecular ion H(3)(+) is the simplest polyatomic and poly-electronic molecular system, and its spectrum constitutes an important benchmark for which precise answers can be obtained ab initio from the equations of quantum mechanics. Significant progress in the computation of the ro-vibrational spectrum of H(3)(+) is discussed. A new, global potential energy surface (PES) based on ab initio points computed with an average accuracy of 0.01 cm(-1) relative to the non-relativistic limit has recently been constructed. An analytical representation of these points is provided, exhibiting a standard deviation of 0.097 cm(-1). Problems with earlier fits are discussed. The new PES is used for the computation of transition frequencies. Recently measured lines at visible wavelengths combined with previously determined infrared ro-vibrational data show that an accuracy of the order of 0.1 cm(-1) is achieved by these computations. In order to achieve this degree of accuracy, relativistic, adiabatic and non-adiabatic effects must be properly accounted for. The accuracy of these calculations facilitates the reassignment of some measured lines, further reducing the standard deviation between experiment and theory.

Abstract
The most accurate electronic structure calculations are performed using wave function expansions in terms of basis functions explicitly dependent on the inter-electron distances. In our recent work, we use such basis functions to calculate a highly accurate potential energy surface (PES) for the H(3)(+) ion. The functions are explicitly correlated Gaussians, which include inter-electron distances in the exponent. Key to obtaining the high accuracy in the calculations has been the use of the analytical energy gradient determined with respect to the Gaussian exponential parameters in the minimization of the Rayleigh-Ritz variational energy functional. The effective elimination of linear dependences between the basis functions and the automatic adjustment of the positions of the Gaussian centres to the changing molecular geometry of the system are the keys to the success of the computational procedure. After adiabatic and relativistic corrections are added to the PES and with an effective accounting of the non-adiabatic effects in the calculation of the rotational/vibrational states, the experimental H(3)(+) rovibrational spectrum is reproduced at the 0.1 cm(-1) accuracy level up to 16,600 cm(-1) above the ground state.

Abstract
Based on different ab initio electronic structure calculations (CI-R12 and Gaussian Geminals) of the Born-Oppenheimer electronic energy E(BO) of H(3)(+) from high to highest quality, we build up a potential energy surface which represents a highly reliable form of the topology of the whole potential region, locally and globally. We use the CI-R12 method in order to get within reasonable CPU-time a relatively dense grid of energy points. We demonstrate that CI-R12 is good enough to give an accurate surface, i.e., Gaussian Geminals are not absolutely necessary. For different types of potential energy surface fits, we performed variational calculations of all bound vibrational states, including resonances above the dissociation limit, for total angular momentum J = 0. We clarify the differences between different fits of the energy to various functional forms of the potential surface. Small rms-values (<1 cm(-1)) of the fit do not provide precise information about the interpolatory behaviour of the fit functions.

Abstract
The H(3)(+) potential energy surface is sampled at 5900 geometries with the emphasis on the nonequilibrium and asymptotic points. Apart from the Born-Oppenheimer energy converged to the accuracy better than 0.02 cm(-1), the adiabatic and the leading relativistic corrections are computed at each geometry. To represent analytically the potential energy surface, the parameters of a power series are determined by fitting to the computed energy points. Possible choice of nuclear masses simulating the nonadiabatic effects in solving the nuclear Schrodinger equation is analyzed. A set of theoretically predicted rovibrational transitions is confronted with the experimental data in the 10,700-13,700 cm(-1) window of the spectra.

Abstract
In this paper, we have computed the rovibrational spectrum of the H(3) (+) molecule using a new global potential energy surface, invariant under all permutations of the nuclei, that includes the long range electrostatic interactions analytically. The energy levels are obtained by a variational calculation using hyperspherical coordinates. From the comparison with available experimental results for low lying levels, we conclude that our accuracy is of the order of 0.1 cm(-1) for states localized in the vicinity of equilateral triangular configurations of the nuclei, and changes to the order of 1 cm(-1) when the system is distorted away from equilateral configurations. Full rovibrational spectra up to the H(+)+H(2) dissociation energy limit have been computed. The statistical properties of this spectrum (nearest neighbor distribution and spectral rigidity) show the quantum signature of classical chaos and are consistent with random matrix theory. On the other hand, the correlation function, even when convoluted with a smoothing function, exhibits oscillations which are not described by random matrix theory. We discuss a possible similarity between these oscillations and the ones observed experimentally.

Abstract
A simple, yet reliable, scheme based on treating uniformly singlet-pair and triplet-pair interactions is suggested to extrapolate atomic and molecular electron correlation energies calculated at two basis-set levels of ab initio theory to the infinite one-electron basis-set limit. The novel dual-level method is first tested on extrapolating the full correlation in single-reference coupled-cluster singles and doubles energies for the closed-shell systems CH2((1)A1), H2O, HF, N2, CO, Ne, and F2 with correlation-consistent basis sets of the type cc-pVXZ (X=D,T,Q,5,6) reported by Klopper [Mol. Phys. 6, 481 (2001)] against his own benchmark calculations with large uncontracted basis sets obtained from explicit correlated singles and doubles coupled-cluster theory. Comparisons are also reported for the same data set but using both single-reference Moller-Plesset and coupled-cluster doubles methods. The results show a similar, often better, accordance with the target results than Klopper's extrapolations where singlet-pair and triplet-pair energies are extrapolated separately using the popular X(-3) and X(-5) dual-level laws, respectively. Applications to the extrapolation of the dynamical correlation in multireference configuration interaction calculations carried out anew for He, H2, HeH+, He2 ++, H3+(1 (1)A'), H3+(1 (3)A'), BH, CH, NH, OH, FH, B2, C2, N2, O2, F2, BO, CO, NO, BN, CN, SH, H2O, and NH3 with standard augmented correlation-consistent basis sets of the type aug-cc-pVXZ (X=D,T,Q,5,6) are also reported. Despite lacking accurate theoretical or experimental data for comparison in the case of most diatomic systems, the new method also shows in this case a good performance when judged from the results obtained with the traditional schemes which extrapolate using the two largest affordable basis sets. For the Hartree-Fock and complete-active space self-consistent field energies, a simple pragmatic extrapolation rule is examined whose results are shown to compare well with the ones obtained from the best reported schemes.

Abstract
The authors present diabatic and adiabatic potential energy surfaces for the three lowest electronic singlet states of H3+. The modeling of the surfaces is based on the multi-sheeted double many-body expansion method which consists of dressing the various matrix elements of the diatomics-in-molecules potential matrix with three-body terms. The avoided crossing between the two lowest states and the conical intersection between the second and the third state are accurately represented by construction.

Abstract
After a short historical account of the theory of the H3+ ion, two ab initio methods are reviewed that allow the computation of the ground-state potential energy surface (PES) of H3+ in the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation, with microhartree or even sub-microhartree accuracy, namely the R12 method and the method of explicitly correlated Gaussians. The BO-PES is improved by the inclusion of relativistic effects and adiabatic corrections. It is discussed how non-adiabatic effects on rotation and vibration can be simulated by corrections to the moving nuclear masses. The importance of the appropriate analytic fit to the computed points of the PES for the subsequent computation of the rovibronic spectrum is addressed. Some recent extensions of the computed PES in the energy region above the barrier to linearity are reviewed. This involves a large set of input geometries and the correct treatment of the dissociation asymptotics, including the coupling with the first excited singlet state. Some comments on this state as well as on the lowest triplet state of H3+ are made. The paper ends with a few remarks on the ion H5+.

Abstract
Since the Royal Society Discussion Meeting on H3+ in 2000, the laboratory spectroscopy of H3+ has entered a new regime. For the first time, transitions of H3+ above the barrier to linearity have been observed. A highly sensitive near-infrared spectrometer based on a titanium:sapphire laser and incorporating a dual-beam, double-modulation technique with bidirectional optical multi-passing has been developed in order to detect these transitions, which are more than 4600 times weaker than the fundamental band. We discuss our recent work on the 2v1 + 2v2(2) <-- 0, 3v1 + v2(1) <-- 0, v1 + 4v2(2) <-- 0, v1 + 4V2(4) <-- 0 and 2v1 + 3v2(1) <-- 0 combination bands and the 5v2(1) <-- 0, 5v2(3) <-- 0, 52(5) <-- 0 and 6v2(2) <-- 0 overtone bands. Experimentally determined energy levels provide a critical test of ab initio calculations in this challenging energy regime (greater than 10,000 cm(-1)). By comparing the experimental energy levels and theoretical energy levels from ab initio calculations in which the adiabatic and relativistic corrections are incorporated, the extent of higher-order effects such as non-adiabatic and radiative corrections is revealed.

Abstract
The lowest two ab initio potential energy surfaces (PES), and the corresponding nonadiabatic couplings between them, have been obtained for the H3+ system; the molecular data are compared to those calculated with the diatomic in molecules (DIM) method. The form of the couplings is discussed in terms of the topology of the molecular structure of the triatomic. The method of Baer is employed to generate "diabatic" states and the residual nonadiabatic couplings are calculated. The ab initio results for these are markedly different from the corresponding DIM data, and show the need to consider the third PES.

Abstract
An accurate global potential-energy surface (PES) is reported for H5(+) based on more than 100,000 CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ ab initio energies. This PES has full permutational symmetry with respect to interchange of H atoms and dissociates to H3(+) and H2. Ten known stationary points of H5(+) are characterized and compared to previous ab initio calculations. Quantum diffusion Monte Carlo calculations are performed on the PES to obtain the zero-point energy of H5(+) and the anharmonic dissociation energy (D0) of H5(+) --> H3(+) + H2. The rigorous zero-point state of H4D+ is also calculated and discussed within the context of a strictly classical approach to obtain the branching ratio of the reaction H4D+ --> H3(+) + HD and H2D+ + H2. Such an approach is taken using the PES and critiqued based on the properties of the quantum zero-point state. Finally, a simple procedure for adding the long range-interaction energy is described.

Abstract
This work presents results of quantum mechanical calculations of reaction probabilities for the ion-neutral molecule collisions H- + D2 <--> HD + D-. Time-dependent wave packet propagations for total angular momentum J not equal to 0, including the full Coriolis coupling, are performed. The calculated state-to-state reaction probabilities using product Jacobi coordinates are compared with energy-resolved reaction probabilities calculated with the flux-operator using reactant Jacobi coordinates and with time-independent calculations. Differences between nearly converged integral cross sections and those using the J-shifting method and centrifugal sudden approximation and comparison with experimental results will be presented.
