Abstract
The reaction N + OH → NO + H involves the intermediate formation of NOH adducts which in part rearrange to HNO conformers. A statistical treatment of the process is developed in which an initial adiabatic channel capture of the reactants is accompanied by partial primary redissociation of the N⋯OH collision pairs. A criterion for the extent of this primary redissociation in competition to the formation of randomized, long-lived, complex of NOH is proposed. The NOH adducts then may decompose to NO + H, rearrange in a unimolecular process to HNO, or undergo secondary redissociation back to the reactants N + OH, while HNO may also decompose to NO + H. As the reactants N(4S) + OH(2Π) have open electronic shells, non-Born-Oppenheimer effects have to be considered. Their influence on thermal rate constants of the reaction at low temperatures is illustrated and compared with such effects in other reactions such as C(3P) + OH(2Π).

Abstract
The photodissociation of small molecules has been extensively studied because of the increase in environmental problems related to the atmosphere of the Earth. In this work, the photodissociation mechanisms of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) as a model molecule in its lowest singlet-excited (S1) state were systematically studied using the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) and transition state theory (TST). In particular, this study focused on nonradiative relaxation processes that convert the S0 → S1 excited-state molecule to its products in their respective electronic ground states. The potential energy curves obtained from relaxed scans suggest that O-H dissociation is the preferred process in the S1 state. For the N-O and N-H dissociation pathways, thermally excited precursors were hypothesized to form in the S0 state to circumvent O-H dissociation. Thus, S0 → S1 vertical excitations lead to transition structures in the S1 state, which fragment to their respective electronic-ground-state products. The thermodynamic and kinetic results confirmed the precursor hypothesis, showing that the exothermic energy caused by the formation of HNO and H2 is sufficient to generate such precursors in the S0 state. Additionally, the TST confirmed that unimolecular isomerization-dissociation is a two-step process that generates products effectively by direct photolysis of the corresponding covalent bonds. In particular, the process consists of O-H bond dissociation, followed by spontaneous isomerization and formation of H2 in its electronic ground state, resulting in the high quantum yield observed in the UV absorption experiments in the preferential formation of HNO and H2. The configuration interaction coefficients of the characteristic structures on the potential energy curves revealed considerable changes in the multiconfigurational character of the wavefunctions, especially for the transition structures. These are characterized by the development of Rydberg orbitals, being produced at the intersection of the S0 and S1 states. The present study highlights the effects of thermal selectivity and the multiconfigurational character of the wavefunctions on photodissociation. Because detailed information on the photolytic mechanisms of isolated NH2OH is limited both theoretically and experimentally, these results provide fundamental insight into unimolecular photodissociation, posing ground for future studies on related systems.

Abstract
Two calculated structures of the [Fe4N(CO)12]3– CO2 reduction electrocatalyst in its twice reduced state connected by a CO dissociation pathway are studied.
The CO2 reduction electrocatalyst [Fe4N(CO)12]– (abbrev. 1–) reduces CO2 to HCO2– in a two-electron, one-proton catalytic cycle. Here, we employ ab initio calculations to estimate the first two redox potentials of 1– and explore the pathway of a side reaction involving CO dissociation from 13–. Using the BP86 density functional approximation, the redox potentials were computed with a root mean squared error of 0.15 V with respect to experimental data. High temperature Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics was employed to discover a reaction pathway of CO dissociation from 13– with a reaction energy of +10.6 kcal mol–1 and an activation energy of 18.8 kcal mol–1; including harmonic free energy terms, this yields ΔGsep = 1.4 kcal mol–1 for fully separated species and ΔG‡ = +17.4 kcal mol–1, indicating CO dissociation is energetically accessible at ambient conditions. The analogous dissociation pathway from 12– has a reaction energy of 22.1 kcal mol–1 and an activation energy of 22.4 kcal mol–1 (ΔGsep = 12.8 kcal mol–1, ΔG‡ = +18.1 kcal mol–1). Our computed harmonic vibrational analysis of [Fe4N(CO)11]3– or 23– reveals a distinct CO-stretching peak red-shifted from the main CO-stretching band, pointing to a possible vibrational signature of dissociation. Multi-reference CASSCF calculations are used to check the assumptions of the density functional approximations that were used to obtain the majority of the results.

Abstract
An efficient implementation is presented for analytic gradients of the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method with the density-fitting approximation, denoted DF-CCSD. Frozen core terms are also included. When applied to a set of alkanes, the DF-CCSD analytic gradients are significantly accelerated compared to conventional CCSD for larger molecules. The efficiency of our DF-CCSD algorithm arises from the acceleration of several different terms, which are designated as the "gradient terms": computation of particle density matrices (PDMs), generalized Fock-matrix (GFM), solution of the Z-vector equation, formation of the relaxed PDMs and GFM, back-transformation of PDMs and GFM to the atomic orbital (AO) basis, and evaluation of gradients in the AO basis. For the largest member of the alkane set (C10H22), the computational times for the gradient terms (with the cc-pVTZ basis set) are 2582.6 (CCSD) and 310.7 (DF-CCSD) min, respectively, a speed up of more than 8-folds. For gradient related terms, the DF approach avoids the usage of four-index electron repulsion integrals. Based on our previous study [U. Bozkaya, J. Chem. Phys. 141, 124108 (2014)], our formalism completely avoids construction or storage of the 4-index two-particle density matrix (TPDM), using instead 2- and 3-index TPDMs. The DF approach introduces negligible errors for equilibrium bond lengths and harmonic vibrational frequencies.

Abstract
We first characterize the dissociation pathways of BrCH2CH2ONO, a substituted alkyl nitrite, upon photoexcitation at 193 nm under collision-free conditions, in a crossed laser-molecular beam scattering apparatus using vacuum ultraviolet photoionization detection. Three primary photodissociation pathways occur: photoelimination of HNO, leading to the products HNO + BrCH2CHO; C-Br bond photofission, leading to Br + CH2CH2ONO; and O-NO bond photofission, leading to NO + BrCH2CH2O. The data show that alkyl nitrites can eliminate HNO via a unimolecular mechanism in addition to the commonly accepted bulk disproportionation mechanism. Some of the products from the primary photodissociation pathways are highly vibrationally excited, so we then probe the product branching from the unimolecular dissociation of these unstable intermediates. Notably, the vibrationally excited CH2CH2ONO radicals undergo two channels predicted by statistical transition-state theory, and an additional non-intrinsic reaction coordinate channel, HNO elimination. CH2CH2ONO is formed with high rotational energy; by employing rotational models based on conservation of angular momentum, we predict, and verify experimentally, the kinetic energies of stable CH2CH2ONO radicals and the angular distribution of dissociation products. The major dissociation pathway of CH2CH2ONO is NO2 + ethene, and some of the NO2 is formed with sufficient internal energy to undergo further photodissociation. Nascent BrCH2CHO and CH2Br are also photodissociated upon absorption of a second 193 nm photon; we derive the kinetic energy release of these dissociations based on our data, noting similarities to the analogous photodissociation of ClCH2CHO and CH2Cl.

Abstract
Our group has been working to develop parahydrogen (pH2) matrix isolation spectroscopy as a method to study low-temperature condensed-phase reactions of atomic hydrogen with various reaction partners. Guided by the well-defined studies of cold atom chemistry in rare-gas solids, the special properties of quantum hosts such as solid pH2 afford new opportunities to study the analogous chemical reactions under quantum diffusion conditions in hopes of discovering new types of chemical reaction mechanisms. In this study, we present Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies of the 193 nm photoinduced chemistry of nitric oxide (NO) isolated in solid pH2 over the 1.8 to 4.3 K temperature range. Upon short-term in situ irradiation the NO readily undergoes photolysis to yield HNO, NOH, NH, NH3, H2O, and H atoms. We map the postphotolysis reactions of mobile H atoms with NO and document first-order growth in HNO and NOH reaction products for up to 5 h after photolysis. We perform three experiments at 4.3 K and one at 1.8 K to permit the temperature dependence of the reaction kinetics to be quantified. We observe Arrhenius-type behavior with a pre-exponential factor of A = 0.036(2) min(-1) and Ea = 2.39(1) cm(-1). This is in sharp contrast to previous H atom reactions we have studied in solid pH2 that display definitively non-Arrhenius behavior. The contrasting temperature dependence measured for the H + NO reaction is likely related to the details of H atom quantum diffusion in solid pH2 and deserves further study.

Abstract
Results are presented that suggest that thiazyl hydride (HSN)/thionitrosyl hydride (sulfimide, HNS) can be used as light-sensitive compounds for NO-delivery in biological media, as well as markers for the possible detection of intermediates in nitrites + H2S reactions at the cellular level. They are expected to be more efficient than the HNO/HON isovalent species and hence they should be considered instead. A set of characteristic spectroscopic features are identified that could aid in the possible detection of these species in the gas phase or in biological environments. The possibility of intramolecular dynamical processes involving excited states that are capable of interconverting HNS and its isomeric form HSN is examined.

Abstract
General analytic gradient expressions (with the frozen-core approximation) are presented for density-fitted post-HF methods. An efficient implementation of frozen-core analytic gradients for the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) with the density-fitting (DF) approximation (applying to both reference and correlation energies), which is denoted as DF-MP2, is reported. The DF-MP2 method is applied to a set of alkanes, conjugated dienes, and noncovalent interaction complexes to compare the computational cost of single point analytic gradients with MP2 with the resolution of the identity approach (RI-MP2) [F. Weigend and M. Häser, Theor. Chem. Acc. 97, 331 (1997); R. A. Distasio, R. P. Steele, Y. M. Rhee, Y. Shao, and M. Head-Gordon, J. Comput. Chem. 28, 839 (2007)]. In the RI-MP2 method, the DF approach is used only for the correlation energy. Our results demonstrate that the DF-MP2 method substantially accelerate the RI-MP2 method for analytic gradient computations due to the reduced input/output (I/O) time. Because in the DF-MP2 method the DF approach is used for both reference and correlation energies, the storage of 4-index electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) are avoided, 3-index ERI tensors are employed instead. Further, as in case of integrals, our gradient equation is completely avoid construction or storage of the 4-index two-particle density matrix (TPDM), instead we use 2- and 3-index TPDMs. Hence, the I/O bottleneck of a gradient computation is significantly overcome. Therefore, the cost of the generalized-Fock matrix (GFM), TPDM, solution of Z-vector equations, the back transformation of TPDM, and integral derivatives are substantially reduced when the DF approach is used for the entire energy expression. Further application results show that the DF approach introduce negligible errors for closed-shell reaction energies and equilibrium bond lengths.

Abstract
Analytic energy gradients for the orbital-optimized third-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (OMP3) [U. Bozkaya, J. Chem. Phys. 135, 224103 (2011)] are presented. The OMP3 method is applied to problematic chemical systems with challenging electronic structures. The performance of the OMP3 method is compared with those of canonical second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), third-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP3), coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD), and coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] for investigating equilibrium geometries, vibrational frequencies, and open-shell reaction energies. For bond lengths, the performance of OMP3 is in between those of MP3 and CCSD. For harmonic vibrational frequencies, the OMP3 method significantly eliminates the singularities arising from the abnormal response contributions observed for MP3 in case of symmetry-breaking problems, and provides noticeably improved vibrational frequencies for open-shell molecules. For open-shell reaction energies, OMP3 exhibits a better performance than MP3 and CCSD as in case of barrier heights and radical stabilization energies. As discussed in previous studies, the OMP3 method is several times faster than CCSD in energy computations. Further, in analytic gradient computations for the CCSD method one needs to solve λ-amplitude equations, however for OMP3 one does not since λ(ab)(ij(1))=t(ij)(ab(1)) and λ(ab)(ij(2))=t(ij)(ab(2)). Additionally, one needs to solve orbital Z-vector equations for CCSD, but for OMP3 orbital response contributions are zero owing to the stationary property of OMP3. Overall, for analytic gradient computations the OMP3 method is several times less expensive than CCSD (roughly ~4-6 times). Considering the balance of computational cost and accuracy we conclude that the OMP3 method emerges as a very useful tool for the study of electronically challenging chemical systems.

Abstract
In recent years, internal coordinates have become the preferred means of expressing potential energy surfaces. The ability to transform quantities from chemically significant internal coordinates to primitive Cartesian coordinates and spectroscopically relevant normal coordinates is thus critical to the further development of computational chemistry. In the present work, general nth order formulas are presented for the Cartesian derivatives of the five most commonly used internal coordinates--bond stretching, bond angle, torsion, out-of-plane angle, and linear bending. To compose such formulas in a reasonably understandable fashion, a new notation is developed that is a generalization of that which has been used previously for similar purposes. The notation developed leads to easily programmable and reasonably understandable arbitrary order formulas, yet it is powerful enough to express the arbitrary order B tensor of a general, N-point internal coordinate, as is done herein. The techniques employed in the derivation of such formulas are relatively straightforward, and could presumably be applied to a number of other internal coordinates as needed.
