Abstract
Predictive capability, accuracy, and affordability are essential features of a theory that is capable of describing dissociative chemisorption on a metal surface. This type of reaction is important for heterogeneous catalysis. Here we present an approach in which we use diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) to pin the minimum barrier height and construct a density functional that reproduces this value. This predictive approach allows the construction of a potential energy surface at the cost of density functional theory while retaining near DMC accuracy. Scrutinizing effects of energy dissipation and quantum tunneling, dynamics calculations suggest the approach to be of near chemical accuracy, reproducing molecular beam sticking experiments for the showcase H2 + Al(110) system to ∼1.4 kcal/mol.

Abstract
The theory of time-dependent quantum dynamics of dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on metal surfaces is reviewed, in the framework of electronically adiabatic scattering from static surfaces. Four implementations of the time-dependent wave packet (TDWP) method are discussed. In the direct product pseudo-spectral and the spherical harmonics pseudo-spectral methods, no use is made of the symmetry associated with the surface unit cell. This symmetry is exploited by the symmetry adapted wave packet and the symmetry adapted pseudo-spectral (SAPS) method, which are efficient for scattering at normal incidence. The SAPS method can be employed for potential energy surfaces of general form. Comparison to experiment shows that the TDWP method yields good, but not yet excellent, quantitative accuracy for dissociation of (ν = 0, j = 0) H 2 if the calculations are based on accurately fitted density functional theory calculations that are performed using the generalized gradient approximation. The influence of the molecule's vibration (rotation) is well (reasonably well) described. The theory does not yet yield quantitatively accurate results for rovibrationally inelastic scattering. The theory has helped with the interpretation of existing experimental results, for instance, by solving a parodox regarding the corrugation of Pt(111) as seen by reacting and scattering H 2. The theory has also provided some exciting new predictions, for instance, concerning where on the surface of Cu(100) H2 reacts depending on its vibrational state. Future theoretical studies of H 2 reacting on metal surfaces will likely be aimed at validating GGAs for molecule-surface interactions, and understanding trends in collisions of H 2 with complex metal surfaces.

Abstract
The accurate description of molecule-surface interactions requires a detailed knowledge of the underlying potential-energy surface (PES). Recently, neural networks (NNs) have been shown to be an efficient technique to accurately interpolate the PES information provided for a set of molecular configurations, e.g., by first-principles calculations. Here, we further develop this approach by building the NN on a new type of symmetry functions, which allows to take the symmetry of the surface exactly into account. The accuracy and efficiency of such symmetry-adapted NNs is illustrated by the application to a six-dimensional PES describing the interaction of oxygen molecules with the Al(111) surface.

Abstract
We report the first six-dimensional quantum dynamical study of the dissociative adsorption of H(2) on a (110) surface. We have performed quantum coupled-channel calculations for the system H(2)/Pd(110) based on a potential energy surface (PES) that was derived from ab initio electronic structure calculations. In particular, we have focused on the effects of the corrugation and anisotropy of the PES on the H(2) dissociation probability. Our results agree well with the available experimental data for the sticking probability as a function of the initial kinetic energy and the angle of incidence. Because of the coupling between the anisotropy and corrugation of the potential energy surface our calculations predict an unusual rotational heating and a rather small rotational alignment in desorption.
