Vibration and rotation of CO in C60 and predicted infrared spectrum

Perspective: Accurate treatment of the quantum dynamics of light molecules inside fullerene cages: Translation-rotation states, spectroscopy, and symmetry breaking

In this perspective, I review the current status of the theoretical investigations of the quantum translation-rotation (TR) dynamics and spectroscopy of light molecules encapsulated inside fullerenes, mostly C₆₀ and C₇₀. The methodologies developed in the past decade allow accurate quantum calculations of the TR eigenstates of one and two nanoconfined molecules and have led to deep insights into the nature of the underlying dynamics. Combining these bound-state methodologies with the formalism of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has resulted in the novel and powerful approach for the quantum calculation of the INS spectra of a diatomic molecule in a nanocavity with an arbitrary geometry. These simulations have not only become indispensable for the interpretation and assignment of the experimental spectra but are also behind the surprising discovery of the INS selection rule for diatomics in near-spherical nanocavities. Promising directions for future research are discussed.

Confinement Effects on the Nuclear Spin Isomer Conversion of H2O

The mechanism for interconversion between the nuclear spin isomers (NSI) of H₂O remains shrouded in uncertainties. The temperature dependence displayed by NSI interconversion rates for H₂O isolated in an argon matrix provides evidence that confinement effects are responsible for the dramatic increase in their kinetics with respect to the gas phase, providing new pathways for o-H₂O↔p-H₂O conversion in endohedral compounds. This reveals intramolecular aspects of the interconversion mechanism which may improve methodologies for the separation and storage of NSI en route to applications ranging from magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging to interpretations of spin temperatures in the interstellar medium.

Chiral recognition by fullerenes: CHFClBr enantiomers in the C82cage

Theoretical studies of complexes of the enantiomers of CHFClBr with C₈₂-3 show that the too large guests are stabilized in the C₈₂cage by electrostatic interactions. The sign of v(CH) stretching vibration of S-CHFClBr@C₈₂-3 in the VCD spectrum is reversed as compared to that of the free guest. Spectra of the complexes exhibit differences.

Infrared spectroscopy of small-molecule endofullerenes

Hydrogen is one of the few molecules that has been incarcerated in the molecular cage of C₆₀ to form the endohedral supramolecular complex H₂@C₆₀. In this confinement, hydrogen acquires new properties. Its translation motion, within the C₆₀ cavity, becomes quantized, is correlated with its rotation and breaks inversion symmetry that induces infrared (IR) activity of H₂. We apply IR spectroscopy to study the dynamics of hydrogen isotopologues H₂, D₂ and HD incarcerated in C₆₀. The translation and rotation modes appear as side bands to the hydrogen vibration mode in the mid-IR part of the absorption spectrum. Because of the large mass difference of hydrogen and C₆₀ and the high symmetry of C₆₀ the problem is almost identical to a vibrating rotor moving in a three-dimensional spherical potential. We derive potential, rotation, vibration and dipole moment parameters from the analysis of the IR absorption spectra. Our results were used to derive the parameters of a pairwise additive five-dimensional potential energy surface for H₂@C₆₀. The same parameters were used to predict H₂ energies inside C₇₀. We compare the predicted energies and the low-temperature IR absorption spectra of H₂@C₇₀.

Infrared spectroscopy of endohedral HD and D2 in C60

We report on the dynamics of two hydrogen isotopomers, D(2) and HD, trapped in the molecular cages of a fullerene C(60) molecule. We measured the infrared spectra and analyzed them using a spherical potential for a vibrating rotor. The potential, vibration-rotation Hamiltonian, and dipole moment parameters are compared with previously studied H(2)@C(60) parameters [M. Ge, U. Nagel, D. Hüvonen, T. Rõõm, S. Mamone, M. H. Levitt, M. Carravetta, Y. Murata, K. Komatsu, J. Y.-C. Chen, and N. J. Turro, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 054507 (2011)]. The isotropic part of the potential is similar for all three isotopomers. In HD@C(60), we observe mixing of the rotational states and an interference effect of the dipole moment terms due to the displacement of the HD rotation center from the fullerene cage center.

Vibration-rotation spectroscopy of molecules trapped inside C60

A simple model is developed to treat the energy levels and spectroscopy of diatomic molecules inside C 60. The C 60 cage is treated as spherically symmetric, and the coupling to the C 60 vibrations is ignored. The remaining six degrees of freedom correspond to the vibrations and rotations of the diatomic molecule and the rattling vibration of the molecule inside the cage. By using conservation of angular momentum, we can remove two of these motions and simplify the calculations. The resulting energy levels are simple and can be labeled by a set of quantum numbers. The IR and Raman spectra look like those of gas-phase diatomic molecules at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, hot bands due to the low-frequency rattling mode appear, and the spectrum becomes congested, looking like a solution spectrum.
