Simulation of ultrafast dynamics and pump–probe spectroscopy using classical trajectories

Mixed Quantum-Classical Liouville Equation Treatment of Electronic Spectroscopy of Condensed Systems: Harmonic and Anharmonic Electron-Phonon Coupling

This Review integrates the use of electronic optical response function theory and the mixed quantum-classical (MQC) Liouville equation (MQCLE), thereby leading to electronic spectroscopy in MQC media. It further sheds light on the applicability, utility, and efficiency of the mixed quantum-classical dynamics (MQCD) formalism, which starts off with the MQCLE, in probing spectroscopy and dynamics of condensed systems, whereby quantum mechanics and classical mechanics are combined systematically. The author has been exploring and implementing MQCD to investigate electron-phonon coupling effects on electronic dephasing in harmonic and anharmonic systems by calculating linear and nonlinear optical transition analytically and numerically dipole moment time correlation functions in an MQC environment, thereby presenting an in depth spectral profile analysis and their shape and symmetry. The distinctive capability of the MQC time correlation functions is that ergodicity and stationarity properties are inherently satisfied as part of the mixed quantum-classical dynamics (MQCD) framework, unlike classical correlation functions. While some research groups have applied MQCLE to calculate vibrational spectra to study hydrogen-bonded complexes in a MQC environment and other groups calculated Optical response function to probe electron transfer dynamics using the basis mapping technique, the approach, purpose, rigor, applications, and path to the end results reported herein are different. Finally, the same framework is employed to study dissipative systems in the MQC limit, whereby the zero-phonon line adopts the correct width and eliminates its asymmetry. While the full quantum mechanical model, like the multimode Brownian oscillator (MBO) model, yields the correct width and inaccurate shape in the low-temperature limit, the MQCD formalism seems to produce an accurate zero-phonon profile. Nonlinear optical signals are also reviewed in MQC media to show the applicability and utility of this approach. The vibronic optical response functions developed here will account for geometry change, frequency change, and anharmonicity upon electronic excitation to accurately probe electronic dephasing, electron-phonon coupling, shape, and symmetry of profiles and present differences and similarities to the MBO model on pure electronic dephasing. Frequency change and anharmonicity are vitally crucial for accurately assessing electron-phonon coupling upon electronic excitation. This is an additional unique result obtained by the author to further demonstrate the applicability and utility of this approach over other approximation schemes in probing electronic dephasing including that of the MBO model.

Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Ab Initio Quasiclassical Simulation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectra of Pyrazine

Two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy is a powerful nonlinear technique which provides spectroscopic information on two frequency axes as well as dynamical information as a function of the so-called waiting time. Herein, an ab initio theoretical framework for the simulation of electronic 2D spectra has been developed. The method is based on the classical approximation to the doorway-window representation of three-pulse photon-echo signals and the description of nuclear motion by classical trajectories. Nonadiabatic effects are taken into account by a trajectory surface-hopping algorithm. 2D electronic spectra were simulated with ab initio on-the-fly trajectory calculations using the ADC(2) electronic-structure method for the pyrazine molecule, which is a benchmark system for ultrafast radiationless decay through conical intersections. It is demonstrated that 2D spectroscopy with subfemtosecond UV pulses can provide unprecedented detailed information on the ultrafast photodynamics of polyatomic molecules.

Ab Initio Surface-Hopping Simulation of Femtosecond Transient-Absorption Pump-Probe Signals of Nonadiabatic Excited-State Dynamics Using the Doorway-Window Representation

An ab initio theoretical framework for the simulation of femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (TA) pump-probe (PP) spectra with quasi-classical trajectories is presented. The simulations are based on the classical approximation to the doorway-window (DW) representation of third-order four-wave-mixing signals. The DW formula accounts for the finite duration and spectral shape of the pump and probe pulses. In the classical DW formalism, classical trajectories are stochastically sampled from a positive definite doorway distribution, and the signals are evaluated by averaging over a positive definite window distribution. Nonadiabatic excited-state dynamics is described by a stochastic surface-hopping algorithm. The method has been implemented for the pyrazine molecule with the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) ab initio electronic-structure method. The methodology is illustrated by ab initio simulations of the ground-state bleach, stimulated emission, and excited-state absorption contributions to the TA PP spectrum of gas-phase pyrazine.

Approaching black-box calculations of pump-probe fragmentation dynamics of polyatomic molecules

A general framework for the simulation of ultrafast pump-probe time resolved experiments based on Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) is presented. Interaction of the molecular species with a laser is treated by a simple maximum entropy distribution of the excited state occupancies. The latter decay of the electronic excitation into the vibrations is based on an on-the-fly estimation of the rate of the internal conversion, while the energy is distributed in a thermostat-like fashion. The approach was tested by reproducing the results of previous femtosecond studies on ethylene, naphthalene and new results for phenanthrene.

Quantum dynamics and spectroscopy of dihalogens in solid matrices. II. Theoretical aspects and G-MCTDH simulations of time-resolved coherent Raman spectra of Schrödinger cat states of the embedded I2Kr18 cluster

This study presents quantum dynamical simulations, using the Gaussian-based multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (G-MCTDH) method, of time-resolved coherent Raman four-wave-mixing spectroscopic experiments for the iodine molecule embedded in a cryogenic crystal krypton matrix [D. Picconi et al., J. Chem. Phys. 150, 064111 (2019)]. These experiments monitor the time-evolving vibrational coherence between two wave packets created in a quantum superposition (i.e., a "Schrödinger cat state") by a pair of pump pulses which induce electronic B Πu30⁺⟵XΣg+1 transitions. A theoretical description of the spectroscopic measurement is developed, which elucidates the connection between the nonlinear signals and the wave packet coherence. The analysis provides an effective means to simulate the spectra for several different optical conditions with a minimum number of quantum dynamical propagations. The G-MCTDH method is used to calculate and interpret the time-resolved coherent Raman spectra of two selected initial superpositions for a I₂Kr₁₈ cluster embedded in a frozen Kr cage. The time- and frequency-dependent signals carry information about the molecular mechanisms of dissipation and decoherence, which involve vibrational energy transfer to the stretching mode of the four "belt" Kr atoms. The details of these processes and the number of active solvent modes depend in a non-trivial way on the specific initial superposition.

Ultrafast X-Ray Scattering Measurements of Coherent Structural Dynamics on the Ground-State Potential Energy Surface of a Diplatinum Molecule

We report x-ray free electron laser experiments addressing ground-state structural dynamics of the diplatinum anion Pt_{2}POP_{4} following photoexcitation. The structural dynamics are tracked with <100  fs time resolution by x-ray scattering, utilizing the anisotropic component to suppress contributions from the bulk solvent. The x-ray data exhibit a strong oscillatory component with period 0.28 ps and decay time 2.2 ps, and structural analysis of the difference signal directly shows this as arising from ground-state dynamics along the PtPt coordinate. These results are compared with multiscale Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate how off-resonance excitation can be used to prepare a vibrationally cold excited-state population complemented by a structure-dependent depletion of the ground-state population which subsequently evolves in time, allowing direct tracking of ground-state structural dynamics.

Ultrafast dynamics induced by the interaction of molecules with electromagnetic fields: Several quantum, semiclassical, and classical approaches

Several strategies for simulating the ultrafast dynamics of molecules induced by interactions with electromagnetic fields are presented. After a brief overview of the theory of molecule-field interaction, we present several representative examples of quantum, semiclassical, and classical approaches to describe the ultrafast molecular dynamics, including the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method, Bohmian dynamics, local control theory, semiclassical thawed Gaussian approximation, phase averaging, dephasing representation, molecular mechanics with proton transfer, and multipolar force fields. In addition to the general overview, some focus is given to the description of nuclear quantum effects and to the direct dynamics, in which the ab initio energies and forces acting on the nuclei are evaluated on the fly. Several practical applications, performed within the framework of the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research "Molecular Ultrafast Science and Technology," are presented: These include Bohmian dynamics description of the collision of H with H2, local control theory applied to the photoinduced ultrafast intramolecular proton transfer, semiclassical evaluation of vibrationally resolved electronic absorption, emission, photoelectron, and time-resolved stimulated emission spectra, infrared spectroscopy of H-bonding systems, and multipolar force fields applications in the condensed phase.

Efficient on-the-fly ab initio semiclassical method for computing time-resolved nonadiabatic electronic spectra with surface hopping or Ehrenfest dynamics

We derive a somewhat crude, yet very efficient semiclassical approximation for computing nonadiabatic spectra. The resulting method, which is a generalization of the multiple-surface dephasing representation, includes quantum effects through interference of mixed quantum-classical trajectories and through quantum treatment of the collective electronic degree of freedom. The method requires very little computational effort beyond the fewest-switches surface hopping or Ehrenfest locally mean-field dynamics and is very easy to implement. The proposed approximation is tested by computing the absorption and time-resolved stimulated emission spectra of pyrazine using the four-dimensional three-surface model which allows for comparison with the numerically exact quantum spectra. As expected, the multiple-surface dephasing representation is not suitable for high-resolution linear spectra, yet it seems to capture all the important features of pump-probe spectra. Finally, the method is combined with on-the-fly ab initio evaluation of the electronic structure (i.e., energies, forces, electric-dipole, and nonadiabatic couplings) in order to compute fully dimensional nonadiabatic spectra of pyrazine without approximations inherent to analytical, including vibronic-coupling models. The Appendix provides derivations of perturbative expressions for linear and pump-probe spectra of arbitrary mixed states and for arbitrary laser pulse shapes.

Dynamics of ground state absorption spectra in donor-acceptor pairs with ultrafast charge recombination

A theoretical approach to simulation of the transient spectra in molecular systems with ultrafast photoinduced nonradiative electronic transitions is developed. The evolution of the excited and ground state populations as well as the nonradiative transitions between them are calculated in the framework of the stochastic multichannel point-transition model involving the reorganization of the medium and the intramolecular high frequency vibrational modes. Simulations of transient spectra of donor-acceptor pairs excited in the charge-transfer band that are accompanied by ultrafast charge recombination into the ground state demonstrate a possibility of positive band appearance in the transient absorption spectrum caused by those systems in the ground state, which returned there from the excited state. The region of the parameters of the donor-acceptor systems where a positive ground state absorption signal can be observed is discussed. A qualitative comparison of the simulated transient spectra with the experimental data on betaine-30 is presented.

Relation of exact Gaussian basis methods to the dephasing representation: theory and application to time-resolved electronic spectra

We recently showed that the dephasing representation (DR) provides an efficient tool for computing ultrafast electronic spectra and that further acceleration is possible with cellularization [M. Šulc and J. Vaníček, Mol. Phys. 110, 945 (2012)]. Here, we focus on increasing the accuracy of this approximation by first implementing an exact Gaussian basis method, which benefits from the accuracy of quantum dynamics and efficiency of classical dynamics. Starting from this exact method, the DR is derived together with ten other methods for computing time-resolved spectra with intermediate accuracy and efficiency. These methods include the Gaussian DR, an exact generalization of the DR, in which trajectories are replaced by communicating frozen Gaussian basis functions evolving classically with an average Hamiltonian. The newly obtained methods are tested numerically on time correlation functions and time-resolved stimulated emission spectra in the harmonic potential, pyrazine S0∕S1 model, and quartic oscillator. Numerical results confirm that both the Gaussian basis method and the Gaussian DR increase the accuracy of the DR. Surprisingly, in chaotic systems the Gaussian DR can outperform the presumably more accurate Gaussian basis method, in which the two bases are evolved separately.

Evaluation of the importance of spin-orbit couplings in the nonadiabatic quantum dynamics with quantum fidelity and with its efficient "on-the-fly" ab initio semiclassical approximation

We propose to measure the importance of spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) in the nonadiabatic molecular quantum dynamics rigorously with quantum fidelity. To make the criterion practical, quantum fidelity is estimated efficiently with the multiple-surface dephasing representation (MSDR). The MSDR is a semiclassical method that includes nuclear quantum effects through interference of mixed quantum-classical trajectories without the need for the Hessian of potential energy surfaces. Two variants of the MSDR are studied, in which the nuclei are propagated either with the fewest-switches surface hopping or with the locally mean field dynamics. The fidelity criterion and MSDR are first tested on one-dimensional model systems amenable to numerically exact quantum dynamics. Then, the MSDR is combined with "on-the-fly" computed electronic structure to measure the importance of SOCs and nonadiabatic couplings in the photoisomerization dynamics of CH(2)NH(2)(+) considering 20 electronic states and in the collision of F + H(2) considering six electronic states.

Measuring nonadiabaticity of molecular quantum dynamics with quantum fidelity and with its efficient semiclassical approximation

We propose to measure nonadiabaticity of molecular quantum dynamics rigorously with the quantum fidelity between the Born-Oppenheimer and fully nonadiabatic dynamics. It is shown that this measure of nonadiabaticity applies in situations where other criteria, such as the energy gap criterion or the extent of population transfer, fail. We further propose to estimate this quantum fidelity efficiently with a generalization of the dephasing representation to multiple surfaces. Two variants of the multiple-surface dephasing representation (MSDR) are introduced, in which the nuclei are propagated either with the fewest-switches surface hopping or with the locally mean field dynamics (LMFD). The LMFD can be interpreted as the Ehrenfest dynamics of an ensemble of nuclear trajectories, and has been used previously in the nonadiabatic semiclassical initial value representation. In addition to propagating an ensemble of classical trajectories, the MSDR requires evaluating nonadiabatic couplings and solving the Schrödinger (or more generally, the quantum Liouville-von Neumann) equation for a single discrete degree of freedom. The MSDR can be also used in the diabatic basis to measure the importance of the diabatic couplings. The method is tested on three model problems introduced by Tully and on a two-surface model of dissociation of NaI.

Efficient sampling avoids the exponential wall in classical simulations of fidelity

We analyze the efficiency of available algorithms for the simulation of classical fidelity and show that their computational costs increase exponentially with the number of degrees of freedom. Then we present an algorithm for which the number of trajectories needed for convergence is independent of the system's dimensionality and show that, within a continuous family of algorithms, this algorithm is the only one with this property. Simultaneously we propose a general analytical approach to estimate efficiency of trajectory-based methods and suggest how to use it to accelerate calculations of other classical correlation functions. Converged numerical results are provided for systems with phase space volume 2^{1700} times larger than the volume of the initial state.

Beating the efficiency of both quantum and classical simulations with a semiclassical method

While rigorous quantum dynamical simulations of many-body systems are extremely difficult (or impossible) due to exponential scaling with dimensionality, the corresponding classical simulations ignore quantum effects. Semiclassical methods are generally more efficient but less accurate than quantum methods and more accurate but less efficient than classical methods. We find a remarkable exception to this rule by showing that a semiclassical method can be both more accurate and faster than a classical simulation. Specifically, we prove that for the semiclassical dephasing representation the number of trajectories needed to simulate quantum fidelity is independent of dimensionality and also that this semiclassical method is even faster than the most efficient corresponding classical algorithm. Analytical results are confirmed with simulations of fidelity in up to 100 dimensions with 2(1700)-dimensional Hilbert space.

Normal and hyperspherical mode analysis of NO-doped Kr crystals upon Rydberg excitation of the impurity

Molecular dynamics simulations and both normal mode and hyperspherical mode analyses of NO-doped Kr solid are carried out in order to get insights into the structural relaxation of the medium upon electronic excitation of the NO molecule. A combined study is reported on the time evolution of the cage radius and on the density of vibrational states, according to the hyperspherical and normal mode analyses. For the hyperspherical modes, hyper-radial and grand angular contributions are considered. For the normal modes, radial and tangential contributions are examined. Results show that the first shell radius dynamics is driven by modes with frequencies at approximately 47 and approximately 15 cm-1. The first one is related to the ultrafast regime where a large part of the energy is transmitted to the lattice and the second one to relaxation and slow redistribution of the energy. The density of vibrational states gamma(omega) is characterized by a broad distribution of bands peaking around the frequencies of approximately 13, approximately 19, approximately 25, approximately 31, approximately 37, approximately 47, and approximately 103 cm-1 (very small band). The dominant modes in the relaxation process were at 14.89, 23.49, and 53.78 cm-1; they present the largest amplitudes and the greatest energy contributions. The mode at 14.89 cm-1 is present in both the fit of the first shell radius and in the hyper-radial kinetic energy spectrum and resulted the one with the largest amplitude, although could not be revealed by the total kinetic energy power spectrum.

Ab initio ground and excited state potential energy surfaces for NO-Kr complex and dynamics of Kr solids with NO impurity

The intermolecular potentials for the NO(X 2Pi)-Kr and NO(A 2Sigma+)-Kr systems have been calculated using highly accurate ab initio calculations. The spin-restricted coupled cluster method for the ground 1 2A' state [NO(X 2Pi)-Kr] and the multireference singles and doubles configuration interaction method for the excited 2 2A' state [NO(A 2Sigma+)-Kr], respectively, were used. The potential energy surfaces (PESs) show two linear wells and one that is almost in the perpendicular position. An analytical representation of the PESs has been constructed for the triatomic systems and used to carry out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the NO-doped krypton matrix response after excitation of NO. MD results are shown comparatively for three sets of potentials: (1) anisotropic ab initio potentials [NO molecule direction fixed during the dynamics and considered as a point (its center of mass)], (2) isotropic ab initio potentials (isotropic part in a Legendre polynomial expansion of the PESs), and (3) fitted Kr-NO potentials to the spectroscopic data. An important finding of this work is that the anisotropic and isotropic ab initio potentials calculated for the Kr-NO triatomic system are not suitable for describing the dynamics of structural relaxation upon Rydberg excitation of a NO impurity in the crystal. However, the isotropic ab initio potential in the ground state almost overlaps the published experimental potential, being almost independent of the angle asymmetry. This fact is also manifested in the radial distribution function around NO. However, in the case of the excited state the isotropic ab initio potential differs from the fitted potentials, which indicates that the Kr-NO interaction in the matrix is quite different because of the presence of the surrounding Kr atoms acting on the NO molecule. MD simulations for isotropic potentials reasonably reproduce the experimental observables for the femtosecond response and the bubble size but do not match spectroscopic results. A general overall view of the results suggests that, when the Kr-NO interaction takes place inside the matrix, potentials are rather symmetric and less repulsive than those for the triatomic system.

Ab initio nonadiabatic dynamics study of ultrafast radiationless decay over conical intersections illustrated on the Na3F cluster

We present a theoretical approach for the ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics based on the ab initio molecular dynamics carried out "on the fly" in the framework of the configuration interaction method combined with Tully's surface hopping algorithm for nonadiabatic transitions. This approach combined with our Wigner distribution approach allows us to perform accurate simulations of femtosecond pump-probe spectra in the systems where radiationless transitions among electronic states take place. In this paper we illustrate this by theoretical simulation of ultrafast processes and nonradiative relaxation in the Na(3)F cluster, involving three excited states and the ground electronic state. Furthermore, we show that our accurate simulation of the photoionization pump-probe spectrum is in full agreement with the experimental signal. Based on the nonadiabatic dynamics at high level of accuracy and taking into account all degrees of freedom, the nonradiative lifetime for the 1 (1)B(1) excited state of Na(3)F has been determined to be approximately 900 fs.

Ultrafast excited state dynamics of the Na3F cluster: Quantum wave packet and classical trajectory calculations compared to experimental results

Short-time, excited-state dynamics of the lowest isomer of the Na(3)F cluster is studied theoretically in order to interpret the features of recent time-resolved pump-probe ionization experiments [J. M. L'Hermite, V. Blanchet, A. Le Padellec, B. Lamory, and P. Labastie, Eur. Phys. J. D 28, 361 (2004)]. In the present paper, we propose an identification of the vibrational motion responsible for the oscillations in the ion signal, on the basis of quantum mechanical wave packet propagations and classical trajectory calculations. The good agreement between experiment and theory allows for a clear interpretation of the detected dynamics.

Optical linear response function with linear and diagonal quadratic electron-vibration coupling in mixed quantum-classical systems

Optical linear response function of linearly and quadratically coupled mixed quantum-classical condensed phase systems is derived. The linear response function is derived using Kapral's formalism of statistical mechanics in mixed quantum-classical systems. Our mixed quantum-classical linear dipole moment correlation function J(t) is compared with the full quantum J(t) [Y. J. Yan and S. Mukamel, J. Chem. Phys. 85, 5908 (1986)] in the high temperature limit. Model calculations and discussion of our results are presented. Various formulas of Franck-Condon factors for both linear and quadratic coupling are discussed.

Photodissociation of ICN at the liquid/vapor interface of water

The photodissociation of ICN adsorbed at the liquid/vapor interface of water is studied using classical molecular dynamics with nonadiabatic surface hopping. The cage escape, geminate recombination to form ICN and INC and the subsequent vibrational relaxation of these two molecules (on their ground electronic states) is compared with the same process in bulk water and with previous photodissociation studies at liquid interfaces. We find that the reduced surface density and weaker solvent-solute interactions give rise to reduced rate of nonadiabatic transitions and that the probability for cage escape at the interface is significantly enhanced due to the possibility that one or both of the photodissociation fragments desorb into the gas phase. The overall desorption probability varies from 75% to 92% for ICN initially located just below the Gibbs surface (50% bulk density) to ICN located just above the Gibbs surface, respectively. The corresponding geminate recombination probabilities are 18% and 9%, respectively. The vibrational relaxation rate of the recombined ICN is slower than in the bulk by a factor of 2.3.

Onset of decoherence: Six-wave mixing measurements of vibrational decoherence on the excited electronic state of I2 in solid argon

Pump-probe, four-wave, and six-wave mixing measurements of I2 isolated in solid argon are used to provide a clear experimental measure for the onset of vibrational quantum decoherence on the excited electronic state. The electronically resonant, six-wave mixing measurements bypass the rapid electronic dephasing, and measure the quantum cross-correlation between two packets launched on the B-state. The vibrational quantum coherence survives one period of motion, 400 fs, during which approximately 2000 cm(-1) of energy is transferred to the lattice. The decoherence occurs during the second cycle of motion, while classically coherent motion measured via pump-probe spectroscopy using the same electronic resonances continues for approximately 15 periods. This is contrasted with vibrational dephasing on the ground electronic surface, which lasts for 10(2) periods, as measured through time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The measurements and observables are discussed through time-circuit diagrams, and a mechanistic description of decoherence is derived through semiclassical analysis and simulations that reproduce the experiments.
