A study on the structure and vibrations of diphenylamine by resonance‐enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy andabinitiocalculations

Ionization Energies and Aqueous Redox Potentials of Organic Molecules: Comparison of DFT, Correlated ab Initio Theory and Pair Natural Orbital Approaches

The calculation of redox potentials involves large energetic terms arising from gas phase ionization energies, thermodynamic contributions, and solvation energies of the reduced and oxidized species. In this work we study the performance of a wide range of wave function and density functional theory methods for the prediction of ionization energies and aqueous one-electron oxidation potentials of a set of 19 organic molecules. Emphasis is placed on evaluating methods that employ the computationally efficient local pair natural orbital (LPNO) approach, as well as several implementations of coupled cluster theory and explicitly correlated F12 methods. The electronic energies are combined with implicit solvation models for the solvation energies. With the exception of MP2 and its variants, which suffer from enormous errors arising at least partially from the poor Hartree-Fock reference, ionization energies can be systematically predicted with average errors below 0.1 eV for most of the correlated wave function based methods studies here, provided basis set extrapolation is performed. LPNO methods are the most efficient way to achieve this type of accuracy. DFT methods show in general larger errors and suffer from inconsistent behavior. The only exception is the M06-2X functional which is found to be competitive with the best LPNO-based approaches for ionization energies. Importantly, the limiting factor for the calculation of accurate redox potentials is the solvation energy. The errors in the predicted solvation energies by all continuum solvation models tested in this work dominate the final computed reduction potential, resulting in average errors typically in excess of 0.3 V and hence obscuring the gains that arise from choosing a more accurate electronic structure method.

Efficient anharmonic vibrational spectroscopy for large molecules using local-mode coordinates

This article presents a general computational approach for efficient simulations of anharmonic vibrational spectra in chemical systems. An automated local-mode vibrational approach is presented, which borrows techniques from localized molecular orbitals in electronic structure theory. This approach generates spatially localized vibrational modes, in contrast to the delocalization exhibited by canonical normal modes. The method is rigorously tested across a series of chemical systems, ranging from small molecules to large water clusters and a protonated dipeptide. It is interfaced with exact, grid-based approaches, as well as vibrational self-consistent field methods. Most significantly, this new set of reference coordinates exhibits a well-behaved spatial decay of mode couplings, which allows for a systematic, a priori truncation of mode couplings and increased computational efficiency. Convergence can typically be reached by including modes within only about 4 Å. The local nature of this truncation suggests particular promise for the ab initio simulation of anharmonic vibrational motion in large systems, where connection to experimental spectra is currently most challenging.

Vibrational spectroscopy of gas-phase neutral and cationic phenanthrene in their electronic groundstates

Various experimental methods are applied to retrieve the vibrational structure of phenanthrene in its neutral and cationic groundstates. The linear infrared (IR) absorption spectra in the 400-1650 cm(-1) range of jet-cooled phenanthrene and its cation, both clustered with either an argon or a neon atom, are obtained via photo-induced cluster dissociation spectroscopy. The spectra observed are in good agreement with calculated spectra of the bare species. However, the observed spectrum of cationic phenanthrene shows more lines and lines with different intensities in the 900-1400 cm(-1) range than expected from calculations. Additional spectra of the perdeuterated phenanthrene Ar cation, and the warm (T approximately > room temperature) bare phenanthrene cation are recorded. Also the mass-analyzed threshold ionization spectra of bare phenanthrene and phenanthrene-Ar are recorded and compared with each other. Comparison of the spectral data recorded to calculated spectra of bare neutral, cationic and cationic perdeuterated phenanthrene, as well as to IR spectra recorded in matrix-isolation experiments, explicitly demonstrates that cluster dissociation spectroscopy is a valid and powerful method to obtain IR spectroscopic information of bare neutral and cationic jet-cooled poly-aromatic hydrocarbons.
