Vibrational relaxation of clusters: Relation to potential surface topography

Where macro meets micro

Reconciling or somehow linking the macroscopic and microscopic approaches to chemical and physical processes has been a challenge unaddressed for many years. One approach, presented here, treats the issue by examining individual phenomena well described by a macro approach that fails when applied to small systems. The key to the approach is determining the approximate system size below which the breakdown of the macro description is observable. The most developed example is the failure of the Gibbs phase rule for sufficiently small atomic clusters. Other examples, such as the onset, at sufficient size, of the insulator-to-metal transition, are discussed, as are some still more challenging phenomena.

Dynamics and Kinetics of Heat Transfer at the Interface of Model Diamond {111} Nanosurfaces

A molecular dynamics simulation was performed to study the effect of an applied force on heat transfer at the interface of model diamond [111] nanosurfaces. The force was applied to a small, hot nanosurface at 800, 1000, or 1200 K brought into contact with a larger, colder nanosurface at 300 K. The relaxation of the initial nonequilibrium interfacial force occurs on a subpicosecond time scale, much shorter than that required for heat transfer. Heat transfer occurs with exponential kinetics and a rate constant that increases linearly with the interfacial force according to 7 x 10(-4) ps(-1)/nN. This rate constant only increases by at most 10% as the temperature of the hot surface is increased from 800 to 1200 K. Replacing the interfacial H-atoms on both surfaces by D atoms also has a very small effect on the heat transfer. However, if one nanosurface has H atoms on its interface and the other nanosurface's interface has D atoms, then there is a marked 25% decrease in the rate constant for heat transfer. Increasing the size of the hot surface, and, thus, the interfacial contact area, increases the rate of heat transfer but not the rate constant. For the same interfacial force, different anharmonic models for the nanosurfaces' potential energy function give the same heat transfer rate constant. The possibility of quantum effects for heat transfer across the diamond interface is considered.

Kinetics of model energy landscapes: an approach to complex systems

An idealized potential energy surface (PES), simply a PES-like network of stationary points, is demonstrated to be a useful tool to study kinetic relaxation of complex energy landscapes. Combined with a master equation, we show that if constructed with proper regularity, the kinetics of the PES is easy to predict and understand by carefully examining the eigenmodes of the master equation. By modifying the idealized PES model to make it more and more complicated, we demonstrate a systematic method to study the complex kinetics on large PES. The idealized PES model is used to explore the feasibility and the robustness of statistical sampling of large PES. We develop several sampling strategies, such as the "rough topography sampling" and the "low barrier saddle sampling" in the idealized PES model and find they are also applicable to a realistic PES of the 13-atom Morse cluster with range parameter rho= 6. To measure the robustness of the sampling methods, we compare the eigenvalue spectra, the eigenvector similarity and the relaxation times of the total energy of the full and sample PESs.

Linking topography of its potential surface with the dynamics of folding of a protein model

The "3-color, 46-bead" model of a folding polypeptide is the vehicle for adapting to proteins a mode of analysis used heretofore for atomic clusters, to relate the topography of the potential surface to the dynamics that lead to formation of selected structures. The analysis is based on sequences of stationary points-successive minima, joined by saddles-that rise monotonically in energy from basin bottoms. Like structure-seeking clusters, the potential surface of the model studied here is staircase-like, rather than sawtooth-like, with highly collective motions required for passage from one minimum to the next. The surface has several deep basins whose minima correspond to very similar structures, but which are separated by high energy barriers.
