Quasibound states in long-range alkali dimers: Grid method calculations

Satellite bands of the RbCs molecule in the range of highly excited states

We report on the observation of three RbCs satellite bands in the blue and green ranges of the visible spectrum. Absorption measurements are performed using all-sapphire cell filled with a mixture of Rb and Cs. We compare high resolution absorption spectrum of Rb-Cs vapor mixture with pure Rb and Cs vapor spectra from the literature. After detailed analysis, the new satellite bands of RbCs molecule at 418.3 nm, 468.3, and 527.5 nm are identified. The origin of these bands is discussed by direct comparison with difference potentials derived from quantum chemistry calculations of RbCs potential energy curves. These bands originate from the lower Rydberg states of the RbCs molecule. This study thus provides further insight into photoassociation of lower Rydberg molecular states, approximately between Cs(7s) + Rb(5s) and Cs(6s) + Rb(6p) asymptotes, in ultracold gases.

Lifetime of vibrational levels from Fourier grid calculations: RbCs example

We present systematic calculations of the lifetimes of vibrational levels of excited Rb(5s)Cs(6p(1/2)) 0(+) electronic states. We show that a precise description of the variation with the internuclear distance of the transition dipole moment between electronic states is essential. It is also crucial to account precisely for the spin-orbit coupling between the Rb(5s)Cs(6p) A (1)Σ(+) and b (3)Π states. We describe the general trends of the probability of formation of stable molecules in the Rb(5s)Cs(6s) X (1)Σ(+) and a (3)Σ(+) electronic states, through radiative decay from the 0(+)v' levels, together with the branching ratios for the obtention of singlet or triplet molecules, stable with respect to dissociation. Furthermore, this analysis allows us to demonstrate the efficiency of the Mapped Fourier Grid Hamiltonian Representation method (MFGHR) to determine rigorously the energy variation, throughout the continuous part of the spectrum, of the density of an observable connecting bound vibrational levels and continuum states. The resolution in energy can be adapted to the studied problem through a judicious choice of the grid parameters.

Formation of ultracold Rb2 molecules in the v'' = 0 level of the a(3)Σ+(u) state via blue-detuned photoassociation to the 1(3)Π(g) state

We report on the observation of blue-detuned photoassociation in Rb(2), in which vibrational levels are energetically above the corresponding excited atomic asymptote. (85)Rb atoms in a MOT were photoassociated at short internuclear distance to levels of the 1(3)Π(g) state at a rate of approximately 5 × 10(4) molecules s(-1). We have observed most of the predicted vibrational levels for all four spin-orbit components; 0(+)(g), 0(-)(g), 1(g), and 2(g), including levels of the 0(+)(g) outer well. These molecules decay to the metastable a(3)Σ(+)(u) state, some preferentially to the v'' = 0 level, as we have observed for photoassociation to the v' = 8 level of the 1(g) component.

Spectral convergence of the quadrature discretization method in the solution of the Schrödinger and Fokker-Planck equations: Comparison with sinc methods

Spectral methods based on nonclassical polynomials and Fourier basis functions or sinc interpolation techniques are compared for several eigenvalue problems for the Fokker-Planck and Schrodinger equations. A very rapid spectral convergence of the eigenvalues versus the number of quadrature points is obtained with the quadrature discretization method (QDM) and the appropriate choice of the weight function. The QDM is a pseudospectral method and the rate of convergence is compared with the sinc method reported by Wei [J. Chem. Phys., 110, 8930 (1999)]. In general, sinc methods based on Fourier basis functions with a uniform grid provide a much slower convergence. The paper considers Fokker-Planck equations (and analogous Schrodinger equations) for the thermalization of electrons in atomic moderators and for a quartic potential employed to model chemical reactions. The solution of the Schrodinger equation for the vibrational states of I2 with a Morse potential is also considered.

Combining fixed- and moving-grid methods to study direct dissociation processes involving nonadiabatic transitions

We present a novel quantum-dynamics approach suitable for computing direct dissociation processes, including electronic transitions. This approach combines quantum trajectories in the Lagrangian reference frame with standard fixed-grid wave packets in order to overcome the limitations and difficulties of both techniques. As a model application, we consider the ultrafast photodissociation of H2 excited by a femtosecond extreme UV laser pulse.

Photoassociation of Ultracold Atoms: A New Spectroscopic Technique

The new spectroscopic technique of photoassociation of ultracold atoms is reviewed, with an emphasis on connecting this area to traditional bound-state molecular spectroscopy. In particular, in contrast to photoassociative spectra at thermal energies, which are broad and of low information content, photoassociative spectra of ultracold atoms are high resolution, permitting observation of small vibrational and rotational spacings of long-range molecular levels near dissociation (typically with outer classical turning points >20 Å). The types of detection and theoretical analysis employed are illustrated, primarily using the example of 39K2. Future directions and applications of this field (e.g., to ultracold molecular formation) are also discussed. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.
