Abstract
This experimental work focuses on the complex autoionization dynamics of Ar(2) clusters below the first ionization energy of the argon atom. Ar(2) is submitted to vacuum ultraviolet radiation, and the photoelectron spectra are collected in coincidence with the cluster ions. The ionization dynamics is revealed by the dependence on the photon energy. We applied a new experimental method which we developed to analyze the photoelectron signal. Thus, we were able (i) to get the complete vibrational progression of Ar(2)(+) that was never observed up to now, especially identifying the 0-0 transition overcoming the usual Franck-Condon limitations during single photoionization, and (ii) to obtain the projections of the vibrational wave functions of the autoionizing states over the Ar(2)(+) functions. This method provides a powerful tool to test the potential energy curves computed by high level theoretical calculations on Rydberg states.

Abstract
The photodissociation dynamics of the argon ionized trimer Ar(3)(+) is revisited in the light of recent experimental results of Lepère et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 134, 194301 (2009)], which show that the fragment with little kinetic energy is always a neutral one, thus the available energy is shared by a neutral and ionic fragments as in Ar(2)(+). We show that these results can be interpreted as the photodissociation of the linear isomer of the system. We perform a 3D quantum computation of the vibrational spectrum of the system and study the relative populations of the linear (trimer-core) and perpendicular (dimer-core) isomers. We then show that the charge initially located on the central atom in the ground electronic state of the linear isomer migrates toward the extreme ones in the photoexcitation process such that photodissociation of the linear isomer produces a neutral central atom at rest in agreement with measured product state distributions.

Abstract
A supersonic beam of metastable He(*) atoms and He(2) (*) a (3)Sigma(u) (+) molecules has been generated using a pulsed discharge at the exit of a pulsed valve prior to the gas expansion into vacuum. Pulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectra of the He(2) (+) X(+) (2)Sigma(u) (+) (v(+)=0-2)<--He(2) (*) a (3)Sigma(u) (+) (v(")=0-2) transitions and photoionization spectra of He(2) (*) in the vicinity of the lowest ionization thresholds have been recorded. The energy level structures of (4)He(2) (+) X(+) (2)Sigma(u) (+) (v(+)< or =2,N(+)< or =23) and (3)He(2) (+) X(+) (2)Sigma(u) (+) (v(+)=0,N(+)< or =11) have been determined, and an accurate set of molecular constants for all isotopomers of He(2) (+) has been derived in a global analysis of all spectroscopic data reported to date on the low vibrational levels of He(2) (+). The analysis of the photoionization spectrum by multichannel quantum defect theory has provided a set of parameters describing the threshold photoionization dynamics.

Abstract
High-resolution photoelectron spectroscopic data have been used to determine the potential energy curves of the first six electronic states of Ar2+. The potential energy functions properly include the effects of the long-range interactions and of the spin-orbit interaction and are of spectroscopic accuracy (1-2 cm(-1)) over a wide range of internuclear distances. The total number of adjustable parameters could be reduced to only 12 by truncating the long-range interaction series after the R(-6) term and assuming an R-independent spin-orbit coupling constant. This assumption was verified to be valid to an accuracy of +/-2 cm(-1) over the range of internuclear distances between 3.0 and 4.6 A. The interaction potential proposed by Siska [P. E. Siska, J. Chem. Phys. 85, 7497 (1986)] was generalized to a form that is expected to be sufficiently flexible to describe chemical bonding in other diatomic molecular ions. The potential energy curves are more accurate than the best available ab initio curves by two orders of magnitude and provide quantitative information on dissociation energies and equilibrium internuclear distances. The local maximum between the two potential wells of the I(1/2g) state was determined to lie 62 cm(-1) below the Ar(1S0)+Ar(+)(2P(3/2)) dissociation limit, and the II(1/2g) state is found to be significantly more bound (De=177 cm(-1)) than previously assumed.

Abstract
The pulsed-field ionization (PFI) zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectra of Ar(2) were measured between 117 000 cm(-1) (14.5 eV) and 128 300 cm(-1) (15.9 eV) using the penetrating field technique and synchrotron radiation at resolutions of up to 1 meV. The A(2)Sigma(+)(1/2u) ground state and B(2)Pi(1/2g) and C(2)Pi(3/2u) excited states were assigned to those spectra. The first adiabatic ionization potential of Ar(2) was determined to be 14.4572 +/- 0.0007 eV. A Le Roy-Bernstein plot and a Birge-Sponer plot were used to determine the dissociation limit of the A(2)Sigma(+)(1/2u) ground state. The vibrational level of the C(2)Pi(3/2u) excited state was observed for the first time. The effective lifetime for high-n Rydberg states converging on the vibrational levels of the C(2)Pi(1/2u) excited state is estimated to be shorter than those of the A(2)Sigma(+)(1/2u), B(2)Pi(1/2g), and C(2)Pi(3/2u) states, because the spectrum could not be observed on the PFI-ZEKE experiment. The threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectra of Ar(2) were also measured and compared with the spectra obtained from the PFI-ZEKE experiment. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.
