Translational/rotational coupling of the hindered CH3 quantum-rotor in lithium acetate dihydrate

Influence of deuteration on lithium acetate dihydrate studied by inelastic X-ray scattering, density functional theory, thermal expansion, elastic and thermodynamic measurements

The influence of deuteration on the properties of lithium acetate dihydrate has been investigated by thermal expansion measurements, ultrasound spectroscopy and calorimetry. Inelastic X-ray scattering has been employed to investigate if the low temperature structural phase transition can be detected by a change in the vibrational spectrum. Density functional theory, DFT, calculations have been employed to complement the experimental investigations. The thermal expansion coefficients and the specific heat of the deuterated compound differ significantly from the protonated form. The differences in the elastic stiffness coefficients are just above the detection limit of the technique employed here. Temperature dependent inelastic X-ray spectroscopic measurements show no significant change of the vibrational spectrum when crossing the transition temperature. The DFT calculations show that the methyl group dynamics are best described in the framework of coupled rotators of opposing methyl groups. One of the coupled rotational modes corresponds to a hindered rotator with a barrier of 15 meV, while the other is a free rotator.

Methyl rotational tunneling dynamics of p-xylene confined in a crystalline zeolite host

The methyl rotational tunneling spectrum of p-xylene confined in nanoporous zeolite crystals has been measured by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and analyzed to extract the rotational potential energy surfaces characteristic of the methyl groups in the host-guest complex. The number and relative intensities of the tunneling peaks observed by INS indicate the presence of methyl-methyl coupling interactions in addition to the methyl-zeolite interactions. The INS tunneling spectra from the crystals (space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with four crystallographically inequivalent methyl rotors) are quantitatively interpreted as a combination of transitions involving two coupled methyl rotors as well as a transition involving single-particle tunneling of a third inequivalent rotor, in a manner consistent with the observed tunneling energies and relative intensities. Together, the crystal structure and the absence of additional peaks in the INS spectra suggest that the tunneling of the fourth inequivalent rotor is strongly hindered and inaccessible to INS measurements. This is verified by proton NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation time which reveal the tunneling characteristics of the fourth inequivalent rotor.

Rotation–libration and rotor–rotor coupling in 4-methylpyridine

The low temperature rotational dynamics of methyl groups in 4-methylpyridine is analyzed in terms of a model potential including rotation-libration and rotor-rotor coupling. The parameters of the model potential are adjusted by comparison of calculated with published and newly recorded inelastic neutron scattering spectra. Initial evaluations of the potential parameters of the model are obtained from molecular mechanics calculations. Experimental spectra are calculated from these potentials by numerical solution of Schrödinger's equation for clusters of coupled rotors embedded in a bigger ensemble of rotors treated in the mean field approximation. Adjustment of the potential parameters leads to excellent agreement with the experimental spectra of protonated 4-methylpyridine, measured at well-defined spin temperatures. At higher levels of deuteration, agreement with experiment is qualitative, only. The observed deviations are attributed to the increasing frustration of the system of coupled methyl groups and mutual localization, effects leading to a phase transition around 5.5 K in isotopic mixtures, as shown in diffraction experiments.

Quantitative atom-atom potentials from rotational tunneling: their extraction and their use

Rotational tunneling of small molecular groups has been the subject of considerable theoretical and experimental activity for several decades. Much of this activity has been driven by the promise of exploiting the extreme sensitivity of quantum tunneling to interatomic potentials, but until recently, there was no straightforward means by which quantitative information about these potentials could be extracted. This review explains how a quantitative method, suitable for general application, was developed. It then goes on to show how this has been used to understand tunneling systems for which no previous satisfactory explanation had been found. The application of the methodology, and its results, to other disciplines is discussed.
