Abstract
In this contribution, we investigate the interaction between CO and O2 with metal atoms of group 11 deposited on a defect-free magnesium oxide surface using density functional theory with periodic point charge embedding. We present the first transversal study of the adsorption and coadsorption of CO and O2 on coinage metal adatoms deposited on metal oxide surfaces from the perspective of single-atom catalysis. Various analysis tools shed light on the binding situation of the metal atoms to the substrate as well as on the situation of the two molecules on the different metal centers. Our analysis demonstrates that cooperative electronic effects enhance the stability of CO upon coadsorption with O2 for all three metal centers. Our results also explain the lack of catalytic activity of group 11 metal atoms with respect to CO oxidation under thermal conditions as a competition between OC-O2 bond activation and surface diffusion, leading to metal atom agglomeration. Additionally, it is shown how coadsorption of CO and O2 on Au/Mg(001) could pave the way to single-atom photocatalysis.

Abstract
We present the theoretical DFT/B3LYP investigations on the cluster nucleation process and moving mechanism for the Pt n (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 12) clusters deposited on MgO surface with an embedded cluster model. The structures and energies of the Pt n clusters adsorbed on the perfect and oxygen vacancy MgO surfaces have been calculated. Based on the nucleation of the Pt n clusters on the oxygen vacancy sites of MgO surfaces, the two moving mechanisms of slide and rolling out of the vacancy region have been energetically investigated. The results show that the needed energies per atom moving out of the vacancy region decrease as the cluster sizes increase. Consequently, the big clusters move likely out of the vacancy sites by either slide or rolling model under a certain temperature condition.

Abstract
NO2 adsorbed on MgO(100) supported by Ag or Pt is explored by density functional theory calculations. NO2 is weakly adsorbed on MgO(100), with a bond involving minor oxide to adsorbate charge transfer. However, if MgO is supported, then the adsorption energy is considerably enhanced and NO2 is adsorbed as a nitrite (N). Analysis reveals that the NO2 excess charge originates from the oxide side of the oxide/metal interface and that the electron abstraction increases the oxide/metal adhesion. The proposed mechanism is general and should apply for oxidizing surface species.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations are used to compute the dipole polarizabilities of copper clusters. Structures for the clusters are taken from the literature for n = 2-32 and several isomers are used for each cluster size for n < or = 10. The calculated polarizabilities are in good agreement with the prediction of a simple jellium model, but much smaller than experimental observations for n = 9-32 [M. B. Knickelbein, J. Chem. Phys., 120, 10450 (2004)]. To investigate this difference, the calculated polarizabilities are tested for the effects of basis set, electron correlation, and equilibrium geometry for small-size clusters (n = 2-10). These effects are too small to account for the theory-experiment gap. Temperature effects are also studied. Thermal expansion of the clusters leads to very small changes in polarizability. On the other hand, the presence of permanent dipoles in the clusters could account for the experimental observations if the rotational temperature of the clusters were sufficiently low. The potential importance of the cluster dipole moments implies that reliable ground-state structures and experimental temperatures are needed to find quantitative agreement between calculated and observed polarizabilities.

Abstract
The adsorption of Au atoms at the surface of MgO and the formation of Au dimers have been studied by means of first principles DFT supercell calculations. Au atoms have been adsorbed on flat MgO terraces and monatomic steps but also at point defects such as oxygen vacancies (F centers) or divacancies. Very low barriers for diffusion of Au atoms on the MgO(100) terraces have been found. Atom diffusion is stopped only at strong binding sites such as the F and F+ centers (adsorption energy E(a) = 3-4 eV), divacancies (E(a) = 2.3 eV), or, to less extent, steps (E(a) = 1.3 eV). The combination of two Au adatoms with formation of a dimer is accompanied by an energy gain, the dimer binding energy, E(b), between 2 and 2.4 eV for all sites considered, with the exception of the paramagnetic F+ center where the gain is negligible (0.3 eV). The dimerization energy on the surface is not too different from the bond strength of Au2 in the gas phase (2.32 eV). Thus, defects sites on MgO do not have a special role in promoting or demoting Au dimerization, while they are essential to trap the diffusing Au atoms or clusters. Calculations on Au3 formed on an F center show that the cluster is fluxional.

Abstract
Point defects on oxide surfaces are presumed to be preferential nucleation sites for supported metal clusters. Under typical growth conditions, dimers constitute the first step in island nucleation. First-principles calculations on the formation of Pd dimers on regular and defect sites of the MgO(100) surface show that nucleation occurs with large dimer binding energies at divacancies and charged oxygen vacancies (F+ centers), while it is less favorable on steps and neutral F centers. The extensive database of defect trapping/attachment properties gives a firm basis to rationalize recent atomic-force microscopy findings and provides guidelines valid, in general, for ionic substrates.

Abstract
A new approach is suggested to the assignment of bond energies in molecules and clusters. It uses a shareholder principle for the redistribution of the shifts in atomic energies, which arise in a molecule, on the bonds. The scheme is directly suitable for semiempirical methods, where only one- and two-center terms occur. MSINDO calculations are performed to demonstrate the suitability of the approach for molecules and clusters. As an application the bonding in a deposit system is analyzed for the case of copper on magnesium oxide. It is found that copper atoms do not only bind to the preferred oxygen sites but also substantially to the magnesium sites. The copper-copper bonds are the strongest and will determine the structure of copper clusters on magnesium oxide surfaces.

Abstract
The calormetically measured heats of adsorption of Cu, Ag, and Pb on MgO(100), previously measured in our group, are correlated with bulk properties of the metals and their sticking probabilities and film morphologies. The low-coverage heats of adsorption (when the metals are mainly in two-dimensional (2D) islands) are used to estimate metal-MgO(100) bond energies within a pairwise bond additivity model. These values correlate well with the observed initial sticking probabilities and saturation island densities of the metals. This supports a transient mobile precursor model for adsorption. The values also correlate with their bulk sublimation energies, which suggests that covalent metal-Mg bonding dominates the interaction at low coverage, probably due to very strong bonding at defects. The heats of adsorption integrated up to multilayer coverages provide the metal-MgO(100) adhesion energies and metal-MgO(100) bond energies for metals in 3D films. These values correlate with the sum of magnitudes of the metal's bulk sublimation energy plus the heat of formation of the bulk oxide of the metal per mole of metal atoms. This suggests that local chemical bonds, both metal-oxygen and covalent metal-Mg, dominate the interfacial bonding for 3D films.
