The vibrational relaxation of I2 (X 1Σg+) in mesitylene

Vibrational energy relaxation of a diatomic molecule in a superfluid helium nanodroplet: influence of the nanodroplet size, interaction energy and energy gap

The influence of the nanodroplet size, molecule-helium interaction potential energy and ν = 1 - ν = 0 vibrational energy gap on the vibrational energy relaxation (VER) of a diatomic molecule (X₂) in a superfluid helium nanodroplet [HeND or (⁴He)_N; finite quantum solvent at T = 0.37 K] has been studied using a hybrid quantum approach recently proposed by us and taking as a reference the VER results on the I₂@(⁴He)₁₀₀ doped nanodroplet (Vilà et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2018, 20, 118, which corresponds to the first theoretical study on the VER of molecules embedded in a HeND). This has allowed us to obtain a deeper insight into the vibrational relaxation dynamics. The nanodroplet size has a very small effect on the VER, as this process mainly depends on the interaction between the molecule and the nanodroplet first solvation shell. Regarding the interaction potential energy and the energy gap, both factors play an important and comparable role in the VER time properties (global relaxation time, lifetime and transition time). As the former becomes stronger the relaxation time properties decrease in a significant way (their inverse follows a linear dependence with respect to the ν = 1 - ν = 0 coupling term) and they also decrease in a significant manner when the energy gap diminishes (linear dependence on the ν = 1 - ν = 0 energy difference). We expect that this study will motivate further work on the vibrational relaxation process in HeNDs.

Vibrational energy relaxation dynamics of diatomic molecules inside superfluid helium nanodroplets. The case of the I2 molecule

The vibrational relaxation (VER) of a X₂ molecule in a ⁴He superfluid nanodroplet (HeND; 0.37 K) was studied adapting a quantum approach recently proposed by us. In the first theoretical study on the VER of molecules inside HeND the I₂ molecule was examined [cascade mechanism (ν → ν − 1; ν − 1 → ν − 2; …) and time scale of ns].

Photoinduced electron transfer in donor-acceptor complexes of ethylene with molecular and atomic iodine

Building upon our recent studies of radical addition pathways following excitation of the I2 chromophore in the donor-acceptor complex of ethylene and I2 (C2H4···I2), in this article, we extend our studies to examine photoinduced electron transfer. Thus, irradiation into the intense charge-transfer band of the complex (λmax = 247 nm) gave rise to a band at 366 nm that is assigned to the bridged ethylene-I radical complex on the basis of our prior work. The formation of the radical complex is explained by a mechanism that involves rapid back electron transfer leading to I-I bond fission. Excitation into the charge-transfer band of the radical complex led to regeneration of the parent complex and the formation of the final photoproduct, anti- and gauche-1,2-diiodoethane, which confirms that the reaction proceeds ultimately by a radical addition mechanism. This finding is contrasted with our previous study of the C2H4···Br2 complex, where CT excitation led to only one product, anti-1,2-dibromoethane, a result explained by a single electron-transfer mechanism proceeding via a bridged bromonium ion intermediate. For the I2 complex, the breakup of the photolytically generated I2(-•) anion radical is apparently sufficiently slow to render it uncompetitive with back electron transfer. Finally, we report a detailed computational examination of the parent and radical complexes of both bromine and iodine, using high-level single- and multireference methods, which provide insight into the different behaviors of the charge-transfer states of the two radicals and the role of spin-orbit coupling.

Communications: Photoinitiated bond dissociation of bromoiodomethane in solution: Comparison of one-photon and two-photon excitations and the formation of iso-CH(2)Br-I and iso-CH(2)I-Br

Broadband UV-visible femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to monitor the excited state photochemistry of CH(2)BrI following one-photon excitation at 266 or 271 nm and two-photon excitation at 395 or 405 nm in 2-butanol. The results for one-photon excitation agree with earlier studies in acetonitrile, showing clear formation of iso-CH(2)Br-I following cleavage of the C-I bond. In contrast, two-photon excitation at 395 nm results in the appearance of a blueshifted photoproduct absorption band assigned to formation of iso-CH(2)I-Br following cleavage of the C-Br bond. The results are discussed in the context of prior experimental and theoretical work and the prospects for optical control of bond cleavage.
