Abstract
Infrared (IR) absorption and vibrational Raman spectra of a family of branched oligothiophenes have been determined experimentally as well as theoretically. The molecular spectra have been compared to those of the linear analogues, with identification made of spectral features due to structural properties that are valued in organic solar cell applications. The theoretical spectra have been obtained through a newly developed method in which individual conformer spectra, calculated at the time-dependent DFT level in this work, are weighted by statistics extracted from classical molecular dynamics trajectories. The agreement with experiment for the resulting averaged spectra is at least as good as, and often better than, what is observed for Boltzmann-weighted spectra. As the weights are available before the costly step of spectrum calculation, the method has the additional advantage of enabling efficient approximations. For simulating the molecular dynamics of the studied α,β-linked thiophenes and 2-methylthiophenes, high quality parameters have been derived for the CHARMM force field. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the IR and Raman spectra has been investigated, both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
How do molecules aggregate in solution, and how do these aggregates consolidate themselves in crystals? What is the relationship between the structure of a molecule and the structure of the crystal it forms? Why do some molecules adopt more than one crystal structure? Why do some crystal structures contain solvent? How does one design a crystal structure with a specified topology of molecules, or a specified coordination of molecules and/or ions, or with a specified property? What are the relationships between crystal structures and properties for molecular crystals? These are some of the questions that are being addressed today by the crystal engineering community, a group that draws from the larger communities of organic, inorganic, and physical chemists, crystallographers, and solid state scientists. This Perspective provides a brief historical introduction to crystal engineering itself and an assessment of the importance and utility of the supramolecular synthon, which is one of the most important concepts in the practical use and implementation of crystal design. It also provides a look to the future from the viewpoint of the author, and indicates some directions in which this field might be moving.

Abstract
We present a critical analysis of the Raman spectra of unsubstituted oligothiophenes and rediscuss the well-known Raman dispersion of conjugated systems explicitly considering intermolecular interactions. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra and DFT calculations for dimers of different chain lengths show that the effect of intermolecular interactions on the frequency and intensity of carbon-carbon (CC) stretching modes is non-negligible. This effect has not been considered in previous works and might explain many spectral features of this class of compounds which are not completely interpreted by the usual models. Both intensities and frequencies are significantly affected by intermolecular interactions showing that molecular self-organization should be taken into account in future spectroscopic studies of conjugated molecules. In particular, the interactions among molecules cause an upward shift of the frequency of the R mode (amplitude mode) which can explain the lack of frequency dispersion with conjugation length of oligothiophenes, as experimentally observed for solid-state samples at room temperature.
