Mixed silicon–carbon dianions and their stability in the gas phase

Ground and excited states of the diatomic dianion Cl2(2-)

The QCISD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ and CIS/aug-cc-pVQZ calculations have been carried out to obtain potential energy curves (PECs) of the Cl2(2-) diatomic dianion in order to address possibility of its formation in the merged beam fragmentation of Cl2(-) questioned based on the observation of the Cl(-)+Cl+e(-) channel. Results show that two of the excited states, namely A(1)Σg and a(3)Σg are metastable with PECs having wells deep enough to suite several bound states, with minima located at Re=2.8280 Å and Re=2.5972 Å, and Coulomb barriers of 1648.288 and 1403.835 cm(-1) heights located at 4.0320 and 3.6130 Å, respectively. Transition probabilities and tunneling predissociation lifetimes corresponding to these metastable states are also calculated and analyzed. Ground state X(1)Σg and excited states B(1)Σu, C(1)Πg and D(1)Πu calculated for this dianion are all repulsive. Calculated Franck-Condon factors suggest that Cl2(2-) can be produced in its excited states via an electron impact process initiating from the ground states of Cl2 and Cl2(-) .

Small gas-phase dianions of Zn3O42−, Zn4O52−, CuZn2O42−, Si2GeO62−, Ti2O52−and Ti3O72−

We have searched for new species of small oxygen-containing gas-phase dianions produced in a secondary ion mass spectrometer by Cs+ ion bombardment of solid samples with simultaneous exposure of their surfaces to O2 gas. The targets were a pure zinc metal foil, a copper-contaminated zinc-based coin, two silicon-germanium samples (Si(1-x)Ge(x)(with x= 6.5% or 27%)) and a piece of titanium metal. The novel dianions Zn3O(4)(2-), Zn4O(5)(2-), CuZn2O(4)(2-), Si2GeO(6)(2-), Ti2O(5)(2-) and Ti3O(7)(2-) have been observed at half-integer m/z values in the negative ion mass spectra. The heptamer dianions Zn3O(4)(2-) and Ti2O(5)(2-) have been unambiguously identified by their isotopic abundances. Their flight times through the mass spectrometer are approximately 20 micros and approximately 17 micros, respectively. The geometrical structures of the two heptamer dianions Ti2O(5)(2-), and Zn3O(4)(2-) are investigated using ab initio methods, and the identified isomers are compared to those of the novel Ge2O(5)(2-) and the known Si2O(5)(2-) and Be3O(4)(2-) dianions.

A Density Functional Study on Beryllium-Doped Carbon Dianion Clusters CnBe2- (n = 4−14)

Making use of the software of molecular graphics, we designed numerous models of C(n)()Be(2-) (n = 4-14). We carried out geometry optimization and calculation on vibration frequency by means of the B3LYP density functional method. After comparison of structure stability, we found that the ground-state isomers of C(n)()Be(2-) (n = 4-14) are linear with the beryllium atom located inside the C(n)() chain. When a side carbon chain is with an even number of carbon atoms, it is polyacetylene-like, whereas when a side chain is with an odd number of carbon atoms, it is cumulene-like. The C(n)Be(2-) (n = 4-14) clusters with an even number of carbon atoms are more stable than that with an odd number of carbon atoms, matching the peak pattern observed in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and Coulomb Explosion Imaging (CEI) investigations of C(n)()Be(2-) (n = 4-14). The trend of such odd/even alternation is explained based on concepts of bonding characteristics, electronic configuration, electron detachment, and incremental binding energy.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of fullerene dianions C762−, C782−, and C842−

We report laser photoelectron spectra of the doubly negatively charged fullerenes C(76) (2-), C(78) (2-), and C(84) (2-) at 2.33, 3.49, and 4.66 eV photon energy. From these spectra, second electron affinities and vertical detachment energies, as well as estimates for the repulsive Coulomb barriers are obtained. These results are discussed in the context of electrostatic models. They reveal that fullerenes are similar to conducting spheres, with electronic properties scaling with their size. The experimental spectra are compared with the accessible excited states of the respective singly charged product ions calculated in the framework of time dependent density functional theory.

Influence of delocalization on the stability of dianions: study of a systematic series of dianions with growing electronic localization

The electronic stability of a dianion is influenced by the degree of delocalization of its electrons, but it is generally not possible to separate this influence from other effects. Here, we investigate by theoretical means the sequence of dianions consisting of phen-1,4-ylenbis(ethynide) and seven of its derivatives obtained by hydrogenating the benzene core in several steps. These dianions are structurally similar and mainly differ by the degree of delocalization of their electrons. We present geometries and electron detachment energies computed at a correlated level of theory. The results point to a classification of the eight dianions in three distinct groups of electronic stability. We are able to explain this grouping by a simple resonance structure picture, which demonstrates why the dianions with more delocalized electrons are less stable.

Dianionic tetraborates do exist as stable entities

To date, B(6)H(6)(2-) and some of its derivatives are the smallest members of the closo-borates that have been synthesized and analyzed in condensed phases. In contrast, no stable dianionic tetraborate has yet been observed, either in solution or solids or in the gas phase. In this work, the gas-phase stability of dianionic tetraborates B(4)X(4)(2-) (X = H, CN, NC, or BO) is investigated with ab initio methods. For this objective, the geometries of the dianions are optimized, the electronic stability is tested, and various fragmentation channels are studied. In agreement with previous examinations, tetrahedral isomers of all examined tetraborates have been found to represent geometrically stable isomers and to exhibit a triplet electronic ground state. However, these isomers are electronically unstable, i.e., their additional electrons are not bound. Furthermore, new D(2)(d)()-symmetric isomers of B(4)X(4)(2-) (X = H, CN, NC, or BO) have been identified that have a closed-shell singlet ground state and are lower in energy than their tetrahedral counterparts. Moreover, B(4)(CN)(4)(2-) and B(4)(BO)(4)(2-) represent stable gas-phase dianions and are predicted to be observable in suitable experiments. The electronic properties and geometries of these dianions are discussed in detail and explained in terms of the electrostatic repulsion of the excess electrons and the aromaticity of the dianions.

Gas-phase stability of derivatives of the closo-hexaborate dianion B(6)H(6)(2-)

B(6)H(6)(2-) does not represent a stable gas-phase dianion, but emits spontaneously one of its excess electrons in the gas phase. In this work we address the question whether small stable gas-phase dianions can be constructed from the parent B(6)H(6)(2-) dianion by substitution of the hydrogens with appropriate ligands. Various hexa-, tetra-, and disubstituted derivatives B(6)L(6)(2-), B(6)H(2)L(4)(2-), and B(6)H(4)L(2)(2-) (L = F, Cl, CN, NC, or BO) are investigated with ab initio methods in detail. Four stable hexasubstituted B(6)L(6)(2-) (L = Cl, CN, NC, or BO) and three stable B(6)H(2)L(4)(2-) (L = CN, NC, or BO) gas-phase dianions could be identified and predicted to be observable in the gas phase. The trends in the electron-detachment energies depending on various ligands are discussed and understood in the underlying electrostatic pattern and the electronegativities of the involved elements.

Cyclic carbon cluster dianions and their aromaticity

Cyclic carbon cluster dianions (CC(2))(2-)(n)(n = 3-6) are investigated by ab initio methods with regard to their geometric properties, electronic stability, and aromaticity. The unique wheel-like structures of these dianions consist of a n-membered carbon ring, where a C(2) unit is attached to each carbon atom. All investigated dianions represent stable gas-phase dianions. While the smallest member of this family (CC(2))(2-)(3) is clearly aromatic, the aromatic character decreases rapidly with increasing ring size. The geometries and the aromaticity of the cyclic clusters (CC(2))(2-)(n)(n = 3-6) can be nicely explained using resonance structure arguments.

A fresh look at aromatic dianions

Isolated dianions of cyclooctatetraene and cyclobutadiene are, despite their aromatic character, unstable with respect to electron loss. Here we present the first ab initio study of the autodetachment lifetimes of several "aromatic" dianions. In particular, we investigate whether aromatic pi systems are associated with an enhanced stability with respect to electron loss and whether cross-conjugated (Y-aromatic) hydrocarbon dianions possess longer lifetimes than their linear-conjugated isomers. Moreover, our results are compared with bound state calculations for these metastable dianions, allowing us to analyze the validity of the latter approach. All considered, hydrocarbon dianions are found to possess surprisingly short autodetachment lifetimes on the order of a few femtoseconds, and therefore only electron scattering techniques seem to be capable of observing these species in the gas phase. The trends of the computed energies and lifetimes are best understood in terms of the mutual Coulomb repulsion of the extra charges. Small gas phase dianions can only be stable if the excess electrons can localize at least at two subgroups of high local electron affinity. Adding both extra electrons into one delocalized pi system leads to a very unstable species, and thus especially those structures associated with pronounced aromaticity are found to show high energies and short lifetimes.
